Great reaction. I believe they wrote this song expressing their anger and sadness of Cliff Burton's death. And people please correct me if I'm wrong, the last of the lyrics "Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home?" was written by Cliff.

Yeah you were born in the wrong generation, you'll be surprised the group I hung with in high-school that were metal heads was a mixed group of people...white, black, Asian, Hispanic etc etc etc... we were very diverse when it came to music. Quick thought 💭 What if you were born exactly when you should have and your future will benefit from your courage? Knowing music well requires one to know some of it’s history, IMO? I do not often see that from the recent generations, unfortunately.

I’m particularly found of the instrumental suicide and redemption off of the death magnetic album.

I believe some parts of the song that sound a little different are actually recordings of their bassist cliff burton who tragically died in a tour bus accident. The poem near the end was something he had written. This was the first album they did after he passed away. They credit cliff for making them who they are. He had an educational music background and taught them a lot about putting their stuff together. He was amazing.

a long time ago i had lost inspiration in my guitar playing, couldn't get the spark back so to speak. One day i picked it up again and said to myself...i wonder if i still remember how to play " to live is to die" ? I put this song on and although there were a couple of parts i forgot, i basically played the whole thing again. needless to say i got my spark back, and continued playing again..I will always be thankful for the song because of that

Cliff got killed...by a bus...a fucking bus! The bus veered, slid, then rolled, he flew out of a window, while he was sleeping, he landed outside the bus on the asphalt, then the bus landed on top of him...holy fuck! Still chills me to think of such a random death.

This song hits different than anything else in Metal, it still resonates with such depth and emotion, this was a cathartic moment for the band and fans of Cliff Burton, to this day...it just hits different
