‘New Avenues For Old’. The radical restoration of the 300 year old avenues at Burghley

Bunny chats to Pete Glassey, who has been head forester at Burghley Park for the last 30 years. Pete talks about the difficult decisions he has to make concerning the ancient lime avenues which were planted around 1690, one of which is over a mile long. The avenues were becoming unstable partly due to attack from the bracket fungus, Ganoderma austral, and also due to the relatively close planting at centres of 6m. Pete describes how he goes about the felling, propagating (to ensure the exact same clone) and replanting of these amazing architectural features.

Thank you for this I am fascinated by Burghley with its associations with William Cecil and Tradescant the Elder and the Younger. Would live to see more of the gardens and the house

That was fascinating. I just planted a new claret ash in my garden to replace an old beauty who died, but watching this humbles me.

I would have needed my heavy coat, gloves, and a scarf. It's beautiful, but it looks cold and windy during the filming and interview. Fascinating work. What a beautiful space.

That was strange, in a good way. This chap obviously knows what he is talking about - in a scientific, technical and practical way. Much of the media is full of people you sense are making most of it up as they go along. Not this Yellowbelly. Your best video this year ! Thank you.

Nb. A Yellowbelly is somebody from Lincolnshire. Other definitions are NA.

Not a garden I can plant at home, but glorious to observe.

This was so very interesting! From what I've read/heard Capability Brown had no qualms about ripping things out (or moving villages, for that matter) in order to bring his visions to life. I wonder what he would have thought of a laser sight tool, or diesel excavating machine. The massive landscape projects completed in the prior centuries are astounding! I love leaning about them. Three hundred year-old trees!!! You can really see the difference with the tall version, which I prefer. I propagate rosemary plants using a similar method. Pete is so knowledgeable, and his words ring with experience. Thank you for bringing us this fascinating look at the history (and future) of this beautiful park. Happy Christmas to you as well, Bunny!

Excellent programme. The kind of intelligent broadcast which should be a main feature on Gardeners' World, but we know won't for the obvious reasons that the presenter and her interlocutor treat their audience as intelligent, with no patronising attempts to popularise or make complex points simplistic. The only slight impediment to almost total pleasure was the slightly muffled sound - but that is an extremely minor quibble!
