Made by the Bowling Proprietors Association of America in 1955, this promotional film uses a fictional double-date setting at bowling alley to teach correct bowling form. It features professional bowlers Ned Day and Marion Ladewig. (Ladewig was known as the "Queen of Bowling." Many people consider her the greatest female bowler who ever lived. Day was elected to the American Bowling Congress Hall of Fame in 1952.) Men are wearing ties, women long dresses while bowling. Marion / Ned wear BPAA uniforms.
Title sequence (0:06-0:56). Directed by Al Bradish. “[D]edicated to the millions of Americans who have shown, through their selective patronage, that they appreciate outstanding surroundings in which to enjoy their bowling.”
White couples in expensive-looking hats / coats enter building from street (0:56). Closeup: astounded woman (1:20, “Peg”). Peg watches people bowling, shakes her head (1:47). Closeup: men and women picking up bowling balls, bowling (1:54). Closeup: man and boy throw ball together (2:15). Man gives youth bowling lesson (hand position) (2:18). Children bowling / laughing. Closeup: Peg smiles, looks around (2:49). Two white couples pay entrance free, pick up bowling shoes from window (2:54). Couples sit down, put on bowling shoes. Peg expresses doubts, her friends encourage her. Two men, wearing ties, confidently encouraging Peg (3:41). Group leaves, Peg still doubtful. Couples check coats (4:10). Couples pick bowling balls, test fingers / weight (closeup: men, then man helping women choose) (4:21). Man instructs others how to bowl (5:00). Man bowls, hits a few pins, others watch from booth. He bowls again, misses, gestures (exasperated). Woman stands, bowls, spare, shakes hands (exasperated) (5:43). Various attempts; amateur bowlers try to correct each other. Woman bowls (gutter); man consoles woman at booth. New couple approaches front desk, talk to employee (6:48). Couples argue about bowling technique (7:06). Peg shakes head, exasperated. Man attempts to bowl, stumbles, returns to booth (7:21). Empty bowling alley booth with chairs behind (7:40). Couples approach lane in line. Ned Day and Marion Ladewig (in BPAA shirts) await (7:45). Ned / Marion check ball weights, invite couples to sit. Marion speaks. Closeup: Marion’s hands, demonstrating how to correctly pick up ball from return rack / grip. Zoom: three finger grip, “Marion Ladewig” visible, painted nails (8:41). Marion bowls while others watch (focus on body) (9:09). Closeup: Ned Day. Ned picks up ball (hands; his name on it), bowls. Marion leads Peg from booth to rehearse footwork / swing (9:35). Two women practice bowling form. Marion watches Peg practice (10:13). Peg bowls (happy). One man bowls too quickly (shouts, upset) (10:35). Ned shakes head, gestures / speaks (10:42). Man bowls but goes over foul line (closeup: feet). Woman bowls (focus: form / body) (11:06). Hands picking up ball from rack (11:17). Ned / Marion teach couples correct bowling stances (11:32). Closeup: knees / feet / bowling shoes (11:47). Woman bowls without follow-through, snaps fingers (frustrated) (14:49). Marion corrects woman’s form (follow-through) (15:00). View from lane: Ned bowls, follow-through (15:16). Closeup: numbered pins being replaced. BPAA sign. 1-3 strike target (pocket) with ball. View from lane: Marion bowling (15:54). Ball strikes in pocket. Marion instructs hand form (16:06). I worked every part of a bowling center from 1974 through November 1999. I was a "Certified Coach Instructor" which meant that I was certified to teach people to teach bowling. I taught the coaches! It was a LOT like in the video. I also taught bowling at the University of North Dakota. What a great job! My 11 years as an AMF 82-70 Pinspotter Mechanic were great, too. The machines are fascinating.

In North Jersey there was a bowling alley with 112 lanes. It was incredible. 56 lanes on each side with a walkway and the service counter and bar in the middle. It seemed as big as an airplane hangar. We would go on Saturday nights and even if you weren't bowling, just sitting at the bar watching was amazing. And the sound ! 112 ×10 = 1,120 pins crashing. Great fun !

Back in the 50's we would ride our bikes to the local bowling alley. A game was 25 cents. The cost for shoe rental was 25 cents. We asked the person at the counter if it was okay for us to bowl in our socking feet. They said it was okay, so we ponied up 50 cents to play two games. Had to stretch out that weekly allowance. It was great. Many times I'd look up to the billiard room to the right side of the alleys to envision one day to be old enough to shoot pool. 18 was legal age, at the time. And yes. When I reached 18 we would 'rack them up'. Good memories . This was in Burbank, Ca.

. Like a lot of other things these days that once thrived, bowling alleys seem to be one of those fun places that are gradually disappearing from all over the U.S. landscape.......we lost our local alley (Milwaukee suburb) a few years ago, a place that held A LOT of fond memories from numerous visits of mine from childhood on, over the past 50 years, or so, and now, if I were going to make the effort, I'd probably have to drive a half-hour or more to try and find a lane that's still in business.......something that was UNHEARD OF back in the day, when we had MULTIPLE choices (two within WALKING DISTANCE from where I grew up!) of bowling lanes we could go to without having to go very far !! Just one of those things that once it's gone, you just KNOW won't EVER be returning again..... :-( .

It is sad when your local lanes close. We had a very popular bowling alley that had to close due to the Wuhan Virus. They reopened briefly but it just couldn't make it. It's like alot of things that people stop doing for a while. Not enough people came back. Very sad.

A very nice instructional video of how to bowl! Even though this video was from the mid-1950s, it sure is a great instructional video of how to properly bowl at any bowling alley, regardless of what time period the video was taken in, and still applies to modern-day bowlers as well! Again, as always, a great bowling instruction video!

I was taught to shoot all of my spares from the opposite side of the lane. Do they even teach this technique anymore? I won't mention the PWBA professional, but I mentioned this to her, and she thought I didn't make any sense. The idea is to always "maximize" the amount of lane for your ball to roll on, as cross-lane is a foot or two longer than straight, and that extra length gives you more room for error. So if you miss your spot by a board or two, you should still pick up the spare.

Sad the number of league bowlers in the country continue to decline. Property has become too valuable and many lanes are redeveloped since bowling establishments take up such a large area between the building and parking. My local lanes Fountain Bowl closed during the pandemic and was sold to torn down but the new owners decided to reopen for few years to decide. Nice nostalgic video only thing lacking is the smell of smoke from all the bowlers that used to smoke while bowling. I remember going home after league and changing out of my smoky clothes.

@@boristheamerican2938 My buck ninety five an hour I got paid to work at the old rec lanes in the seventies would get me 6 games at 35 cents per line.. that was after the price increase because of oil going up due to the Arab Oil Embargo foisted on us. Today, minimum wage is just under 8 bucks. At five fifty a pop you can't afford two full games at minimum wage.. it IS a whole lot different now. Add to that the fact that most places in the US have lost nearly two thirds of the lanes that were in use back in the 1970's. We used to run double shifts at every house in the county with a few houses also running midnight leagues. Now, the few remaining houses can barely fill a single shift. In spite of what the USBC maintains, the sport has been slowly dying for the last forty plus years. Those of us who really love the sport will keep going until there are no more houses to bowl in.. or.. maybe, just maybe, we've hit rock bottom. Changes to equipment haven't helped. Score inflation is an issue that those who know the game argue about as to whether it was a good or bad thing. Oh well..

All the coaching in the world won’t help me from not throwing a back up ball. Hard to break a 24 year habit.

I stand 1 foot from the pins, and for some unknown reason, I always bowl a perfect game! I guess I'm just a natural.
