I was homeless for 13 years. Marie is 100% wrong. I've done big city AND small town homelessness, and MOST homeless stay out there by choice. It's cheaper. There are no rules to follow. No bills. No responsibility. Affordable housing is STILL MORE EXPENSIVE with MORE bills than NO RENT AT ALL being on the streets!!! The psychology of it is truly magnificent.

What money in California spent on solving the homelessness crisis? There's still a homeless problem, and it is still out of control. So Gavin Newsom, let's talk about the money you embezzled that didn't go to solving the Homeless Problem.

Having been homeless for 2 and a half years, I want to speak to what Marie was saying, or more specifically, NOT saying. I was not the typical homeless Vet. I ended up losing my condo, my car, my job and everything I owned because a women went after me, and lied in a court of law. It cost me everything. This was back in 2017, and even today, I am still not recovered from that devastation. But, I was in both a regular homeless shelter and in a Veteran's Homeless Program. The majority of homeless people do not want to get out of being homeless. They are being fed by the system. Primarily, they are alcohol and drug addicted individuals. They don't want to work. For Veterans, specifically, that's not as true as it is with non-Vet homeless, but it still prevalent because when you've gotten down that far, it's difficult to get up. You can even see people, homeless, out there asking 'for food.' They don't want food, they want money to go buy alcohol and drugs. If you don't believe me, offer to take one out, and have them taken to a grocery store where you can buy non-perishable food, like peanut butter, apples, crackers, etc. They are interested, they'll say 'Oh, just give me the money, I'll buy what I want.' What they want is cheap booze and weed. Offer to get them a job, or even offer them a job, clean clothes, etc, and they don't want to work. The reason these programs don't work is that you don't remove the root causes. Take away the subsidies they get, get them into counseling. Create community housing, put them into a structured life, make them WORK for what they want, instead of just giving it to them. Because, just giving them what they want, you fulfill their needs, and once you do that, they have no further need for anything else. This is why homelessness isn't going to go away, people, inadvertently, fill the need instead of lifting them up so they can meet their own needs. Once you are homeless, or out on the street, begging, you have entered into a lifestyle where you fall down more and more each day. The idea of giving money as 'help' only helps to reinforce their lower standing. Give them a job, a clean bed, clean clothes and work to repair their self image and you'll start to see homelessness go away. Of course, to do that, you need to bring jobs back to America. We need to stop our almost $1T a year outflow of cash out of the country to buy foreign made product, and invest that money into making it here, and then sending it out to other countries. Here is Washington State, we have a $16.28/hr minimum wage. We are second only to the District of Columbia. Companies can not afford that, but we don't have real industry to give people good paying jobs. Hence, the cost of living goes up. In Seattle, as a single individual, you need to be making almost $42/hr . To live 'comfortably in Seattle, you need to make $120,000 a year, and that's just for ONE person. A family of four needs to make $284,000 a year!!! We need to bring back manufacturing jobs, and NOT Union-backed companies. We need to restore American to what it was in the 50s and 60s, and until we do, things are only going to get worse. Marie needs to spend a couple of months with homeless people to learn what the rest of the panel on The Five understand by sheer reason. She is without any understanding because that's how she was taught. Democratic policies are what are causing all of this, and with California's $20/hr fast food minimum wage, it's actually going to increase the homeless problem in California because a lot of those young people are going to be out of work as businesses no longer can afford to stay in business because regular folk can't afford to buy their product.

The answer to the California Homeless will not be easy, as many of the homeless DO NOT WANT TO COMPLY OR FOLLOW ANY RULES . Handing out free housing, or reduced rent housing has never worked anywhere in the U.S. on a large scale......... Having done years of repairs of Section 8 housing, they do more damage than rent earned for many land lords., It will be a tax payer burden ad infinitum .

American Medical Response has paramedics staked out in shopping center parking lots within a ten mile radius of one another. Anytime he says "we" you have to ask you and whom else? They don't "lose" money they shift it into private interests. Not one program coordinator has been named by this authoritarian dictator in chief. He never mentions that social workers as case managers no longer case manager. All social services have been privatized. There is no elder abuse and neglect follow up. Greg is wrong. There is no affordable housing. 600 square feet of space for 1500 dollars per month? California privatized all human services. This is what created the crisis of mental health and homelessness.
