Oona's bodyguard to give your rogue faeries the chance of having your opponent discard their hand. Either they be summoned by bitterblossom alela or personal rogue fairies you own like brazen borrower. Riptide laboratory to bounce wizards back to your hand and replay them such as spellstutter , vendillion clique, sower of temptation etc. I have other suggestions as well.
I'm glad to hear people say Alela is stronger. She fits so much better with the identity of Faerie typal, trying to be tricky and cast things at instant speed
I thought so too, until a played a bunch of games with her. She's clunky; you have barely any Faeries to trigger her Goad ability on turn 3 or 4 if you ramp and her 1/1 ability requires she live a turn cycle and you have flash creatures (if you have removal or Counterspell instants instead of flash creatures you may not find a good spot to cast them) otherwise you won't be developing your board. She turns out to be like a turn 5 or 6 commander, which would be fine if the deck is constructed differently (a lot more than 10 card changes) but as it is it doesn't do anything impactful in the first 6 turns while it's waiting for Alela to come down. The deck does fine ish as a Tegwyll deck too, but the real secret is that Obyra is the best commander option; she's going to get in a lot of drain as the game progresses when you drop her turn 2 and there are many great 3 and 4 drops that have attack/damage triggers to take advantage of Obyra being in play turn 2.
@@jayjayhooksch1Alela is great, you just need to have proactive instant speed stuff in your deck, but yeah, you do need to add those cards in. I have an Alela build with 44 instant speed spells and this is not an issue, she's great and is so fun to play.
@@TristanB4 do you have a link to a list? I couldn't get it to work with 30 instant speed/flash spells, and a lot of them were reactive. Wouldn't mind seeing a more proactive flash/instant based build.
„Your goal is to have 7 unicorns in your play area…“ „That is always my goal.“ 😂😂😂 Rachel is so hilarious. Always putting a smile on my face. Thank you very much and greetings from Germany.
I'd strongly recommend [Mari, the killing quill] from New Capenna, it gives deathtouch to all your rogues which includes the faerie tokens, stops death triggers and give you treasure and card draw whenever you hit an opponent with a rogue
This is the type of synergy I went for with my Obyra build. Obyra turn 2, into turn 3 Gix/Grazilaxx/Feywild Visitors/Nettling Nuisance/Curse of Verbosity/Talion's Messenger. Or turn 4 Grim Hireling/Bident of Thassa/coastal piracy/reconnaissance mission/dowsing dagger. All good attack/damage triggers stuff I missed Mari, but I'm not sure I have enough Rogues to support her. Do you think 12 Rogues + Alela, Tegwyll's Scouring and Shadow Puppeteers is enough Rogue sources for her? 8 of them are 3 drops or lower.
Nifty include for sure. Although I don't think it stops death triggers. Mari exiles them after they die, so they still get the trigger. Stops graveyard shenanigans though.
Loved all the suggestions but "Illusionist's Gambit" just gave me two games on a pre con championship. So I refuse to let it go. Having someone thinking that will kill you and them laying down all his defense is marvelous. Awesome video! Thank you sooo much!
The Bang for Your Buck breakdown is excellent. Such a great idea. Really puts the value of the deck into an apples to apples comparison. So helpful. Thank you
I actually bought unstable unicorns for my sister for Christmas a few years ago. I actually noticed that it was much like playing MTG, with a communal deck, and so from there it was actually pretty easy to convince them to start playing magic... which is now all my sister ever wants to do. She literally complains at me "I haven't played in like three days. OMG"
I'm running Leyline and Orrery in my personal list. I hope someday we get a faerie lord that gives your faeries flash that way your non flash faeries can get in on the instant speed trickery
Been playing Faeries in Modern ever since Lorwyn, so a few cards they missed that I am considering putting in for your all considerations: Slitherwisp: The better Wavebreaker Hippocamp for this deck. Or run both! Cackling Counterpart: Faeries have strong etb effects that usually are at instant speed. (Spellstutter Sprite, Mistbind Clique) For 3 mana, you can make a copy that does it again! Evacuation: Great instant speed board Wipe since faeries like to be bounced Familiar's Ruse: Counterspell 2, especially with Alela. Cunning Evasion/Grazilax: You block my Spellstutter Sprite? Oop, now it's back in my hand. Snapcaster Mage: The best honorary Faerie.
hullbreaker is there to make a combo.. cloud of faeries+solring, infinity mana. if you have Obyra, you deal infinity damage from ETB.. you can also combo with snap and other sinergies. picklock prankster can mill/make you draw your entire deck
@@craigandrews7544cast Sol Ring, bounce cloud of faeries. Tap Sol Ring for two mana. Cast cloud of faeries, bounce Sol Ring, untap two Lands. Repeat for infinite mana and infinite ETBs.
