One of a series of friend or foe identification films made for pilots, gun crews, and civil defense workers, "Identification of Aircraft German Pursuit Planes" focuses on Germany's Messerschmitt Me 109. This aircraft, also called the Messerschmitt Bf 109, was a single seat fighter aircraft made for World War II. It’s first flight was in 1935 but only became operational in 1937. Mainly manufactured to be an interceptor aircraft, the aircraft eventually became a multitask fighter.
The aim of the film is to identify Me-109 / Bf 109 aircraft. It provides the distinguished features of the aircraft which made it recognizable from different angles. This film teaches the aircraft's characteristics, vulnerabilities, and strengths. Portions of the film are animated, and were probably created by the Walt Disney Studio.
(0.11) Title shows “GERMAN PURSUIT AIRPLANES.” (0.18) “MESSERSCHMITT ME 109.” (0.28) Me 109 aircraft are flying in the sky. (0.37) a bird view from within the plane. (0.51) two bombs dropped from the aircraft on the ocean creating an explosion. (01.02) Royal Air Force members are in a room with a poster of different aircraft and the Swastika logo. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Get a load of those animations for the planes! They have that classical disney "vibration" look and I imagine people watching this at the time were able to learn well from them.

It's interesting that they specifically compare the 109 to the P-40, since even at the start of US involvement the P-47 and P-51 were becoming available to the USAAF. Maybe the prime worry was that the Warhawk looked close enough to the 109 to cause possible friendly fire incidents, while the other two were either distinctive enough to avoid such mistakes, or just not in sufficient supply in theater at the time it was made.

P-47s didnt see combat until mid 1943, so no they weren't readily available. Same with Mustangs which were first used by the RAF but haven't seen combat with the USAAF

Probably a mid 1941 video since the focus is on the 109E with verbal reference to the 109F. RAF combat with Tomahawks was in June 1941 in the middle east and North Africa. 112 Sqn with tiger teeth.

The "Newer Version" is probably the ME-109 F

P40 vs 109 was a common feature in North Africa and the early portion of the Italian campaign. The British had plenty of this experience to pass on to the US.

True. The RAF gave 57 FG tactical trg in Sudan & Egypt in 1942. Their Sqns then were attached to RAF WINGS in Oct for El Alamein. In late Nov the US pilots returned to their FG (at Gambut IIRC) to train other P-40 pilots.

When they describe "only the latest models" of the Me 109 as lacki g tail struts that implies the Bf 109F which entered service in 1940 and was in combat in fairly small numbers during the Battle of Britain. The Curtiss P 40 entered production in March 1940 but the need to divert most production to a large French order meant that sustained deliveries to the USAAF didn't start until January 1941 with the improvec P40B model. That suggests that this film may date from Pearl Harbour and the U.S.entry into WW2. The absence of P 39 Airacobras and.P 38 Lightnings which entered somewhat troubled service withthe USAAF in 1941 also suggests this film was produced earlier rather than later in 1941.

the Allison -33 & -39 engines also had problems in the P-40 at that time, aside from the single supercharger issue. Brit Tomahawk combat with 109s started in mid '41, so the flim was likely later than that given the RAF feedback.

Im so glad I don't live in that era of BBB...Big Brass Bands which trumpeted unpleasant and inappropriate cartoon-like music for everything: movies, documentaries, plays, concerts, propaganda films and yes, cartoons. 😂

It's a military brass band playing the official song of the U.S. Air Force for a training film aimed at pilots and other aircrew. I guess you had to be there.

This is exactly how annoying how I was when I was 7. Or when I had my first beer. Or when I acted my shoe size, or my first toke, or my first sip of wine at age 3. Unfortunately, some people are too thick to mature. No problem though, pacifiers to suck on are easy to steal from your classmates, bozo. Nappy time for you, punkin'.
