I agree. I think the last 2 seasons feel VERY different and I always thought it was just because of the proximity of the story to our time - some parts felt a bit salacious even, to me. I think, like you said, had they focused more on other things and gave the Diana storyline a little less screen time, it might've felt really different. But then again, how do you tell a story surrounding her and have her not be the focus, when even just the memory of her can command attention and steal any spotlight? I don't know that they could've found a happy medium, but I guess I wish they'd tried.

I agree, too. He speaks about distance here, and even though it's been more than 25 years now, I don't think he had enough distance. It's still too soon when it comes to Diana. She's such a special case, and eclipses everything, even now. All that said, even after she left the show, it still didn't regain its former quality level.

@@monmothma3358 I'm glad I'm not alone here with that thought. it still was and is my most favorite Netflix series ever! - such a gorgeous, mature production that will always be the jewel in the Netflix crown.

@@liv97497 Peter Morgan had a PHENOMENAL research department... I'm confident in saying if Diana wasn't featured so heavily in 5 & 6, I'm confident that research team could have found material from the 90's and early 00's to fill out the 20 episodes. Just a random example - and Peter's used this before as an example also: the smog from the 50's. Look how Peter took an event he wasn't even aware of and turned it into one of the best episodes of the series! I have nothing but praise and admiration for Peter Morgan - he's a genius! But it really would have been interesting to see the series remain focused on QEII and the crown itself. (can I be honest for a second: I believe Peter when he said Netflix left them alone - no production notes. But a small bit of me feels that when Netflix saw how popular season 4 was WITH young Diana... I kinda feel Netflix honcho's said....more of this please. you know what I mean? And I say this because Peter was so consistent through 1-4 - 5 & 6 just feel so disjointed - it truly feels like he was writing the last two seasons based off of Netflix Exec's production notes)

@@SAINTOBVIOUS that actually makes a lot of sense. One of the really interesting things about the earlier seasons, personally, was learning about events I had no knowledge of, as someone born in the 90s and not from an English speaking country, let alone a country with any relationship at all with Queen Elizabeth. I'll always wonder what they could've done had they chosen to focus on other things in the later seasons.