@@craigandrews7544 if I got it right: - Have Hullbreaker Horror, Sol Ring and an untapped land giving blue mana in play - Play Cloud of Faeries with Sol Ring and the blue land, untapping the blue land and another random one - Return Sol Ring to your hand - Play Sol Ring with one colorless mana floating, bounce Cloud of Faeries, now you're back to step 1 - Rince and repeat for profit Or you can just bounce Cloud of Faeries itself when it EtBs, since it's mana-neutral and you can replay it forever.
@craigandrews7544 Have Hullbreaker Horror out. Cast Cloud of Faeries, bouncing something (anything) and untapping two lands. Cast Sol Ring -- Hullbreaker Horror triggers, target your own Cloud of Faeries, returning it to your hand. Sol Ring resolves, tap it for 2 mana. Tap your untapped Island to cast Cloud of Faeries again. HH triggers, target your own tapped Sol Ring. Cloud of Faeries resolves, untap your two lands. You are now +1 mana. Repeat the loop until you have as much mana as you want.
YES! I’ve been wanting more good faerie cards forever and these are the colors I was hoping for! Finally, my faerie control deck can have more than 10 faerie cards and still work the way I want it! I didn’t know these faerie cards came out until this video.
Shame they lost a lot of people because of the commander 2018 debaucle. I still love them and watch them for their commnder previews and precon upgrades.
Other considerations -- in some places, I really like Familiar's Ruse over Counterspell. I love the bounce-faerie archetype, so anything to bounce creatures back to my hand so I can re-cast Spellstutter Sprite or Mistbind Clique or some other faerie is wonderful. Along those same lines, Curfew is really powerful for getting around untargetable creatures and affecting everyone on the board -- as well as letting you recycle one of your own creatures.
Played this upgraded deck last friday and won so big lol, managed to prowl notorious throg and also spawn 9 faerie rouges, also had that one fae (forgot the name) that gets a +1/+1 for every opponent you attack, quickly became a 17/17 with flying and no one had reach or flying lmao, then I board wiped everything but my faeries and won with 37 health
My fiancée plays faeries and I'm excited to show her this precon. I spent a pretty penny building her an Oona centered deck a few years ago and it's going to be great to sit down and go through this with her.
if you want to be kinda staxxy, Mistbind Clique and Deadeye Navigator lock up your opponents lands every turn. It costs 3UUU to do that (if you habe 3 opponents). If you through Cloud of Faeries in to Champion the Mistbind when you blink it, Cloud untaps the lands to blink the Clique
One thing I found really odd about the precon is that they put the newer art for distant melody, instead of the old Lorwyn art that actually depicts faeries. I'd consider that a must switch to make in the deck lol
I just bought this deck and have been making some changes already but this should help a bit. One of the cards i immediately added is Dire Undercurrents, my store had one in its case, its an enchantment that whenever a blue creature etbs under your control you may draw a card and whenever a black etbs under your control you may have target player discard a card.
Nice find for dimir decks in general. I might add that to my Wilhelt or negathrod decks. Ngathrod in particular likes discarding things into graveyards
I also play alela,i added these cards to the deck picklock prankster, threadbind clique, into the fae court,n for removal i put path of peril,n added one more faerie bladecrafter so hav 2 in deck now, only added 2 cards command zone suggested, bitter blossom n skull clamp,n deck plays out great dont remove temple of false card helped me get out high cost cards early so often.thx cammand zone wit ur help n my own changes ur vids help alot thx.
im havent been playing magick for too long, and your episodes really help me get a better idea of the decks because your reasoning is always so on point! Thank u very much :)
I took this deck and bought the old Throne of Eldrain brawl deck plus some other various cards and built a new esper deck and I love it so much. It’s not strictly faerie tribal anymore but still mostly faeries. It’s so fun to play.
I just picked up this precon yesterday, and I loved playing it. I also got an extended art Court of Garrenbrig in the extra pack, which I immediately traded outright at my flgs for a Bitterblossom.
Rats, seeing this video after 3 months most of the cards that were suggested jumped in price significantly. Bitterblossom did go done, and I’ll pick one up for value alone. I love your Precon upgrade videos, you explain things very well, and your videos are always entertaining as well. I just used a little Christmas bonus to pick up both of the Wilds of Eldraine precons. Upgrading Precons is a hobby of mine, as a Standard Player only since Ixalan, I only started playing Commander a year ago, so I don’t have a large collection. I figured Faeries are very popular, and I’m very Boros/Mardu in my tastes, so I thought I’d branch out and try a tempo deck.
