An art student from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing did an experiment for her graduation project - to attempt to live 21 days for free in Beijing. She disguised herself as a socialite and slept in the halls of extravagant hotels, tried on jade bracelets at auctions, and enjoyed free food and drinks. Her 21-day project caused a sensation online, triggering heated discussion about class, privilege, and wealth inequality.

i think the one thing that really helped her confidence was knowing that this was just a social experiment. she's not really in a situation where she needs to act like this to survive or get away with certain things. if things actually went really south, she'd at least have something to fall back on.

I once wandered through an airport during transit and by mistake went into the VIP Lounge (there happened to be no one at the front at that time). Eventually I noticed there was "free" food and thought wait this can't be right, and realized where I was. I kinda panicked a little, but then I thought no, if I don't want to get caught I have to play it cool. So I pretended to belong, ate some stuff and when it was time for my flight I walked out. Or was quite fun and exciting

One of Marilyn Monroe's lovers talked about something similar. They were walking down the street and no one knew it was her. She said something like "would you like to see her" then suddenly everyone started noticing and approaching her. Confidence isn't just a "fake it" thing. It's not about "believing" either. True what you say. Confident appearance and a sense of authority can make a huge difference in how people treat you. Still. You all make one basic mistake: You all confuse self-confidence and authority, with respect. But just because someone isn't confident in themselves, doesn't mean you have the right to treat them bad either. Showing self-confidence and authority is one thing. Showing respekt, the other.

She makes a very potent point that is prevalent everywhere in the world in our capitalist society: Being rich is cheap, and being poor is expensive. The rich get access to freebies and low interest rates while the poor must pay for everything and have to settle for low quality items that will actually cost more in the long run.
@crown9413
@crown9413 Год назад
It’s intrinsic to human nature rather than any particular system. Society always supports it’s elite. If you were a noble in the medieval period your word in a court of law would be heard while a peasant’s would be ignored. And would never have to work a day in your life. If you’re politically connected in the soviet union you’d get the nicest apartments and holiday vouchers and first dibs on the shortage goods.
@ajmaynard92
@ajmaynard92 Год назад
Things are made cheap for the rich because how people make money of the rich is different. For example low interest rates, on the surface it seems illogical that a bank which you would think is trying to maximize its income would give the wealthiest person the lowest rates. The reason is actually simple, the bank gets a lot more money in the long run by charging 1% fees on large investing accounts over 7% fees on something expensive. As an example let's take a fancy car worth 250000 dollars. A rich person with high credit scores will probably get a 3% interest rate but banks don't just look at the wealthy persons money, they look at where there money is. A 7% interest over 6 years on a 250000 dollar car will yield the bank something like 60000 or 70000 dollars where a 3% is more like 25000 to 30000 ish (rough numbers). The thing is allowing the rich person to invest that extra 35000 into an investing account charging 1% over 20 to 30 years with a 7% return on investment will yield far more then the 30000 the lost on the car, something like 115000. The more the person knows investing as well as considering their personal income those types of decisions rapidly stack to being millions of dollars. Take my 401k as an example. I get charged like 1% per year in fees and get a return of about 9% per year over a 10 year average. I do this while continuing to add to that account at 1050 dollars a month (starting at 24 years old) and roughly this translates to about 2.1 million dollars in fees, after fees I would have about 3.2 million dollars. Essentially how one handles money fundamentally changes how everything in that person's life is perceived from the banks perspective. More money to the rich person means more money for them depending on wealth maintenance habits. The next question is how does a bank know it will have access to that person's money if they let them keep it? Individually they don't so they still charge interest. The interest is decided more along the lines of a statistical likelihood of wealthy individuals having a part in their investing accounts over a "competitors" accounts. I have "competitors" in quotes because roughly speaking all the banks realized that dealing with the problem as an aggregate statistic maximized everyone's outcomes. They didn't necessarily require active coordination to come to that realization. The method of treating the situation from a probability standpoint only works because everyone agrees to it and they agree to it because it is actually empirically the best method of approaching the problem. All other methods have a high reward but absurdly high risk making other methods not necessarily worth the trouble. Just match the interest rate to a statistic of most efficient charge rate relative to likelihood of investment participation in their particular financial products directly or indirectly. To put this another way, the more you narrow the ways in which you interact with a bank the more they charge on the specific ways you interact with it. If you maximize the options of interaction the bank has and prove successful at this the less any individual avenue is charged because the money is gained from dealing with the aggregate of options, not in an individual interaction. (This is not me agreeing or disagreeing with the system it's just pointing out how it works). As a related topic this actually implies money is valued differently depending on the perception of the person who has the dollar and banks have ways of figuring out perceptions of individuals indirectly. The moral implications of this are fairly extreme and interesting because it would change how most people understand finance as a whole. A dollar is not simply a dollar to a bank, a dollar is whatever opportunities an individuals situation/perceptions allow it to be and banks calculate this. This being the source of inequality rather then just a number means the policies of inequality are highly related to regulating individual perception or removing individual maintenance over wealth as a method of maximizing it. That changes what social programs actually are to a politician. It usually means they don't trust their own population/constituents. That should make people highly cautious of the actual intentions of most if not every politician on its own and what it says about how they view the character of the people they "represent".
