As I’ve been processing what happened here in the USA last week, this song repeatedly came to mind, so I created this arrangement of it over the last few days. While it’s a song in Hebrew that talks about Israel, it describes my feelings now about the USA perfectly, both about not being able to recognize the home country you love, and the resilience and courage to work toward a just future.
The song is called “Ein li eretz acheret (אין לי ארץ אחרת),” the title of which translates to “I have no other country.” The poet is Ehud Manor, and the composer is Corinne Alal. For those who don’t speak Hebrew, I’m including a translation below:
“I have no other country,
although the land is burning.
Just a word in Hebrew [in my native tongue]
penetrates my veins and my soul,
in a hurting body, in a hungry heart.
Here is my home.
I won’t stay silent,
in light of how my country changed her face.
I won’t give up on her,
I’ll remind her,
and sing to her here into her ears,
until she opens her eyes.
I have no other country-
until she restores her days,
until she opens her eyes.”
