Hi everyone! I just finished reading “1Q84” by Haruki Murakami; this is the LONGEST book I have ever read, at over 1300 pages! Even though 1Q84 is technically a trilogy, I’m counting it as a single book. This was my first venture into Haruki Murakami’s work; I’d heard it was a bit on the weird side, but that didn’t deter me. I’d wanted to read 1Q84 for a while as I assumed it was a retelling of “1984” by George Orwell, a book which I thoroughly enjoy and feel is a very important piece of work. So, after all that, what did I think of Murakami’s 1Q84? Tune in to find out!

Go for it mate! There’s a comment on this video from someone saying a similar thing and I replied with some tips, if that helps.

That is a monster book, don't think I've finished one that long ever lol. I'm going to have to steal you air filled pastry metaphor you used as I know just what you mean with some books. Congrats on finishing it even if it was off the walls weird from what you were describing!

I can’t take the credit for that metaphor but as soon as I read it I felt it was perfect to describe my experience with this book.

Hat's off to finishing it! :) The longest one I ever read was Les Miserables (The edition I read was 1463 pages!) The book sounds absolutely bonkers. I might have to give it a shot at some point. Great review! :)

Thank you! I’m going to do the March of the Mammoths reading challenge next month, where you make an effort to read a mammoth (a book over 800 pages). To be fair, as I said in the video, I started 1Q84 in December so it took my two months to finish, I read one chapter a day on average over that period. I always have a “slow burn book” on the go that has longer chapters/is more challenging alongside a bunch of others; it’s a way of making them less intimidating to pick up and ensuring that those more challenging books that you still do want to read at some point don’t just get indefinitely snubbed in favour of easier books.

Another strategy I use, and highly recommend especially for big books, is to always aim for a minimum of 25 pages a day. For me, since I read multiple books at once that applies across all current reads, but if you’re focused on just one single book, you’d be amazed at how quickly you can get through it. At that rate you could get through a 500 page book in 20 days. And that’s assuming you only read those 25 pages on all those days. Even just a few more pages than that on some of those days can pare down that reading time by a couple days.

He is definitely an acquired taste. I enjoyed 'After Dark', hated 'The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle' and yet have to tackle this book, it is certainly not near top of my TBR!

@@TheLimitlessLibrarian Hi, the Limitless Librarian! What a lovely surprise to see you reply! ❤ The last Haruki Murakami book I read was "Norwegian Wood". It's really... sad and beautiful. It really encompasses youth, individual struggle with politics, and emotional journey to me. The film is pretty gripping too, in my opinion. I read some of his other books back in the "fiction reading" section in the university where I did my bachelor's... but that was in 2012, so I don't remember much! Haha. But I remember his description of snow buried landscape. It was beautiful, albeit in English, and my English was still developing back then. I'm currently reading another Japanese book, but it's... maybe half-fiction, half-philosophy/psychology? It's quite an interesting book!

If you like 1984 you should have a look at Ira Levens "this perfect day".
