Productivity Commission Deputy Chair Alex Robson has warned that Australia needs to respond appropriately to global industry policy developments as it can start to “look like protectionism”.
“Although the rest of the world is engaging in more and more industry policy, for a country like Australia, we’re a small open economy,” Mr Robson told Sky News Business Reporter Edward Boyd.
“There are risks in us trying to match that huge spending in the US, Europe and China.”

No they don't. I was a senior public servant in the WA Government many years ago and we tracked where all the money from resource projects went. Employees and suppliers did very well, as did investors, however, the Federal Government did extremely well from direct taxes levied on profits, PAYG etc. Second third and third round effects (suppliers and employees spending their money) also generated huge taxes for the federal government. By way of contrast royalty payments to the state government were meagre particularly if resource projects were located offshore.

So much wrong with this comment lol. Which countries design, innovate and manufacturer smart phones? Last I checked, Australia had little to no impact on whats literally in 99% of everyone’s pockets… and thats just smart phones. Even writing this comment on this platform is hypocritical, not to mention the importance of international trade for Australia’s mining economy - which pretty much makes the majority of the Australian “economy”