Angels trumpet is something I’ve started putting in all my go wide token decks. It has won me so many games. It’s definitely slept on for a 3 mana artifact
@@jacksonhall2334I went 3 wins 2 draws and the best thing I got was virtue of strength and I didn’t even use it Lol but yeah the set is really great especially with the adventures
Kindred discovery could be a good one. Its another good draw engine. Pretty much whenever you play or attack with a chosen creature type, you draw a card. Its awesome ^^
I feel like Hullbreaker Horror is there to allude to how to build the deck towards Talion the Kindly Lord- who can lean out of faeries specifically, but more into blue/black control and some fae that also serve that theme
hullbreaker is there to make a combo.. cloud of faeries+solring, infinity mana. if you have the other 2mana dimir faerie, you deal infinity damage from ETB.. you can also combo with snap and other sinergies. picklock prankster can mill/make you draw your entire deck
My answer to "how to play tempo in edh" used to be najeela. Instead of warrior tribal, building it with ramp to get her on the battlefield turn 2 and just keep interacting with me oponents until I had amassed a game winning army
I saw a few people having an issue with this precon where the box contains the thick stock version of the face commander and 2 copies of Alela instead of one of each, which means you can't swap the commanders out of the box. Which sucks, but hopefully this only happened to a small number of precons.
Cloud of Faeries is a tempo card. Play it on your on turn get a flyer - untap two lands you can still play on your opponents turn. If you don't play anything on your opponents turn - cycle the card and draw a card. Would rather have this than a 4 mana anthem with flash. Keeping the mana curve low and efficient.
If you are going to get these cards, get them as soon as possible. The prices on all of the recommendations usually spike hard in about 24 hours, so act fast. Of course don’t spend money you don’t have, but just to let you know.
I have the OG Alela as my Faerie Tribal deck and I’m upgrading it with cards from this set. Cuts will be tough since I really like it, but there are cards that are strictly better upgrades. I have the deck so hopefully I will get to those upgrades soon! Lol
I put cloudstone curio in mine cuz I would champion the counter spell fairy and then when someone else would cast something else on a different turn play another ferry to put it back in my hand to counter spell something else
Better in the Tegwyll version of the deck, which actually wants the sacrifice outlet. Also it's around 10 dollars I think so maybe they left it out since it might not be worth it.
Literally bought the deck tonight, played two games in a casual pod and the second one I copied the two target removal, went to two, then died from tygwyn when I had to block
The just add 1 counterspell statistically isn't enough by itself you need approximately 9 in the deck to make sure you have it when you need it. I think closer to 11 is better but it's a matter of who is the beat down. In a more reactive deck I think 13 sets you up to have those battles on the stack more reliably. In more control oriented decks I've gone as far as 17, but found that much redundancy is really dependent on your play group. Talrand on the other hand maybe 24-26 it just draws so much attention you have to be ready for anything
Also favorable winds is a 2 mana anthem for fliers. (I know it doesn't have flash but it's better than it looks) another gross include is kindred discovery, cast a faerie make a faerie draw 2 cards is so much value.
Nice list. I think you should add Door of Destinies. It is so good on tokens. Faerie Trickery is a nice little counter spell that can be added that also potentially removes the card from the game. Also, what do you think of Narset, Caged Sun, Vedalken Orrey, and Leyline of Anticipation?
i think the leyline is no need caus you already can cast everything on instant speed when you do the upgrade like they did. not sure if thats worth it.
Hi hi! Love the way this deck feels and all at face value, but at who should the commander be, I think Alela, Artful Provocateur is the better choice. Her CMC is still 4, but as an Esper. Plus, when an enchantment or artifact enter the battlefield, create a 1/1 blue faerie creature token. In my Neverland deck, I'm running her with many many board boosting anthems, artifacts and an Enchanted evening to really spice it up. Intangible virtue to ensure the tokens get vigilance and etchings and rankle are the sac outlets. I'm upgrading the deck to host more flash and flair while maintaining the big beefy powerhouse the tokens can become. Love the content though!! Keep it up!
I'm wondering: Does Alela have to play Farie-Tribal? What I like about her the most is that "tempo feeling" but that relies mostly on flash/instant speed, but not on fearies, correct?
Very entertaining. You guys are great! One suggestion - Tablet of the Guilds feels like it would be a nice addition to this deck. There are also other cards, like Siren Stormtamer, that I've previously been hesitant to put in a deck because I didn't want to have to keep mana open to use it on an opponent's turn. But, since the plan of this deck is to play most of your spells on an opponent's turn cards like this become more attractive. Thoughts?
Theoretical Duplication would go much better in a Talion, the Kindly Lord deck. I would love to see someone run a clone based deck with that card as the commander.
VERY glad to see Alela in the driver's seat. Tegwyll is great but I think he's a little boring and I prefer him in the 99, while Alela feels more unique and fun.
