Claudine Gay won the Toppan Prize for Harvard's best political science dissertation, 1998, which she lists in her CV. If she lifted passages from half a dozen scholars as well as Dr. Swain without adequate attribution, that is indeed reprehensible, and not a matter of a few missing quotation marks as Harvard maintains.

Carol Miller Swain was born on March 7, 1954, in Bedford, Virginia, the second of twelve children. Her father dropped out of school in the third grade and her mother dropped out in high school. Her stepfather used to physically abuse her mother, Dorothy Henderson, who is disabled due to polio. Swain grew up in poverty, living in a shack without running water, and sharing two beds with her eleven siblings. She did not have shoes and thus missed school whenever it snowed. She did not finish high school, dropping out in ninth grade. She moved to Roanoke with her family in the 1960s and appealed to a judge to be transferred to a foster home, which was denied. Swain instead lived with her grandmother in a trailer park. After she divorced in 1975, Swain earned a GED and worked as a cashier at McDonald's, a door-to-door salesperson, and an assistant in a retirement facility. She later earned an associate degree from Virginia Western Community College.[3][4] She went on to earn a B.A., magna cum laude, in criminal justice from Roanoke College and a master's degree in political science from Virginia Tech. While an undergraduate at Roanoke College, she organized a scholarship fund for black students that by 2002 had an endowment of $350,000. She finished a Ph.D. in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1989. In 2000, she earned a Master of Legal Studies from Yale Law School. "Wikipedia Quote".

She should not just resign, her PHD should be null and void. Anyone can go on Google, pull up someone else's research and call it their own. Sources are one thing, scanning that source and calling it your own is quite another.
But is Harvard listening to her? This is indefensible conduct from Gay, who needs to be fired. Every news outlet should be interviewing Professor Swain.
I would just like to say this to that woman. That's talking to bring your own kind down. Stop doing it. Quit talking about that woman. That woman aint never said nothing about you. So why are you talking about her? So? What shall I have some going on in the past?
Read about Swain's background -- talk about succeeding despite extreme adversity. Perhaps she should be considered to be president of Harvard. I mean, if Gay got there on Swain's work, that seems fair to me.

I feel bad for the writer bc she is fighting both against the president of Harvard and the idea of affirmative action bc she earned her place as an academic while Gay fell into her place based on race and little merit. It really does hurt all of us.
Agreed. When Harvard was searching for a new president they sent along a message to ask faculty and staff. They highlighted that they wanted the next president to put DEI in the forefront. It was pretty much inferred that they were going to hire based on ethnicity. It was quite disheartening.
Unfortunately, many blacks have gotten ahead thanks to affirmative action, even Swain. It was the absolute worst thing Kennedy did as president. And LBJ didn't help the matter with the civil rights act.
Dr. Swain needs to testify before Congress IMMEDIATELY to assert the veracity of her own hard work and show what a blatant fraud Queen Claudine is line by lifted line!!

Everyone should be held to the same standards, otherwise the Havard name is worth nothing. If anyone has been expelled for less than what Gay is being accused of then that's open to a potential law suit.. they just hope there's not many of them around.......
I admire Dr. Swain. That being said, I see more and more people getting ahead in academic fields by less than sterling means! When unethical people get placed into positions of authority, we all suffer! Also, I begin to trust the system less and less.
Yes I agree. He was most rude..interrupting her in mid-sentence. He is quite young and has a lot to learn in how to interview intelligently. I just wanted him to shut up!
Harvard has little choice but to back her, having supported her all along, it could not afford to turn around and admit that any degree it has handed out, is not worth the paper it's written on. This needs independent scrutiny, and in the face of this, Harvard would have no place to hide.
One of my friends plagiarized a sentence, yes 1 sentence, and the university was extremely harsh to her. As I remember, the punishment was 10 hours of community service, grade 'F' for the class, 6 months evaluation. Because of all of this, she later dropped from the university and I didn't see her again. Think again on which race has that "privilege".
If Harvard refuses to accept that it was plagiarism, and state that "it meets their standards", then their standards will lose respect along with the value of any degree from Harvard. If they want to kill the value of their school..... Then by all means, go ahead.

