I was in Malaysia a few months after the tsunami and my taxi driver in Penang (the worst-hit area) was proud of the fact that Malaysia had rebuilt without foreign aid!
Sheesshh...he wasnt too wrong, though. The damages on Penang was hardly major - maybe one beachfront overflooded & a few fishing boats sunk. While you probably meant well, it was certainly not the scale of infra damages (and human losses) incurred by nearby regions of Aceh or Phuket or even Sri Lanka.

Yeah, when talking about people freezing to death. The difference between normal body temperature and hypothermia is only just over a couple of degrees; 37° and anything under 35°. When someone falls into very cold water, they don’t usually drown. Their body pools all their blood, stopping it going to the extremities, in order to keep their core temperature at or above 35°, increasing blood pressure. To decrease blood pressure, when we’re cold, we urinate. It happens so quickly in cold water, there isn’t time. So, people in very cold water often die of a heart attack due to high blood pressure. Going into hypothermia usually makes you very lethargic; you often just want to close your eyes and sleep. I have been in that position myself. In the home, someone can get so cold that they get the same way. If they can get to the toilet to urinate, and they don’t take enough fluids in, their blood becomes thicker and less able to circulate and carry oxygen. If they can’t get to the toilet, their blood pressure goes up. Particularly in older people, either scenario puts them at more risk of heart attack, stroke, a ruptured aneurism, etc. So while it won’t say on their death certificate that they froze to death, they will have died as a result of the cold. I've had work colleagues adamantly insisting that no one will freeze to death in the UK, in winter. I said no, but many thousands *will* die from cold!

They work less, retire before us and don't have huge mortgages to pay. Land is cheap, fuel is heavily subsidised and taxes are low. Oh, and some of the best food in the world.

We don't need cycle lanes. The cycle lanes near me are almost always completely empty. What we do need is for potholes to be repaired and road markings to be replaced.

British insanity, let's give a big chunk of taxpayer money away every year to rich countries, many of which probably don't even like us, even though we're a very weak economy and our own people are going without basic stuff - e.g. having to use food banks, can't afford heating or homeless, and we have roads full of potholes. As we know, the British always want to be the big brother and one of the conditions for independence in their colonial countries a few centuries ago must be sheltered under the Commonwealth. For example, what was left on the Peninsula after the British left the country? The iron ore has been unloaded. Gold and other precious stones. The broken policy and the British order made the Malays marginalized and poor in the hinterland, instead the workers brought in from China and India dominated the economy in the cities. Malaysia took a long time to recover from this unfair socio-economic situation, instead it was criticized when the government made policies to increase the economic power of the Malays who were sidelined for so long. Malaysia is criticized as a country that oppresses other races even though we can witness, other races are free to practice their native religion and culture in an open economic system. Just because some policies give privileges does not mean that other races cannot carry out their activities as usual, even vernacular schools, temples are also given provisions.
The British during the colonial era have exhausted the produce of Malaysia and brought it to Britain to develop your country, especially after the end of World War 2, the British drained all the contents of the Malaysian soil to rebuild Britain from destruction, don't forget about the greed of your government once upon a time
One thing we need to understand and if it's happening, it the truth. So we send money to India and china, and this gives us leverage over decisions and to have a voice. We do this with our friends, family and kids....and in politics, it happens with countries....whoever gave the cash is the advisor of decision making, and whoever accepted it has to listen for the cash to carry on, it's a bribe for goods and technology and money...
The leads to the big question, is aid really going to these countries or just funding British expats working in British aid agencies in these countries? As Reem pointed out, people rather work in peaceful Malaysia as compared to a war torn country. The so-called "aid" are actually PR and diplomatic tools.
The over seas aid budget needs to be cancelled no ifs or buts. We have enough people in need of help here. Funding all the illegal immigrants is essentially overseas aid.
That is just how diplomatic relation work you give some aid even it is not really needed and in return you also got something. Its about keeping good relation.
