I think her brief definition is accurate. Just to expand on it.... men have forever been held to a certain set of expectations. Like being expected to do a minimum level of physical labor. And being relatively disposable. Unless a man is wildly talented and/or uniquely attractive, they are easily replaced. That was always an accepted reality. Over the past 20 years, permissive parents have become more and more tolerant of their kids being unproductive bedblobs. I was a Victim Advocate in my law enforcement agency, responding to S/A calls 24/7. We respond to the scene and we drive the victim to the hospital for the S/A exam, explaining on the way exactly what the exam entails. We always stay with them during the exam if they wish, otherwise we wait just outside the exam room until they are done, as well as during interviews if they wish, and we accompany them to depositions and court appearances/trials. Thank God we don't have the NHS here in the U.S. - what happened to you would never have happened here. If the victim has injuries and the only doctor(s) on duty in the Emergency Room are male, then female nurses are *always* present and the Victim Advocate would also remain with the victim if at all possible. We also are available if after the fact they "just want to talk" and we can also refer them to *good* *helpful* counselling and social service resources. Plus, for any follow-up care (or, really, for any medical appointment of any kind) you make an appointment with the doctor of your choice, no one dictates whom you will be seen by. You call for an appointment, they ask "When would you like to come in?" and you agree on a date & time. That's it.
