This is PART 84 in our series, “Faith Journeys with God in the Land.” In this episode I hike into the 1st century synagogue at Gamla. Located six miles due east of the northern tip of the Sea of Galilee, Gamla was a very Jewish site at the time of Jesus. Although not mentioned in the Gospels by name, there is a high probability that Jesus taught here. The ruins of the rectangular shaped synagogue at this site are quite impressive. There have been seven or eight (depending on how you count them) 1st century synagogues discovered in Israel so far.
What did Jesus teach about at these synagogues? After all, we taught in many synagogues through the Galilee (see Matthew 4 and 9). I have to believe that the message of the kingdom of God was Jesus’ primary “go-to” message. To Jesus as a spiritually-oriented Messiah (vs. politically-oriented one), the kingdom was all about the “reign and rule” of God in one’s life. The message of Jesus recorded in Matthew 5-7 is a good example of Jesus’ kingdom focus.
Jesus’ invitation to us today is to allow the kingdom to reign in each of us. May today be a day when we yield our walk of faith to Him!
