The real-life character who inspired the Tom Hanks movie 'The Terminal' passed away while living inside one of the world’s busiest airports. ABC News’ Derricke Dennis reports.
Imporant to note, they gave him half a million dollars for his story about "The Terminal" It was held for him at the Airport bank in his name, but he didn't take it and has remained there till today. He apparently didn't want money, he believed in being self-sufficient. That is probably why in the movie Victor did everything to feed himself without breaking the law, even to the point of surviving on crackers. I think he didn't sign the refugee papers because. I think because he got use to the routine at the airport and he had no family besides the people at the airport and was treated well by strangers, he didn't want to leave it. People who found his existence must've thought it was terrible, but he must've enjoyed it, The fame he got as well. Apparently in 2008 he was at a paris shelter and fell sick and hated the shelter, he went back to the airport after and became better. I think the airport gave him some sort of peace of mind.
Apparently he actually only returned to the airport in september of this year, a few weeks before his death. I feel like he felt his time coming and wanted to spend the rest of his days in the airport.
Sadly the conditions of the airport was cleaner and more humane than the wretched conditions at a homeless shelter. Plus the food was probably better and he was treated like a celebrity there i am sure.
@@bgdlc9591 this clears some things up because in my head I remember watching a documentary that said he had health conditions and moved out. So this story is a little bit misleading in this RU-vid video, they make it seem like he's been there for 40 years when in reality it was in 2008 I think he left? Like another commenter said
Really should learn about the story of this man before blindly commenting on things you know nothing about... Stop being like the rest of the world. plenty of those people.
Once lost my boarding pass at Charles-de-Gaulle airport in France, then missed my flight coz I couldn't board. I was stuck there for 2 days and it was a nightmare to say the least. Respect to this man for his resilience. Rest In Peace.
According to the comment two below yours, they gave him half a million dollars for his story. It was held for him at the Airport bank in his name, but he didn't take it. I don't know if this is true or not.
@@DavidLS1 Hanks looks nothing like the real MR.Narsri but his accent was a perfect representation of what the real MR.Narsri sounds like, as we just saw the real Narsri being interviewed here.
It's almost like the effect that prison mates have when they are released from prison.. they don't know how to live in the outside world anymore. Similarly, he was granted his refugee papers, but still felt more comfortable living in the airport; it was what he knew.
He doesn’tMt need the condolences of a hack that supports war criminals. The US should’ve glasses the bridge with those worthless truckers when we had a chance.
I played hooky a couple of time in middle school. I went to the airport because I loved aviation so much. I would wonder where people were coming from or going to and wished a boarding pass would magically appear in my hand so I could board a jet. But, eventually, I left. As an adult, unless I'm there to pick up or drop someone off for a flight, an airport, to me, is a port of entry or departure. That means I'm GOING somewhere! Blessings to him for being able to do something I never could.
I remember this when it happened ,it was a mess even with world coverage he was left to fend for himself at the time .the only people that would help him was the people at the airport ,I guess he he felt safe there and thought as bad as it was it was better to stay there than face the uncertainty of what he may face if he left .May he rest at peace now .
He liked the airport so much he didn't want to leave. He was probably getting free food and shelter and with no way to get a job there was no point in signing the papers and leaving.
I was a kid when this movie came out and it was promoted so such and huge news story, it's one of my first memories before the boom of social media and 24/7 news
I don't know how he managed to stay at the airport for that long. I have a plane that's due tomorrow and I can't wait to reach my destination already, haha.
Oh so a charmed millionaires death would have saddened you, but a true victim of a broken system is barely worth a comment...? Some metric system you have there
@@dannythompson1948 yes because we know Tom Hanks more. People die every day and it's very sad, but we are going to be more sad for someone who has entertained us for years vs someone we haven't heard of until this very moment. It has nothing to do with money or politics and everything to do with familiarity of that person
I remember seeing the movie years ago. Didn't know he was still living there. Although working at an airport myself I notice there are quite a few regulars who live there. It's not the best place to rest your head but better than being on the street I guess.
I cannot believe I watched this movie so long ago, and this whole time, no one figured anything out for the guy. Doesn't make sense to me. Big sad for this guy, this is textbook exploitation. I thought the film would've helped
@@michaelcharlesthearchangel - this is false, he was given “thousands of dollars” but dude seems to have intentionally done all of this to himself. He’s refused help and refused refugee status… it seems that he enjoyed living his life like this.
Never heard about this until now AT ALL not the movie or the person but tryna watch the movie now for it. It’s around 2hr8min film. Good run time, hope it drags me in.
He did, he was given half a million from Spielberg and put in his name at the airport bank, but he didn't want it and it remained there till today. He didn't want money.
Not one politician lifted a finger to help but literally spent everyday for years using their thumbs virtue signalling on Twitter about helping out the less fortunate and doing our fair share.
Did you spend your thumbs trying to look into this guy's story? Cause he was offered residency in France and Belgium. He refused. First he refused be cause he only wanted to live in England. Then he refused be sure they used his Iranian name on the papers, and not the new British name he had started to use to refer to himself as.
To think of how much money The Terminal made multi-millionaire actors and producers, and then think of how much Terminal Man made from it. Goodnight sweet prince. I'm sorry Hollywood didn't share with you.
From an article of the Guardian published back in 2004: "Alfred had received a cheque of several hundred thousand dollars for his life story. It had been deposited in the airport's Post Office bank. But Alfred had never cared much about money. He was now under the impression that DreamWorks was going to get him a passport and take him to California. Spielberg was going to come to his rescue; Tom Hanks was going to visit him at his bench. In fact, publicity material for the film didn't mention Alfred at all; they were distancing themselves from his depressing story. It wasn't exactly a happy Hollywood ending".
Why do you have to lie? This is demonstrably false, he received a large sum and in reality the movie had little to do with him. He wasn't even the first person to have this happen to him. The reality is he was a very unwell person who created his own prison. He wasn't a political refugee at all, he was not disowned by his family and he did not have a scottish mother. He made that all up, he was deeply delusional and refused medical treatment. He is a tragic figure but he was not taken advantage of.
@@Cyril29a - it’s not a lie, it’s not being informed, big difference. The OP obviously didn’t know the facts and didn’t bother to look it up because often this is a very true story. Even when compensated, many people whom have their stories turned into movies rarely ever see a fair share.
Man has the ability to make exception to all the rules & policies he himself puts in place for the good of someone in need. There shouldn't have even been a story like this to begin with. 😤 Shame on everyone who neglected & confined this man to a single place like this but blessings to everyone who helped when & where they could.
