yep i am a concreter and my old supervisor was the hardest worker i had ever met, now in his late fiftys he can barely walk or move properly and his favourite saying is back in my day i would have lifted that by myself or i would have done that on my own and the comeback was to always ask him how that worked out for him because none of us wanted to be like that when we got to his age.

It pisses me off when someone try’s to guilt trip another person into “push through the pain.” I had a L2 compression fracture at 18 in 1993. I had two fusions at L1/L2 and hardware installed. In 1995 the hardware was removed because it was tearing through my skin. I started having issues in 2004. I was told I was too young for more fusions and to take pain pills as long as I could. In 2009 I was injured on the job. Tore tendons in my left ankle and smacked the back of my head on a concrete floor. I was refused treatment for a year by work comp because the doctor kept saying nothing was wrong. I’ve now had five surgeries on the tendons (2010, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018) and I’m needing another surgery. Unfortunately the tendons are so deteriorated, I don’t know what can be repaired. The head injury was never treated or accepted by work comp. I now get constant migraines. I had bilateral carpal tunnel surgeries in 2016 because supposedly that’s what was causing the tingling and pins/needles in my fingers. Turns out it was my neck causing the issues, but because it wasn’t looked at after bouncing my head off the floor, no one listened to my complaints of feeling like I was holding onto an electric fence for 6 years. The surgeon butchered my hands and now I have permanent nerve damage in both of them. My neck has bulging discs and pinched nerve roots from C2-C6. I had a herniated and ruptured disc at C6/C7 that was removed, a cage installed, vertebrae fused, and a plate installed in 2021. I was just informed that I’m going to need the rest of my neck fused. My back from L1-L3 are bulging discs and L3-S1 are degenerative discs, so I will need fusions there too. I was told earlier this year that my right hip needs to be replaced too. All because doctors told me to man up and deal with the pain by taking pills. My whole life I was raised to ignore the pain. I can’t do anything about that now, but I try to talk to people who I know are suffering to explain they only have one body, one life, one chance. Don’t screw it up because of ego and pride.
@jdwylde7
@jdwylde7 2 года назад
Working through the pain especially with men is important. But more important is knowing the limit. Because these people telling you to push harder aren’t going to be there to care for you when you’re maimed and can’t walk or do things you used to. Plus we don’t have the same net that a lot of people had back then. Watch out for yourself. Him saying “if you Leave I probably won’t ever hire you again.” That’s probably the first time I ever lost respect for John H.

As a general rule, I don't respond well to ultimatums. And I don't think anyone should. The kid is family, and yet he tells him that if he leaves now he'll never hire him again. Then, he tells him that he loves him. Right. I'm sure. When the job is more important than the health and well-being of your family, you've lost sight of what's important. And I don't care who you are or what financial situation you're in. If I was in that situation, as soon as my "family member" spoke those words I would have immediately cut him off emotionally, left the boat, and moved on with my life with people who cared about me more than the money I could bring back for the "family business."

injuries like this take longer than just 4 weeks to heal. It may be estimated to take that long, but majority always has it lasting longer than specified. If not given the time to heal fully, it could leave him with lasting effects that could possibly stick with him for the rest of his life. For a lot of people, their job is just not worth receiving lasting complications to their health. And whos to say that they would have even allowed him to rest that long? And it wouldn't have even been the captain, the crew would have made his life more hell that it already had been. From what I've seen, the crews of the ships don't always have the same thought process and morals that the Captain's do. While John may be a good man who tries to keep his crew's health in mind, his crew very well would make Philip's time onboard be hell. Especially Freddy. They would have only seen him as a liability, and done their best to get him to either snap and start a fight, or break and leave. Phill may have seen this and decided, combined with the injury, that it just wasn't worth it. His health and wellbeing are more important than the job. And who's to say that it's be the last time he'd be on a boat? Just because John won't hire him doesn't mean another ship won't. Maybe he might pick another job instead of fishing or crabbing.

I myself have complications with my right foot. Im a factory worker, more specifically I work with plastic molds. The problem is that we stand in one place, on hard concrete, for 7 1/2 hours, running machines. 30 minutes for a break. Regardless of the shoes I wore, or what I did to lessen it, the pain was horrible. The soles of my feat burned like I was standing on lava, my ankles feel like someone took a bat to em, and my back was no better. To this day, I can barely stand for more than 1 hour without my back and feet blooming with agony. And if I stand for too long and rest for a while, my right foot causes me pain every time I move it. His choice to be more concerned with his own health and wellbeing is perfectly justified.

I think what's changed is that the younger generation see through this old "work till you die or you're not a man" mentality. I am young myself and am a mechanic, not as demanding as this but still more than an office job. I see lots of guys doing hard work but only a few, often those "look at me I'm so tough" kinda guys actually work through pain. This is germany as well, so you and your boss get paid some kind of money while you're out, maybe that's different up there. But actually all the older boomers that are supposed to be from a "tough" generation tell the young guys to look out for themselves and don't make the same mistakes they made. They're all fucked up in some kind of way and wish they never did hard work when injured. Also your Boss doesn't give two shits about you most of the time. If you work sick or injured he'll be ike "well if he's here it can't be bad" and if you're at home sick he'll say "what a quitter, probably isn't that bad" and if you some day can't work anymore because you fucked yourself up working for him he'll be like "oh no what a shame for you" and the next thought will be "shit now I need to find a new guy". You are so expendable, always. Working yourself to death for some boss is a fools game.

They don’t call working in the Bering sea one of the deadliest professions for no reason. If your not willing to give your all to complete the job, you only tend to bring down the total output of the crew and there’s no reason for you to even be near Alaska. Just my opinion 😤

They weren't going have him out on deck. I've seen the injured guy run the kitchen and pull watch while the others sleep in the past. It really makes a difference to the crew to come in to a hot meal on the table as soon as they are off deck instead of having to start cooking when all they want is sleep.

This is one of the most toxic things about a boss who sees employees as a tool rather than a human being. It's in so many industries that involve physical labor. Don't lower yourself to an object. He made the right choice for himself, and that's all he should care about.

I have mixed feelings about this. Iv always tried to work through pain /injuries but I ripped ligaments and tendons in my wrist this year and was on the bench for 2 months. I felt I had to make that choice cause it was redundant to be at work not at full potential and risky I could have damaged it permanently more so than I have. The guy made the right choice for his health, not so much for the family or the boat, but he did the right thing for him.

@@alaskaguyd963 We can’t really prove the injury or not but packing your bag is different than moving heavy weight for hours on end...I get what your saying though. @@cal-king injuries like this take longer than just 4 weeks to heal.
