That is kinda funny. Pat is known more for wearing the horizontally-striped shirts. The day he comes on stage in a vertically-striped shirt, people are gonna freak!
this is not just the best performance of this composition, it is literally its ideal performance, it is impossible to imagine a better performance than this, and not a single mistake, not a single hesitation was made by any of the members of this group, as if they were mentally connected with each other
Piano is a percussion instrument. It has little hammers that hit strings, the keys are like the mallets, like a xylophone, also a percussion instrument.
I am so grateful at how much amazing footage like this exists on RU-vid. We are exceptionally fortunate to be able to come watch history at our fingertips! This was incredible.
@@musopaul5407 Duh. I did not actually see that in your comment. Can't believe we lost Chick recently too. My boy and I are off to see Herbie in Wellington in a couple of weeks and he said the same thing.
@@rufusthompson3055 I was lucky to see Jack play with McCoy Tyner in New York in 2012 while we were on holiday. He was fantastic, as well as seeing Mc Coy for the one and only time.
Yeah well the Nobel Prize is a deep state propaganda tool, so i woud think twice about that... It's one of the greatest manipulations in the world. So many people believe that the Nobel Prize is the highest archievement one can get. That's because hollywood and media made it out to be that way. At it's core, it's really just a tool to fool people into thinking that suspicious bioweapons research is a great archeivement for medicine, etc. That kinda stuff.
Actually, his guitar had a build in Synthclavir controller for MIDI which enabled him to play with sampled sounds. But due to the technology being in such an early stage at that time, the controller was this huge thing. In a real way, he was doing what Matt Belamy is currently doing.
@@brendangilmore4297 Type in "Pat Metheny Synthclavier" and you'll see him demonstrating that thing, composing a song using sampled donkey braying, which he says is "the most authentic blues singer." A very funny clip.
i saw herbie plating with just an ipad as backing. still amazing. went down for 15 seconds. it cut out and the engineer came straight out with another ipad, switched the leads and herbie din't miss a beat. the new standard all stars gig was a night to remember
I love Pat`s chromatic lines and complex outside cadenzas in combination with his super melodic/ simple melody/ bluesy approach. This is the perfect balance as a music for a big crowd and the jazz gourmets as well. It satisfies everyone who enjoys improvised music, no matter how advanced his/her ability is ,to really understand Jazz . Just beautiful.
@@tobiasrechsteiner8459 Yes it is great. Though the chords are not to difcult to play through, he is exploring them to the next level. If you like Pat`s style, I recommend Pat`s record: "Question and Answer" This is up to my taste the best he ever played and goes much beyond the Cantaloup solo here. Cheers
@@MrRioso-ry1hb As a learning jazz guitarist, what do you mean by "hard changes"? Changes are just... changes to me. You find the scales and arpeggios that fit a particular chord quality+extensions and cook up lines based on what you have practiced, that's it. Chordal solo is a different beast and i admit not knowing much about that area.
Herbie here blowing us away with his absolute swagger. This Dave Holland chap… laying down that carpet like a boss. So tight.. Jack DeJohnette…. Absolutely blinding drummer. Ties it all together… building the foundations for the band to soar into the stratosphere.. And Pat Metheny…. An alien if you ask me. Incredible player. And such a strange man xD
It's too good, man. Just when I think Pat's going to wind down the solo, he takes it up a notch. Incredible. It was too bright, I couldn't keep my eyes open.
And what is really Great - he is married to Polish lady from Krakow south of Poland. And therefore he very often comes to my contry for concerts. We almost treat him, as a Pole. Pawel.
Jack's playing is so tasteful, and Dave and he are locked. Herbie's ear is from some other planet. Pat's gonna Pat, absolutely amazing. It doesn't get much better than this.
