Exeter University Disciplinary Hearing Targets Student for Private Conversation.
In this episode of 'Cancelled Voices' we meet Rob Ivinson, a student at Exeter University who was subjected to a disciplinary hearing for comments he made in the privacy of his own room. The university took action based on a complaint from a neighbour who overheard the conversation.
Key issues in the hearing included:
Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom - Ivinson argues his right to express his views, even if they are unpopular.
Gender Fluidity and Veganism - The overheard comments centered around these topics.
Privacy - Ivinson's comments where overheard while he was in the privacy of his own room.
Due Process - The fairness of the hearing is questioned, with Ivinson feeling unfairly targeted.
The outcome resulted in a disciplinary contract, restricting Ivinson's behaviour for the rest of his time at the university. He also lost a prestigious mentor position.
Ivinson feels the process was Orwellian and chills free speech on campus.
This interview delves into the implications of such disciplinary actions on free speech and academic freedom, particularly in contexts sensitive to gender fluidity and other personal beliefs. It also touches on the broader impacts on privacy rights when personal conversations lead to university-level sanctions. Through Rob's story, we explore the tension between community standards and individual rights, highlighting the challenges faced by students in today's academic environments.
At CAF we believe that this interview must raise awareness about how Freedom of Speech, and Academic Freedom in particular, are threatened at Exeter University.

This is an absolute shocker. I'm an alumnus of Exeter and I can't imagine that something like this could have happened when I was there (in the early-mid 2000s.) Things must have gone insane in a relatively short space of time! As an aside, I think it's a mistake ever to admit to anything in a situation like this. I think Mr Ivinson should have issued a flat denial, said the person/s must have misheard him through the wall. He could then have fought fire with fire, so to speak, by making some explosive counter allegations against the creepy individual making the complaint - which the uni authorities would then also have to investigate. We shouldn't be in this utterly mad situation, but if we are, it's often best to try and play the system against itself, IMO.

Unfortunately, that's not going to happen. The UK went the hate speech path all the way. It'll take time for that to correct. Just look at Scotland and their new law...

I always thought universities were the places where freedom of speech, different opinions & ideas were encouraged , when did it change ? Why did it change? Why have we let it change?

I was a student at Exeter University, graduating about 20 years ago. Thinking back to that time, I simply can't begin to imagine that an undergraduate would have been formally disciplined merely for expressing an opinion - at least provided that it were not something meeting an extreme bar for criminal incitement, etc. I think this is true of things said openly and publicly, much less something creepily overheard through the wall of a private room! It's a very good question to ponder when madness took over? I know some of the academics who taught me have since retired - and one is now sadly passed away to my knowledge. However many of the younger ones are still in post. I know of one (now moved to another university) who now seems fully signed up to the woke agenda to judge from that person's twitter/X posts. Yet I wouldn't have thought this person was unreasonable or intolerant back in my time as a student... I dunno. I guess there is a generational shift over time as older people retire and younger people come in. But people can be also infected with this mind-virus and go crazy, I'm afraid.

What is most worrying is that this young man feels compelled to justify his opinions. What he said to his friend in the privacy of his own room is noone else's business. This is how far we have travelled from any notion of free speech. I am not defending or attacking his actual opinions because my view and everyone else's view is irrelevant.

This decision gave his neighbor the power to decide whether he met conditions. And encourage her to listen in. And instead of having her work out her concerns with him directly, it teaches her to go straight up the chain of command over disagreements.

This guy is equating his neighbour being exposed to his loud ranting late at night with a girl in distress for listening into a conversation she was not invited to be a part of. No. You being loud makes your conversation everybody's business, not private. Saying that you're taller than average doesn't mean you can't control your voice volume. Or, if you want private conversation and you're very liud then go to the sports field and yell over the phone to your Aussie mate about what you hate. Noise disturbances include the content of the noise. Someone yelling at their spouse might cause way more distress to a neighbour trying to sleep than happy party sounds. He keeps claiming he has a right to say what he wants on the privacy of his own space, but he is the one crossing the noise barrier, saying it outside that private sphere. I just read this guy as being shocked to find out that his arrogance followed by an apology doesn't prove to be met with approval in the UK. Interesting how he keeps refering to ' these two women ' who are holding him captive to a university disciplinary action. And at the outset of the story he referred to the niceness of the interviewer who then turned cold on him. He even admits his noise was ' the battering ram ' but doesn't see how that served his private speech a warning????
@susiegreaves7283
@susiegreaves7283 Месяц назад
You are missing the point. If the noise level was disturbing his neighbour, she had recourse to a complaints procedure. She had NO right whatsoever to delve into the content of his conversation. You seem not to understand the concept of free speech.
@katejudson8907
@katejudson8907 Месяц назад
@@susiegreaves7283the content of a conversation of 1) a person who has been given a mentorship role, ie of younger students on campus, whom he actually derides at the end of his comments as being weak. 2) is intruding on his neighbour's space with the content of his conversation. Like, she woulda had to use a noise cancelling effort to block it out. Why do you expect the content, if it is concerning for the recipient of that, to ' ignore ' it? You reckon I don't understand freedom of speech. I reckon you, and this guy, don't recognise your freedom to swing your arms about wildly stops when your fist hits another person's face. Ie freedoms come with responsibilities. He wasn't willing to ascend to responsibility and see that nobody's freedoms overide all else.
@katejudson8907
@katejudson8907 Месяц назад
@@susiegreaves7283 besides, this post on this page is a distraction from sharing and documenting this current university craze of restriction imposed on academics to rigorously discuss serious ideas freely with their peers, which is a huge problem, with extensive consequences. This student wasn't doing that- he happened to be on campus when he was expressing his PERSONAL OPINIONS , not research topic, to someone who we couldn't even hear, so this isn't about silencing academic debate or dialogue in the academy. This student's complaint is a social responsibility which has been failed on his behalf and because he demanded to say what he liked in a manner that entruded another sutudent's privacy, possibly sense of safety, he blames her for listening in to a private conversation she could not block out and blames the academy for a disciplinary action when he refuses to accept it, assuming it's about the content. It may well be that the content he is defending makes him no longer a candidate for the mentorship, which was under examination at the so called hearing. It's a grant. All grants have conditions. But it wasn't an academic position. So this isn't an academic discipline, in my view. But he's hitching his sorrows and sense of entitlement to the bigger issue. As I stated before, frankly, I think this post is a discredit to the organisation.
