‘The Art of Musk Melon’ - Expensive fruit of Japan

Pricing at least US$90 per fruit, the musk melon is one of the world's most expensive fruits. The musk melon in Japan has been sometimes called 'the king of fruit', and is often given as gifts - as is the common custom in the land of the rising sun. The musk melon can probably be seen as related to its more common variety of cantaloupe and honeydew. However, the musk melon is far more sweeter and juicier. In Shizuoka province of Japan, famed for its agricultural produce, Tomohisa Yamashita has been cultivating these melons for over 40 years and requires a measure of skill, craftsmanship and patience not usually seen in fruit farming. Combining technological advancements such as powered greenhouses paired with farming know-how, Yamashita's musk melons are revered in Asia - a lot of them exported with care to neighbouring countries where they would command much higher prices.
But at the heart of it, Yamashita is a salt-of-the-earth kind of fellow who just wants people around the world to enjoy his produce.

'The Japanese Artisan Series' is a non-commercial project by Edwin Lee (Hong Kong) in collaboration with One Ocean Partners (Singapore). It focuses on documenting little-known but highly skilled artisans and tradespeople across Japan centering on themes of tradition and succession. With Japan's ageing population, low birth rate and reluctance of young workers to enter such niche industries, these people's traditional skills are in danger of being lost.

The best tasting melon that I’ve ever tried. There are many varieties sold at Singapore Takashimaya Japan food fair and we bought the cheapest one at Singapore dollar $150 each, came with nice box. Its super juicy, chewy - not crunchy like some melons, and as sweet as sugar. But strangely, when ripe, it doesn’t have sweet smell like some Australian melons.

The fruit in Japan just must be more expensive. I bought a muskmelon yesterday at the grocery store and it was $1.50

Its expensive because they do not have a class of immigrants to take advantage of to artificially keep the cost of food down. Also the extra care.

Japanese people are just too rich and too much believe almost everything. I can name same taste melons for 80 yen per kilo. And also i can name a more rare variety for again.. about 200¥ per kilo...

@@ThePerpetualStudent In general, they do but I'd classify them as boutique type farmers. Commercial, large farms are different, and operate on basis of quantity instead of quality. That is why you and me can afford and enjoy inexpensive, great tasting fruits. Truth to be told, I'd not spend that kind of money for any fruits that have similar taste/flavor as the basic ones. Maybe taste it once for experience, then move on...Because I have been to many you pick orchards, picking the ripe on the tree fresh fruits, such as peaches, apples, figs (particularly and I grow my own because of that), or strawberry...I can tell you that store bought ones, no matter how expensive they are, can not compare to those picked ripe from the trees...

slchang01 These expensive fruits (melons, grapes, mangoes, strawberries, etc,.) grown in japan are specifically for gift giving purposes. Once in a while a family may splurge and buy one of these expensive fruits for themselves, otherwise normally they would buy the much cheaper ones for themselves.
