Lesson on the infectious condition known as Q fever. Q Fever is an interesting and rare infectious disease due to infection by the bacteria known as Coxiella Burnetii, which is a bacteria that infects farm animals such as cows, sheep, and goats. Upon infection, Q fever has a very long and variable incubation period. Symptoms of Q fever are quite variable and can cause anything from endocarditis, pneumonia, and hepatitis. In this lesson, we discuss the transmission of this bacteria, along with risk factors, signs and symptoms, and how we can diagnose and treat it. Furthermore, we discuss the condition known as post Q fever fatigue syndrome, which can be debilitating for a minority patients even after treatment of the initial infection.

I live in the Beef Capital of Australia and grew up hunting with family and eventually became a slaughterman like them. I and another young man both of us 19 caught Q fever out of the entire abattoir. We both ended up in serious condition with the acute symptoms. The first 8-12 hours I felt like I had caught influenza, a cough and aches and pains, but after that 12 hour period it was all down hill. The lumps came up in hours and I couldn't stand or walk but the pain in my joints and muscles became unbearable. It felt like I was having convulsions but being completely awake, then to the other extreme and I was out cold. I was sick for roughly 7 days, bed ridden with a constant fever and I don't remember much. When I was barely conscious, it was as painful like the first 36 hours but felt like I had a really bad case of influenza/pneumonia. 25 years later I suffer from chronic fatigue, chronic muscle pain mainly in my back and the specialist says that the spondylosis in my back may be related to Chronic Q fever. Unfortunately there is no "real" cure and even if you get treatment, it may come back just as bad. But you don't need to suffer with it. A good healthy diet with red meat and exercise you can live with it but eventually you will end up needed some assistance like medications and physical therapy. I have had a happy life with kids and worked hard without even knowing why I was tired and in so much pain all the time.

I got q fever back in 2018…. I had constant fever and pain in my joints i got lumps all over my arms and legs. I couldnt even walk because the lumps on my feet were painful. I went to doctor in El Paso and he said i had fatty lumps and signed me up for surgery 3 months from that day. I went to Juarez in Mexico and they did all kinds of work on me and gave me strong antibiotics and in 14 days it went away. My joints still hurt everytime i get a cold.

In my country we had a coronavirus outbreak in the same area where we had a q fever outbreak years ago. They now think there might be a connection. The dust that gave them q fever makes them more vulnerable for Covid19. Excellent video. Suggestion: A video on the long term consequences for Covid19 survivors.

I live in a town that has regular outbreaks of Q fever. We are the Beef capital of Australia so it's relative. However our rates of Covid were significantly lower than towns around us. I am not vaccinated and have Q fever, I got the severe acute symptoms and as result live with chronic issues, yet I never caught it even after being in direct contact multiple times. I know others who had similar experiences because as I mentioned Q fever is a large problem here.

COVID 19 is via a virus while Q Fever is due to bacteria. RE: Long term consequences of COVID 19, search for “Long COVID” Note: First case of Q Fever in the Philippines found today 21June2024 through imported US goats.

can q fever lay dormant or asymptomatic for months and/or years and then become symptomatic and cause organ damage? thank you for such clear, easy to understand videos. 💕

I’m suffering from Post Q Fever Fatigue Syndrome. Please can you tell me what treatment is available to help with this.

As far as I know there is nothing at the moment mate. There is a treatment with HCQ but it can take up to 2 years and results aren't promised. I have been living with it for 25 years now and I have found over time it's easier to manage. I suffer fatigue, chronic back pain from myalgia and spondylosis among other symptoms. If you can find a sympathetic doctor who has dealt with Q fever before, they can help out with a diet changes and medication if it's bad. I am on pain medication but has given me the ability to live a life with my kids again. Don't lose hope, we as humans are must stronger than we know. It will get easier. 😊