I saw Pat Metheny with Gary Burton Quintet in the mid 70’s and again with his band at Vermont Jazz in ‘77. Not sure if Lyle Mays was there. I’d have to go back & find my slides. (35mm, K64 and Ektachrome) Who knew how far this formerly young man would go. You knew the cat was a bad dude on the axe but still…..it’s like Tony Williams @ 17 playing with Miles. You knew he was one of the best but the extent of his legacy was unknown. Now, in 2022, Lyle Mays has passed on and Pat Metheny is considered an old tiger. Funny how our perspective changes as the shadows stretch out behind us in our youth and then start to stretch out in front of us as we age. Shalom Aleichem to anyone who sees this
As Frank Zappa once said, “Jazz is not dead. It just smells funny.” But seriously folks, there is a lot of variety in what can be called Jazz. This kind of Fusion was something I remember well and I still love it. In certain circles, Swing is very much alive with young folks dancing up a storm. So, don’t knock it and try out new (to you) stuff!
I love all genres of music but still jazz is foremost on my list . Always love Herbie but Pat Metheny is really killing the guitar love the sound of the bass and of course the drums. Can somebody resurrect this kind of music please. Bring back the golden age of jazz. I am old but not dead yet I still love to listen to this. Thank you premium RU-vid.
Sallie Mar, I don’t listen to music anymore like I used to but watching Hiromi with the trio is more than enough to assure me that creative music will never die, it will evolve and change. I can still recall seeing the CTI Jazz All Stars at Central Park. Grover playing Mr. Magic and really doing it right. These cats were all playing their best live. Creed Taylor had made jazz music commercially viable and the blending of R&B with pop elements had really permeated the music. Herbie did his Headhunters fusion of soul/r&b/electronic and then there was Pat in the late 70’s bringing it back to REAL.
Dave Holland deserves some props here too. The whole band is fantastic and he's helping enormously holding down that low end and propelling things along. I am also wondering where Pat and Jack got their shirts.
I love when Dave looks back over at Herbie in complete amazement toward the end of Herbie's solo, smiles, shakes his head, and gets back to playing his bass!
Yes. I was really cerebral in listening for what and how they were playing and I found Herbs held the spotlight for me. His diverse, dynamic and percussive elements tickled me. I think if there were actually a 'best guitarist in the world' it would have to be a keys player and not an actual guitar player.
Having watched a few videos on Haromi, a pianist with an incredible technique, I watch Herbie, of whom I have always been a fan, and I see that the greats, like him, not only have the technique, but lead to an emotion. And that is not given to just anyone.
For me, Hancock defined “in the pocket” for keyboard players. Man, does he swing. I’d call him an athletic keyboard player, too-really quick, accurate, big hands, complex, Barry Sanders-caliber improvisation. Or just HerbieH, a one-of-a-kind. 🇺🇸
We are so fortunate to have this, to re-live over and over. It's here for future generations. Stunning musicianship. This is exceptional. Pat and Herbie are exceptional contrasts in style, equally compelling, and so different. With both, they're all in. Jack and Dave are stupid-great. This excels on so many levels.
J'étais à ce concert, ils sont revenus après l'orage .le concert qu ils donneront ce soir la était de l'ordre du miracle. Je ne m'en suis toujours pas remis. Complètement surréaliste. Merci a eux 3.🙏🙏🙏
The Master Hancock and one of the great guitar masters Metheny. He and George Benson the best jazz guitarists of that golden generation of music, plus others. But on paino it is Herbie. What a great video.
Saw him play the most lyrical & tuned(in)drum kit ever @ iron horse, Noho,Ma..in the 90'$..the kit was singing I swear,..like a calimbra or glockenspiel..or maybe he tuned to everyone in the band man..or to Cmaj7thadd9th..anywho.. the Man was tuned in..
You have four gentleman here who each individually have such huge knowledge of musical form, harmony, rhythm ….everything. And they also love and respect each other and live within the true jazz fusion we can just walk up to each other and start a conversation. No one had to shed cantaloupe Island for the gig if you know what I mean.