Harvard sent out this: "On December 9, the Fellows reviewed the results, which revealed a few instances of inadequate citation. While the analysis found no violation of Harvard’s standards for research misconduct, President Gay is proactively requesting four corrections in two articles to insert citations and quotation marks that were omitted from the original publications." There is no such thing as "inadequate citation." You cite or you don't. Erroneous is possible, wrong page, wrong form. If a citation is inadequate, then it is not a citation and you have plagiarized. There is nothing "proactive" about her corrections: she got caught and is hiding it in plain sight. Adding citations and quotation marks is an admission of plagiarism.
You don't have to nit-pick as some might consider minor situations of plagiarism, as in academic work, as opposed to commercial ventures. INSTEAD look at the issue at hand. How has Harvard treated matters of student speech in the past. There is a perfect example of their two faced callous double standard. In 2019, Harvard 'expelled' an accepted student by rescinding an offer of admission, before he ever set foot on campus. Perfectly qualified, and accepted, then they discovered he had used the 'n' word on a FB group page post, when he was 16 years old, two years prior to being accepted to Havard. lol. Gone . . . bye bye. Compare that to a student on campus calling for the mu r d e r of Jews, in an environment just short of Kristolnacht levels, with Ms. Gay not able to bring herself to say that it would even be a violation of conduct, let alone a cause for being expelled. You'll have to find the report of it online, YT won't let me insert the link.

A well-spoken and lovely lady. Kudos to you Ms. Swain on your humanity and your achievements. I also like the fact that you didn't take the interviewer's leading questions to go for the low-blow against Ms. Gay, but instead gave more general and far-reaching answers to the questions.
It is absolutely ridiculous that Gay has not been fired. She is an insult to all minorities who work hard to get where they are AND remain fair minded and honest.
Did anyone else notice that in the second example of plagiarism, she changed the word decrease to increase thereby changing the conclusion of the study?
I did notice that and it's a terrible example of plagiarism. At university I was more of a synonym swapper than a complete reformulationist (which is technically plagiarism although I honestly didn't realise that at the time, perhaps because British mid level universities more encouraged splicing quotes into your own sentences, which is actually a much easier way to find plagiarism than allowing freeform paraphrasing) but I would never have submitted something as blatant as that where she not only lost the meaning of the original but also only changed about ten percent of the words and almost none of the structure. I now teach at a Chinese university and she is the dean of Harvard!

Let's allow Harvard to soil its reputation even more. Once donors withdraw their funds and the enrollment plummets, we'll see if the University still wants to have her around.

