‘Don’t forget us’ - Survivors of New Lynn terror attack

On September 3 2021, Aahamed Samsudeen entered a supermarket in suburban Auckland, picked up a knife, and attacked a number of people, leaving five critically injured. As other shoppers rushed to the aid of those hurt, members of the Special Tactical Unit shot Samsudeen dead. In a matter of just minutes, this terrorism strike at New Lynn Countdown had left an indelible scar on the lives of many of those present. On Sunday, a group of survivors speak for the first time about the emotional and mental toll the random stabbing has had, and why they feel unsupported by a broken system.

Utterly unconscionable that there’s a classification system and a differentiation in what’s available for support between victims and witnesses of a terror event! This needs to be addressed asap.

Very sad to see that those 2 heroic men didn't get the help they deserved. 2 years, it's not good enough. We all pay ACC subs.... absolutely shameful. So much for the kindness matters Labour government.

I live in Sydney 4 years and been a very staunch Kiwi for governments reach including support networks for our citizens, but in the last year I see the rapid networks of Australia for things regarded here as major issues, like it's mental health support and I'm now seeing Aotearoa is very far behind for something as simple as mental health. Listening to these testimonies I feel NZ is so far behind. It's not looking after it's people and these are people that needed major support. Arohanui to these people and I'm very sorry

Wow! I remember this event taking place but I honestly didn’t realise/know how significant it was! It really did become sort of like a “forgotten” terror attack which I think is incredibly sad, now knowing the traumatic details of the attacks. Much arohas & prayers to this brave group of survivors 🙏🏼😌 I hope the government does come through with support for them!

My heart goes out to you each and every one of you heroic survivors of this violent crime. If any of you get to read this comment. The trauma of the atrocity you survived is compounded by the injustices you have faced in the aftermath. Our systems of governance give lip service to ideals of kindness and justice, while treating you with despicable inhumanity. Many people won't understand the ways in which the systemic response creates an obstacle to recovery, even in the face of your great resilience. Hipkins' sound-bite is meaningless and his show of concern is hollow. He and his are very good at leading people astray by seeding false hopes that are completely disengenous. National and Greens would be the same. Our legal system treats victims of violent crime in the most despicable of ways, (including labelling victims as 'witnesses' so as to control the narrative and exclude them from access to information). Your unmet needs, your faith in goodness, and your humanity persuade you to bring such gaps and violations to the attention of government, and the public. But after a similar pathway myself, it is my understanding now, that our systems of governance are merely maintaing a pretense of humanity, while their behaviour evidences their investment in the status quo. We can only rely on each other for humanity. Not the system and its machine. We don't need laws to discern the obvious difference between things that are right and things that are wrong. What happened to you was a wrong that warrants a right response. I have no doubt that some of the injustice you have faced have not been aired in this short segment because our legal system is very good at ensuring that certain things don't get spoken about. Especially where details of the circumstances of what happened are even more deceptively shrouded by its status as a 'terrorist attack' which allows the truth to be shielded under auspices of 'national sensitivity'. In my experience, it is easy to believe we live in a society where our governance systems enact our personal/community versions of 'justice', 'morality', 'humanity'. It is not until we become victims of criminal atrocity that we have to face the cognitive dissonace of finding out that our governance systems don't treat victims in the way that is warranted. It is not right or fair that people who have endured the threat to life that you have suffered in such obsene circumstances, should be needing to direct your energies towards pointing out the obvious to a govt. and an ACC system whose primary objective (despite claims of rehabilitation and compensation) is driven to avoid liability, like any insurance company. In the process it denies any of us the right to sue for damages. Our system is prepared and resourced to send their 'collateral damage' sprialling around all sorts of deviant convolutions so as to maintain the status quo that serves their malevolent interests. They gaslight the victims by turning the tables on where the true disorder really lies. We, the public, don't actually matter to them. And they can count on the fact that we face exulansis, because we are a small enough group whose experience is too raw and extreme for most people to comprehend. The Children of Lake Alice, the victims of the Chch mosque shootings know this too. We live in a world where we've been taught to expect (and behave as though) if we do something wrong we will make amends, and if we are wrong we can expect amends to be made to us. But that is not the society we live in. Which would be easier to accept, if it didn't pretend otherwise. Two years ago, I was rung up under the auspices of a victim notification register, to be told that the stranger who nearly killed me in four years earlier, (also a violent attack), was now sufficiently rehabilitated that he could return to work in our community without supervision. No thought was given to the impact of this statement on me who remains housebound by incapacity from the injuries he inflicted on me, that have left me unable to return to work, trying to survive on an ACC weekly compensation that is less than minimum wage because it was based on the year before I was attacked, where my earnings were decreased by a period of unpaid leave between my old job and my new one. I know some of what you have been through, which is far more than what this Sunday short segment can portray. And for that my heart goes out to you. Don't let the bastards get you down. I no longer look to them for justice or a 'right' response. Though I applaud your effort to bring them to account. They have proven their contempt and corruption to me beyond a shadow of a doubt. And that is even after a successful attempt to get a law change to improve the rights of victims of crime by insane offenders. I turn instead to people I can rely on and trust who are good. I'm glad you have each other, though so, so sorry for the circumstances that brought you together. And I'm glad that the Sunday programme gave you some voice to bring your plight into public conideration. Thank you, and my heartfelt wishes Sarah Preece

I hope and pray these survivors will get all the support they need. Im so grateful for their lives and quick thinking. My sister went to the same countdown earlier that day and I'm so grateful she was not there at the time of the attack. This terrorist attack raises other questions as our government shouldn't just provide an ambulance at the bottom of the hill solution. Our Labor government should also be asked why was the terrorist allowed in our country in the first place? they knew the terrorist was a high risk and dangerous. if they allowed this terrorist here does that mean there are other known terrorists still out in our community?

Blame the media for forgetting about this story, After like 2 days of this story they left it alone, they didn't take the time to mention how the victim's were, the last detail's they gave the public was what religion the guy was and where he was from. Its like the media didn't care about this story, and now they bring out this short doco knowing damn well they'll make money out of it, maybe if they fully covered this story, these guys would've had help earlier.

I am so sorry for the horrendous crime you bore witness to that left you without your father. Perhaps that happened in circumstances that had already taught you 'life isn't fair' and you didn't have any expectation that it would be? Good on you for 'hardening up' if that is what has helped you to move on from what happened. Perhaps you offer it as well-meaning advice? But, I'm also genuinely sorry that your heart is hardened such that you chose to make such a comment to these people, where you couldn't access your compassion and greater insight. I agree that life isn't fair and that we must move on from things that set us back. I have no doubt that these people only ever wanted to move on. I also think that when good people are confonted with a much unwlecome view of injustice and immorality, their goodnes and humanity propels them to resist improper treatment. Not just for their sakes. If we didn't have people pushing back against things they see to be wrong in this world, we woudn't enjoy many of the rights most people get to take for granted, that do enable them to 'move on'. Life isn't fair. But that's no excuse to treat people unfairly if we are guided by a concern to take care of each other.
