Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says BHP considering closing down its Nickel West operations is a “terribly sad move”.
Thousands of jobs are now at risk as the company takes a $10 billion hit and goes under review.
“Obviously the personal impact on the 3,000 workers directly affected is horrific,” he told Sky News host Sharri Markson.
“The refinery and mines itself are basically the heart of a town called Kambalda in Western Australia about 600 kilometres west of Perth.
“Obviously the businesses and other workers outside the mines in that town will face an uncertain future - it’s terrible.”

Mining companies will move offshore. Australia is killing off primary industry and mining. There will not be any $$$ soon. Will be all government jobs. Small business getting smashed.

What’s worse is a lot of freshly sacked competent workers won’t pick up work elsewhere, due to the woke hiring policies of big companies.

Well they're already coming from the wokest of them all (BHP) so shouldn't be an issue.

I have worked in the West Australian underground mining industry fo 43 years and this has been coming for a while also our gold mines are battling to stay solvent. What I don't really understand about this segment is no one has interviewed the head of our very large and well paid mines departement on how our mines and I mean most of them have become uncompetetive on the world market given we have huge technology capabilities. Well I do know the answer to this as I walked away from the mining industry last year in disgust at the lack of money being re injected into the mines infrastucture, which was not inforced or considered by the regulator.

We can resolve it by making all of WA a wind farm. There should be 24 months of work for locals.

What they have always done. Not shut down, its called moth balling. Wait for the price to rise. Boom and bust is the nature of mining.