Not too unique when a lot of people seem to prefer Alela over Tegwyn. My dumbass is going to try building around either and then just swapping the commander with Talion.
Isn't [Instruments of War] negating the effects of [Skullclamp], since the fearie rogue tokens entering the battlefield automatically becomes 2/2 instead of 1/1 ? Assuming we play both artifacts in the same game, we can't kill our faerie rogues tokens with Skullclamp anymore to draw more cards.
This deck comes with OK ramp and 39 lands, my LGS hosts a precon league where you are allowed to change up to 5 cards in your deck. We've come to the consensus that you always cut 5 lands, having more than 34 lands makes no sense in any precon unless you run landfall. I highly advise anyone watching this guide to cut some lands instead of actual cards.
I relate to Illusionist's Gambit so much. It's such a flavour win in this deck. But yeah, might be kind of too situational. One card I'm surprised wasn't mentioned, Stolen by the Fae. Sure, it isn't an instant, but the amount of 1/1s you get out of it is still nothing to sneeze at, right? I also personally feel like Reflections of Littjara might just be too slow? I'm not sure about that one. I cut it because I felt it might be too slow on top of being kind of too flavour neutral for my tastes. Especially with how small most of the spells you would be doubling are anyway
nightmare unmaking bailed me out the first time i had used my precon because i was 1on1 with a gruul stompy deck and wiped everything with power 5 or greater. Keeping it in
Instruments of War having flash does not excuse its 4cmc. If you must play another anthem in this deck go with Favorable Winds, but I wouldn't recommend adding anthems to this deck, you wont go as wide as you might think, Alela's dream scenario of creating 3 tokens a turn cycle is just that, a dream. Other than that I think the cuts and upgrades look pretty good and I would just note that cards like Cloud of Faeries and Nightveil Sprite get a lot better if you run Tegwyll or especially Obyra as the commander.
Not including bitterblossom by default seems like careless design. Instruments of war is overcosted anthem. Flash isnt worth that. Another cheap card i'd replace a land with is a new instant removal spell "fairy fencing" xblack for -× + -3/-3 if you control a fairy. So potentially black for -3/-3. Pretty good imo with option to pay more to kill something bigger. Gets around indestructible.
I can't remember the name of this card I'm thinking about but it was in the rogue deck from a few years ago. It has flash and is hybrid blue/black with total mana value of 2. It saves your creature spells with flash from being countered. I believe it to be a good include despite it not being a faerie card type. This is assuming the player is on the flash theme with the deck.
Mmm not quite sure rankle could be called a "sac outlet". Also, how many instants / things with flash are in the deck after the upgrade? Is it enough to run Alela?
Just bought this deck. Might I make a spicy recommendation? How about Reins of power? It's budget friendly and can take advantage of other people's creatures to attack if players have more powerful creatures then you or benefits you want to get out of attacking. It is also a great defensive card since you can use other peoples creatures to block for you. And is it possible to build around Marton Stormgald as a commander?
I love the goad on Alela, I think I would still add feywild visitor to the Alela deck, it turns all your non-token faries into token generators. Nymris is a good cEDH commander, just ask Rebell
I'll have to give Feywild Visitor another shot in Alela. I was hesitant because of Alela already being a removal magnet that adding a card that relies on her so much can cause problems for the deck
I’m trying out Death Match with Alela as the commander. It is symmetrical but we should be making so many more creatures than anyone else, and *Alela’s* 4 toughness is huge with it.
Can Anyone tell me why they would keep Midnight Clock in this deck? To me, It feels like 3 mana to cast + 3 mana To put an hour counter on it each time for just 1 mana every turn and a graveyard & hand shuffled into your library is not great. Why not just replace it with something like Cyclonic Rift?
Theres actually 3 to pick from the one I picked was obyra bc she has a cool power she's a 1 black 1 blue 2/2 that says when u summon a fairy each opponent loses 1 life and my deck summons fairy's like crazy
It would be interesting to see what price margin you use to calculate the financial value. Tolarian CC puts this deck in the mid $80 price so I'm wondering if these numbers are inflated a little bit. I buy precons because I like the deck and want to play or upgrade them so the value doesn't really matter to me if I like the deck. It's still nice to know you're getting your money's worth though.
The big reason for the price discrepancy is Kindred Dominance. When they recorded this video, Kindred Dominance likely hadn't gone through its price adjustment from being reprinted in Commander Masters yet. They have it at $22 but you can pick one up at Card Kingdom for 5 bucks.
@damenlenz thanks for the answer! Could you explain why? I know bitterblossom has a Faerie type for the spell but when I read brazen Borrower it was instant - adventure.
@dualcarnage7299 thanks. I was working and just couldn't focus on what thet said. I realized later I mixed it up with another faerie matters card later. Thanks again though.
