‘Untapped power’: EVs pumped electricity into the grid after transmission towers went down

Sky News host Steve Price says electric vehicles were used to pump power back into Victoria’s electricity grid after the state’s transmission towers went down in Western Geelong in February.
“A disastrous event saw an opportunity to use something called untapped power,” Mr Price said.
“When the transmission lines fell over 16 electric vehicles in a trial located way, way in Canberra detected the disruption and within seconds pumped power back into the electricity grid.”

@SalemikTUBE 15 дней назад
It's not that simple. You cannot pull the plug out of an EV until the car and the charger agree to let you do so (same problem during a fire situation). If during a power outage your "Smart Meter" decides to drain your EV to the grid you will be unable to pull the plug. ""Smart Meters" are not for your benefit.
@imzjustplayin
@imzjustplayin 15 дней назад
@@SalemikTUBE Unless you don't have permission to unlatch/disconnect an EV charging cable, the car isn't going to prevent you from releasing the charging cable. If you're charging at home, you have 100% control over the situation and if you're at a public charging station, they're not likely to do V2G. There is ZERO evidence they're going to force people to participate in V2G and when they start doing V2G, people will do it because there is a financial incentive to do so. The best part about owning an EV is that if any shenanigans happens with the government and the electric grid, you can go off grid entirely. It's pretty clear you don't own an EV.

EVs are a good idea if you have cheap electricity and the vehicle can fulfill most of your needs given its limitations. I don't recommend EVs to everybody because I don't believe they're ready for mass adoption but I do believe EVs are the future. Hybrids are good for most people and have the environmental benefits that are 90% of what EVs powered by fossil fuels are. Only reason to force mass adoption of EVs is because the grid is 100% renewable energy and EVs charging infrastructure is ubiquitous and fast.

@@tin2001 it is proving to be a good motor. It produces the same power as the V8 in the 70 series and mated to the 6 speed auto performs much better in all modes whether unladen or towing and fuel economy is much better. Check out Ronny Dahl's channel or Car Expert for useful reviews. The V8 is only a single turbo but even when tuned is unable to match the 4 cylinder. I think you'll find the Hyundai is not in the same ballpark as the 2.8. Either way, the old V8 is gawn.

I would hope so... But solar feed in rates are about 1/4 of the buy in rate. I imagine battery feed in rates are much the same. So if you charge your EV off full rate power, then feed it back in during a blackout, you're paying a premium for someone else's lights to run. The only place it would be a benefit is somewhere that the car is charged off solar in a guaranteed way, or if they have a deal with the energy provider to pay nothing for the car charging and get nothing back for it charging the grid.
