‘Variations on a Theme of Milán’ by Nin-Culmell is based on the sixth pavane by the Spanish Renaissance composer and vihuelist Milán.
Composer and pianist Joaquín Nin-Culmell (1908-2004) spent much of his childhood in Barcelona, where he studied piano with Conchita Badia, a former student of Granados.
He later studied composition with Paul Dukas and Manuel de Falla. He presented the premièr performance (1936) of Falla’s ‘Le Tombeau de Paul Dukas’ in Paris.
Born into a family of musicians. His father, Joaquín Nin y Castellanos was a well-known composer and pianist and his mother, Rosa Culmell, was a singer.
In 1949, he was appointed to the faculty at the University of California, Berkeley.
Nin-Culmell composed celebrated songs for voice and piano inspired by Spanish folklore in addition to numerous works for solo piano including the popular ‘Tonadas’. He wrote two ballets: ‘El Burlador de Sevilla’ in three tableaux (1957-65) and ‘Le Rêve de Cyrano’.
Mastered by John Taylor. Played on a Michael Gee guitar.
