It has cost you, but you've revived a beautiful vintage car, its absolutely lovely, the colour is so classy, its a piece of class work, and its a signature car that can be in your collection forever. Its a labour of love. Make money on your other cars, keep this for love
“Absolute berk” is the best thing I’ve heard on RU-vid this month. I love all this stuff. Care a lot less about latest ridiculously fast . The classics are interesting.
This car represents the start of the new TGE TV and is my favourite of the collection. At the end of the day you will get exactly the car you wanted. Yes it has cost a bit, but it has also helped draw in the interest of viewers who are into their classics and modern classics. I look forward the 912 in the metal.
Man, have to be honest, this is my fave out of ur garage. Loving the journey this thing goes through and the transparant chat that comes with it. Cheers mate.
Yes I know about the steep cost of restoring a vehicle. I have 2, 60's vws that I restored, and I drained my checking account on each one. and that's doing the mechanicals my self. The body work I had to farm out and man did it cost $$$$. How ever they are both beauties. But I sure love driving them it's smiles per miles sort of thing , plus the new skills that I have learned . Your interior is beautiful. Plus that vehicle will only appreciate in value as time goes on. I always wanted a 912. So good for you .
If you have the stomach for it I would recommend the Wilhoit 2.2 engine conversion package. Not cheap but if your looking for fun and fast driving 171hp and 171ftlbs torque no problem. Purchase online his package and your mechanic can build. Worth it! Watch his videos with his shop manager Chris’s 912 conversion.
It's cost a lot and will cost more but it's my favourite of all your cars, past and present and I don't say that lightly. It's the perfect classic in looks, style and colour. Screams Steve McQueen and coolness. I'd love this to be a permanent member of the garage.

Great video. Thanks for sharing your 912 story! Our dad had a pretty pristine 1967 912... he was so proud of it... his pride and joy for sure. Sadly he passed away a little over a year ago, so sis and I eventually made the tough decision to pass it along (we sold it on BaT) to another car enthusiast who would love it as much as he did. But before we said goodbye, we made a video documenting his story... and that made us feel better... what a fun car and sorely missed!
Guessing these videos do poo views but this is the sort of car ownership story/journey I love to follow. The modern stuff is cool but this pulls on the heart strings. Would genuinely be sad if you ever sold this.

As the owner of an Irish green 912 on which I have spent a fortune, I can vouch for your figures, although your engine rebuild sounds very cheap. A full restoration costs £100k plus so it’s better to start with a wreck (if you can find one) rather than an ok car as the costs of sorting it out will be about the same. Having said that, when they are sorted they are really great cars and wonderful to drive.
25000£‘s a couple of years ago for full engine rebuild on a -91 Turbo. 50000£ for the whole nut’n bolt job. Prices have skyrocketed since. Paid 2000£’s just for cam covers on a 993 last year. Engine out + restoration, service, engine frame, cam cover and fuel lines plus general resto job on a 964 totaled 20000£’s this year at my indie expert.
I would just drive it and enjoy what you have already put in and done to it. Let the next owner restore it to the final restoration stage. Hope to see more videos of this gorgeous car!
Love the colour of the dials, that old luminous turquoise/ mint. Might wanna just run a Geiger counter over the dash just to make sure you don’t start glowing in the dark, lol! (Joking)
Hello, your 912 has come a long way and is looking great. You mentioned a flat spot (around 11:22), I am not surprised since your vacuum advance on the distributor is not connected, try hooking that up and making sure your ignition timing is up to spec, it will make it much more fun to drive.
'Loads of money thrown in, still looks the same' W123 Benz owner here and my lord, can I relate 🤣. I also intend to get the car resprayed in areas towards the end of the summer and taking care of rust spots. I've already spent 4 figures getting mechanical bits underneath sorted out (new fuel system just last week) and she's still not perfect! For anyone reading: the thing is with classic cars, you have to apply a totally different mindset to your average modern tech can. Unless you're a professional restorer and have loads of ££, you can never really call them 'finished' because there's always something that'll need doing next. The truth is while there's less to go wrong compared to a modern car, the bits that do go wrong are often always age-related. And for myself who daily drives my classic, I've come to the realisation that it may not be worth getting it to a perfect show-winner stage if it's going to be used most of the time! Out of all your videos Tom, the 912 stuff is my favourite - maybe because they're the ones that I can relate to the most... would love a classic Porsche someday and I agree with getting one that's already had work done to it. Best wishes, Aaron.
Just absolutely stunning! I absolutely absolutely adore this car! It’s one of my favourite cars you have bought. I’m glad you have kept it still looking vintage but new at the same time. They have done a incredible job! Also love the filming angles.
Feel your pain driving in London, So many bellends. Chin up though, lots of beautiful countryside to enjoy mostly bellend free. The west coast of Scotland is awesome.
In case you don't know, you are missing a vacuum pipe to the distributor. Bit of a strange one as I don't think that's the right distributor for a '66 either and it appears to be fitted in the wrong orientation too. Might be a good idea to get the timing checked out properly before you start making adjustments to the carbs. Hope this helps!
Tom has anyone ever told you that you look like the late great Oliver Reed ? I’ve been watching a of of his material on RU-vid recently. Oh and the 912 is looking mint incidentally 👌
All good’n fun with these old cars. I’ve done 1 nut and bolt and 2 restos myself of air cooled Porsches and after living with them over the years one just realize you never, ever can kick back and say “job done”. There’s ALWAYS the odd thing that can go wrong and when out driving them, you’re ALWAYS looking for new things and sounds that hasn’t been there before. Luckily in comparison to a 98-08 911, nothing will grenade overnight as can happen with 996’s and 997.1’s. Things always evolve slowly over time. I actually think I’d be better off taking the 964 instead of the 2020 Taycan if I were to drive around the globe. Not to mention having to look for a bloody power outlet every 200 miles.
Underneath it all is a very well (over) engineered car with bags of style and character. I'm disturbingly excited when I see a video come up with that little green car in the thumbnail. Aside from the obvious pleasure the car gives, you can also boast of your green credentials (what could be more environmentally friendly than keeping old cars going and not buying new EVs). Looking forward to more content with this car.
I'd say its money well spent, car will go up in price and people want older cars with amazing restorations but I'd do the same. I actual have to have a new oil pump fitted on my Bmw and we all know how expensive that is. German cars are money pits but worth it.
I bought 2 912 s in the late 90’s for $3,000 each. Different times. Don’t want a 4 speed no way. Sold them and was happy. Take huge money to restore. And u gots a fancy VW. So I bought a 63 VW. Loved it. Buy a Cayman.
It'll be well worth your botty to get savaged Tom, for a full bare metal job!! She's a lovely lovely classic Sir and she'll look absolutely epic when done! 👍
london is no different to anywhere boy post covid everyone who is in a rush is a c-word. world we live in. car is mega who needs 750ph in a 70mph speed limited country. all about the fun of driving. makes us petrol heads
