I am glad this conversation is happening. Even more glad that young Africans are returning to the spirituality of their ancestors. The key tenets of majority of African spirituality is BALANCE and reverence for universal laws of nature. Western religion is anathema to that and hence the reason why on average Africans are spiritually, culturally and economically poorer. There is no other race of people who willfully abandoned the wisdom of their ancestors and prospered.

Most of our people are confused with religion and spirituality! The English term religion derived from the Latin religare meaning ‘to bind’. This presupposes that anything that binds you is a religion! So in brief wherever you are bound to perform ritual is a religion. In Christianity they have a ritual such as communion or last super where they eat unleavened bread and drink wine signifying the body and blood of Jesus Christ respectively. In Islam they do sacrifices where they slaughter ram and also go to kiss the rock, Kaba in Mecca. In Judaism they also do a lot of sacrifices in their various festivals. One of them is to slaughter a ram, using a fowl to go around their heads etc. All the other groups such as Hinduism, Krishna, Shintoism, Buddhism etc, perform rituals so it makes what they practise become a religion according to definition. So the question is, is the pure Afrikan way of life a religion? The answer is absolutely YES! It is yes because many rituals are performed! Someone may say that they don't have temples where they go and meet together and sing and pour libation and because of that it is not a religion. In ancient times our ancestors used to go to temples to praise the Supreme Being through the Abosom. That is why in Egypt, Nubia. Axum and the Levant we see ancient temples in ruins. These temples we say in Akan, Twi as Abosom fie. Example is In Nigeria where the Yorubas have the Ifa temples. The word spirituality comes from the Latin “spiritus” which literally means “breath”, signifying Life. Anything holy that we do that naturally enhances our lives in a positive way can also be part of our spirituality. Drinking and bathing special herbs, to fortify ourselves to attain longevity or to let us become holy and be closed to the Supreme Being and let us leave long is part of our spirituality. Let us be mindful that religion binds us to do certain rituals but spirituality does not according to the root definition of these words. But in all Afrikan purest way of life as practised devoid of unholy conducts is the highest form of spirituality! Wherever you are practise love, kindness and holiness!
