Chris Scott is so so so right about this. The suspension is the punishment that disadvantages the player for the offence. If you can still win enough votes despite missing games, you should win the award. You can also be an “unfair” player without getting suspended so the “fairest” part of these awards has always been a joke.

Chris Scott is spot on. Being suspended is your consequence and if you can still manage to get enough votes to win, kudos to you.

An incorrect tackling technique isn't the same as an unfair act. There should be context in the act. This is why we need yellow and red cards, and have suspensions for unfair acts.

Really interesting, I can see both sides. I think the Brownlow has to remain B&F but I can see it being dropped from this one. I think I lean towards keeping it, maybe with some refinement though.

All of this sooking because the AFLs golden boy got rubbed out for something every other player would have been rubbed out for (edit: unless you’re a good bloke). If this was any other player in Rising Star contention, they wouldn't be having this discussion.

why not just rule them out for votes for the round they got suspended or the following games they are suspended? If someone can get suspended have a disadvantage and come out on top kinda shows on skill that the award is deserved.

Surely with suspensions the points for Rising Star & Brownlow are self-adjusting? Harley's missing 2 games so he won't be getting any Rising Star points and winning the award is just a little bit harder as a result. If Harley had followed up with a smack across the head for good measure, then say an 8 week suspension would make it nigh on impossible to win that award.

The MRP suspends players for the smallest things, then lets others off for dangerous contact to the head...like Brayden Maynard. Their inconsistency shows that they really don't give too shit's about player safety.

You cannot adjudicate this tackle through the AFL though as this tackle or throw was actually a WWE move.

You can still have a fairest component and change the definition of fairest. Such as disqualifying players who are suspended for MORE than 2 weeks.

for 20 years, or at least since McKernan & Grant lost Brownlows for being ‘unfair’, I’ve thought the Brownlow criteria should be tweaked. The Tribunal should impose penalties like Courts do when imposing penalties with or without a conviction. Suspensions could be imposed with or without ineligibility for the Brownlow as part of the penalty. If Scott Pendlebury, for instance (I am a Carlton supporter), retaliated after being whacked and was suspended in consequence, does it make sense to treat him as not fair enough a player to win a Brownlow?

I haven't respected the Brownlow since Chris Grant and Corey McKernan missed out for some of the most innocuous incidents. And when Goodes got 3 votes for 11 possessions or last year when Horne-Francis I think got 3 votes and had about 7 clangers from not many disposals. The coaches and player awards are the true awards for me.

I agree with Chris Scot, he knows a lot about being an unfair player. Chris is also a deep thinker and should always be listened to in any debate. The whole situation is mess, and it's the media who have never played AFL/VFL football like Robbo and Caro that are the most vehemently against the 'unfair' part being removed from the awards, typical. That's the world we live in today, the media are the moral/ethical arbiters of all things to do with everyone.

I wasn't surprised with the 2 match ban, but at the same time think Harley Reid's tackle looks worse than it was. Because he is expected to make the tackle, the opponent evaded got arms free and hand passed the ball away. But Reid managing to get a grip on the back of the jumper and both players in an awkward position fell to the ground hard. The only fault was not letting his grip on the jumper go sooner than Reid should have.

Don't worry about not feeling sorry for Reid or Darcy. The player I don't feel sorry for is Brayden Maynard.. Angus Brayshaw says hi.

As an Eagles fan I appreciate the sympathy from fans of the 17 other clubs (even teams that absolutely hate us).
