“Big Mick” Hughes on Mixing Metallica, Low End, and LEO Line Array 

I agree, Line Array changed so much. I became a Live sound Engineer 27years ago after seeing my first concert ever being Metallica through what was then a Point Source array at the gig. I remember the big Blue Boxes hanging i would learn later working for that local company once i got into the game that they were Turbosound TMS3's. Over the years moved to the UK where my PA company was their main European provider and close friend of Big Mick with the what was EV MT4's and lots of them, then on to Nexo Alpha as the last Point Source systems Metallica took out. Enter Line array Era and while coverage and lack of comb filtering was a huge benefit .. something was lost and its taken ALONG time to get that back. Last week i heard Gojira through a D&B J system , not even an a SL system and it was the first time in a long time the PA sounded like it wanted to break your chest in with not having used a ridiculous amount of Subs on the deck. Its great the Tech have finally rounded itself out.

He is 100% correct about the kick drum....I have only come across one local sound guy who could run solid sound wherein you could feel the music and the kick was prominent. Seems most people think simply sitting behind a board makes you a sound engineer, not true!

Saw metallica in mannheim in 2019. It was a outdoor show and the sound was amazing. Nerver heard something more powerfull than metallica. Great job big mick. Keep on rockin.

Well, this explains why Metallica doesn't tour around the Christmas season.

Some of the best sounding touring system's I heard is turbosound flashlight floodlight rigs which I had the chance to hear in 2018 truly mind blowing.

I've heard several rigs with 1100's as subs and they are absolutely superb in every way. Might be one of the very best subs in existence today.

I was always a big mixer of a big drum sound.. Beta 91, Beta 52 in and out on the kick.. That snap and boom... snare top and bottom...tight bass guitar, DI and a beta 57 on a speaker... ... and a huge vocal that I usually doubled at FOH to fatten it up... I still have an old urei tape delay echo and compressor. everything else sort of falls into place. I've mixed on some big PA's but nothing like that .... lol

if i want clear cristal comp with no coloring or saturation and its accompanying harmonic distortion only clean unoticible compression i should use plug ins better right ??? i mean what can i get a more transparent compresion so it doesent hurt my tone when i sing but stil compress alot with the RNC fmr comp or the midas and beriger plug ins like stereo lesiure comp that come with the xr 12 and mr 12.........compreser hard and cleannnn cause i have to listen to foh always BIG HUGSSSS