Swain is an Auntie Ruckus. In 2002, Swain argued against reparations for American descendants of slaves during an event at Delaware State University, a historically black university.[50] In 2005, she called for President George W. Bush to issue a formal apology to African Americans for the institution of slavery.[51] She also wrote a policy document on the subject for the Heartland Institute.[52] When an apology was eventually issued in 2009, during the presidency of Barack Obama, she called it "meaningless"[53] and expressed disappointment that it did not happen under the previous president, a Republican, as "it would have shed that racist scab on the party."[53] In October 2009, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) mentioned Swain in a critique of A Conversation About Race, a documentary directed by Craig Bodeker that contends that racism is not an issue in America. The SPLC stated that the film had been well-received among white supremacist organizations, and that the film's director gave interviews to white supremacist publications to promote it. The SPLC noted that Swain was one of the few mainstream figures who had endorsed the film.[54] Swain stated that the content of the film could be effectively used in social science classes to encourage debate,[55] called the SPLC article a smear, and claimed that the SPLC was retaliating against her for past criticism of the organization.[56] Swain called the re-election of President Barack Obama in 2012 "a very scary situation".[2] She argued that civil rights leaders like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton had used the killing of Trayvon Martin to increase voter registration for the Democratic Party,[57] and argued that black-on-white crimes are underreported in the media.[58] She also criticized Martin's mother for failing to address the issues of black-on-black crime rates, unemployment, and abortion in black communities.[59] In July 2016, Swain criticized Black Lives Matter, suggesting it was "a Marxist organization" and "a very destructive force in America."[60][61] She reiterated that it was "pure Marxism" and concluded that it "needs to go".[60][61] In October 2020, a video recording was released which showed her comparing Black Lives Matter to the Ku Klux Klan.[62]
I went to a good university, but not one as famous or noteworthy as Harvard. They held incredibly high standards for all papers and research. Looking back a huge part of my editing of my dissertation was going through my work with a fine tooth comb to ensure my work was properly referenced and credit given to ideas and passages that were not my own. I knew there would be no excuse for not referencing my paper correctly. President Gay's clear plagiarism is either the result of dishonesty, or sloppiness... either way she was a well educated educated woman by that point who handed in a paper absolutely knowing that she hadn't followed approved standards and rules.
I feel that the example of the sentence used here was not plagiarism. What other words would you use to express this thought? On the other hand her defense of genocide was a fireable offense. If you were to use another word ilo of jews Harvard would come down full force. Scorched earth....but for attacking jews....not so much. Edit: There needs to be a citation as to where the data came from ie to the original author.
Basically it is plagiarism because she didn't reword, restructure, cite and reference as you are supposed to. Is it the worst example of plagiarism? No, and probably many students do the same and get away with it. Should the president of Harvard get away with submitting such work and becoming president of Harvard partly on the back of that work? I would argue no. I actually think some of the plagiarism standards are excessive and that what's most important is that you cite and reference correctly at undergrad level. Correct plagiarism is supposed to show that you have actually mastered the knowledge and reproduce it in your own words, but how many undergraduate students do that? Perhaps these highest plagiarism rules should be reserved for PhDs and higher, but that is if course what Ms Gay is.

@@formulaic78 I taught English and history courses, first on the secondary level and then on the university level. I was also a dissertation advisor for 22 years. No excuses---plagiarism is plagiarism. Undergraduate students should know the rules about plagiarism---and most students are honest about citing material that isn't theirs. On the graduate level there is simply no excuse for plagiarism, period. "Standards are not excessive," and there are numerous websites, composition texts, and formal textbooks devoted solely to various documentation styles to guide any academic or professional writer as to correctness of notations, Works Cited, Bibliography, etc. Your post suggests the slippery slope---students on the undergraduate level possibly can get away with plagiarism because they don't know the rules or don't care to follow them. However, if those students move on to graduate level work, then what happens? Does a lightbulb go on and flash, "Now you must document your sources correctly because you're in grad school," or will students continue to engage in that little bit of plagiarism because they can get away with it and it just slips under the cracks? The rules about academic honesty exist for a reason: so that people don't "borrow/steal" someone else's words, ideas, or work. I've seen academic standards erode year after year, with the curriculum dumbed down to meet the lowest common denominator of students now going to college. We see people across all walks of life cheating, stealing, declaring ideas to be their own when those ideas belong to someone else. Ethical standards, integrity, and academic honesty are not too much to ask in an environment where students are asked to submit THEIR work and not the work or ideas of someone else. Maybe honesty and integrity have gone out the proverbial window today, along with so many other things in life. If plagiarism is allowed and even condoned, then why bother to have students attend college or a university at all? Why bother to invest in the time, energy and effort it takes to complete and successfully pass a course when students can just take someone else's work, call it their own, and sail happily into the sunset with a degree that negates academic honesty and genuine learning--by simply borrowing someone else's ideas and claiming those words/ideas as their own?

My whole life I thought America was working toward equality. Then about 5 years ago, "progressives" slipped in the word "equity" to replace equality. Now, racism is just fine so long as the correct groups are being discriminated against. Ppl don't even try to hide it.
