The plinth should be used for a statue of Queen Elizabeth II. She was the longest reigning monarch in history, and by all accounts the perfect exemplar of what a modern monarch should be. She deserves a spot in Trafalgar square, not this.

Absolutely absurd and sadly not at all surprising.

It's junk as usual, that plinth was left empty in memory of the individual who designed the square so its an insult .

I am sure the pigeons will make comments on this, the fact of sex workers being abused is not about trans, it is about the problem of women in poor countries been used.

The only artworks on the plinth that I thought were beautiful were Alison Lapper Pregnant and HMS Victory in a bottle.

Silly me but if you wanted a statue commemorating victims of epar (word reversed as if it was the right way round YT tend to remove comments) and sexual violence I could think of something a lot closer to home, but the powers that be don't want to talk about that.

I am rather qualified to talk about this. 'Tis in my name. Artwork, the purpose of which is intended to evoke some incidental feeling, is often claimed by the artist as being intentional when it's purely subjective. It often 'transcends' meaning - meaning it has no meaning, it's just a bloody eye-sore. Artwork should, in my view, be purposeful and not require a PhD in Art History to even begin to analyse the subtext of the installation. Too many times, even with my Degrees, I've gone to installations and some stuffed shirt has dismissively ambled along and said to me stuff like, "You surely agree that the brush strokes evoke a sense of urgency," and all I can think is, "Sure, how tight was the deadline for this mockery of a daubing?" I must say, while I don't agree with physically harming someone else, I can understand why some chemically misaligned men - who actively seek out sex workers - might be a bit surprised when they get back to their room and are met with meat and two veg, or a perfectly slender Adam's Apple. It might, in some, trigger a fear response that is communicated violently. So we have a series of problems here: 1. The unresolved history that derailed the man to seek sex workers in the first place, 2. The search for sex workers, 3. The misrepresentation of oneself to a derailed man, 4. The violent reaction to what is most understandably a frightening reality shift especially when you're dealing with people who have tapped into their basal instincts. Here's a thought: if you are a male prostitute, be a male prostitute. If you're a female prostitute, be a female prostitute. In both cases make sure you're safe, clean, healthy, and have an action plan to get out of that line of 'work' as soon as you can before something horrendous happens to you; and secondly: as the contract between the two is purely visual, don't enter into the negotiation on illegitimate terms. I'd sue the countach off you.

Probably commissioned during the funding boom for these causes, just completed now and needed a place to put it. BUT transgendered individuals are generally not hired for normal jobs and forced into sex work (prostitution) to put food on the table. That's part of the meaning in this art as well. Seems to follow in the tradition of Dickens, the downtrodden, the lowest and I guess Dickens was criticized by the establishment in much the same way, using the same arguments. But it does have wokish wag the dog written all over it... governments and committees afraid to do anything else and looking to avoid backlash. With Starmer's latest flip, we generally don't really know what the motives were of the officials deciding to put this up and if they are at all sincere.
