B/c it’s a distinctly fatherless culture. Real legacy, culture and history is passed down in families around the dinner table and on road trips. Not from watching MTV and BET. Elders aren’t respected b/c the concept of being “fathered” is lacking in the culture tremendously.

Later that night, someone introduced them to him and they were nice and tried to shake his hand. It’s a two-edged sword. The younger generation don’t feel respected by their elders and is often told they have to earn that respect. Meanwhile, the elders expect that respect because they’ve laid the foundation. That much is true, but it’s hard to respect a person that shows you no regard, even if they made it possible for you to do what you do. For example, a teacher has gone through years of schooling, countless hours of studying to become a professor. They deliver the educational material to their class in a certain way. In what is viewed by their colleagues as one of the best ways to deliver the material. Still, if this professor spends a large chunk of their time criticizing and ostracizing former students who are now teachers, for finding a different way to deliver the material to a new generation, even if it’s not the exact way it was taught to them by said instructor, there will be no acknowledgement of the original instructor as the new instructor will feel undermined and slighted. But if that original professor shows respect for that former student’s ability to adapt the material and still make it work for them (not necessarily having to like or agree with the method rather than accepting and respecting that it’s just a different method), it would make it easier for the former student to reach out to the original professor to build. Instead, the original professor calls the former student’s teaching method trash.

Money isn’t the issue. I think it’s the fact that the youth don’t respect the history or the culture of Hip Hop. The issue has been about the material being put out by the youth. It’s been seen as lazy, dumbed down, and without substantial content plus it all sounds the same. My personal gripe with it is similar in that how can these young bucks call themselves artist and they all look and sound exactly the same. In Hip Hop , the goal is to outshine the competition when your own the mic and staying true to yourself and your art form. It’s hard to do this if your copying what another artist do which is something mumble rap does a lot.

Here's one more reason: Hip-Hop changes dramatically every decade or so, while genres of those "revered old artists" mostly stay the same, this makes their careers last a lot longer while in Rap it's very hard to stay on top if your wave is no longer what's popin, unless the artist is willing to keep changing and ridding all the new waves but it's usually goofy to see a 55yr rapping the way 17yr rap... 🤷‍♂
@TollFree999
@TollFree999 Год назад
Rap has been around long enough to have an audience old enough to support the older artists. But older rap fans only buy their favorite artists older stuff. I see it all the time when someone like Meth drops an album but no one in that age group I know actually supported the project even when it's solid. So then they have to rely on the younger fans supporting them which doesn't work as well, since they'd understandably rather support someone in their age bracket first.
@sgtslaughter573
@sgtslaughter573 Год назад
@@TollFree999 this is what y'all don't understand these older folks you speak of don't buy cds or pay to stream music and give their hard earned money to people who already rich 😂 things always change it's still the same game most older artists stuck in the past you literally can blow up off RU-vid the younger generation are the sheep who artists should always focus and prey on to have success being salty at the younger artists not gonna help you in no way you Collab and capitalize put your feelings aside its all business at the end of day
@D-One
@D-One Год назад
@@TollFree999 I also sort of see that around my circle, i'd say it's 50/50, half of the ogs still listen to new stuff from guys like meth the other half only listen to the old joints... Tie that to the fact that back when Meth was popping the amount of people listening to hip-hop was tiny compared to now, that also plays a part because like you said new fans tend to relate more to their age bracket with a few expectations like Jay-Z, J Cole, etc... It's really a lot of factors that contribute to OG's not having the deserved attention and let's face it, many of them lost also lost that youthfull hunger and fell off.

Going as far as having to look deep inside myself and contemplate whether I'm just being racist and trapped by early childhood nostalgia is the only reason I like 90s/00s hip hop so much I eventually came to the conclusion that Rap is more white than it has ever been in terms of artists and Fans (so my hate is probably not related to being white) and that I'm extremely hopeful for these new guys coming up like J.I.D, Griselda, Dax etc. So I've become more comfortable in my dislike of practically anything 2010s style .

There could be many reasons for hate and bitterness from the OG's. It's hard to quantify a single reason for it as it's individual bias's at play. But as a general what might be reason could be, the way they were raised by how harsh the street's were. How hard it was to make it, how hard it was to trust people, and dealing with rivalry. And that rivalry mindset hasn't left um. Dog each dog.

I always say to my fellow OG hip hop heads - Stop f**king hating the young'uns. IT'S THEIR TIME. These artists are for them. If they are messing up - tell them in a way that they understand. If they are doing well, commend them publicly. Create bridges so you can build with them. You don't have to like their music, but understand that it's THEIR art. So sick of seeing jaded guys being dismissive of everything, especially knowing what we went through to get this artform recognized on a global scale. Also, the same people complaining, are the same ones who won't buy the latest work of an OG artist.

For real, the new generation has got their time to shine because the generation before them was shitted on by older artists.So,you learn from that.If your music is good then your music is good.If I can't identify with the new artists then I won't try to do it just because.I came from a time where everyone was almost good,but it's not like that anymore but that's the business,things change just it changed before.So,we can't be mad at the new generation because our generation been there where the old timers were trying to fight the newcomers for a spot and it didn't work either.As long as we control our music and never forget where it came from that's what matters.

That’s a double edge sword. The youth (primarily mumble rappers) have been very dismissive of true Hip Hop and it’s history. The don’t know and they don’t want to know. As an older cat, I find that crazy! How can you call yourself an artist and not know anything about the history of the subject you’re involved in? How can you not respect it’s historical origins or it’s greats? That’s sad bro. As far as the older cats, we’re only asking that they put better effort into their work. Nothing wrong with that. If it’s their time to take the reigns, then at least invest in the culture instead putting out garbage.

@@obsidyan2000 It’s only in rap that you see this and sad to say, it’s our own black people. I’m a high school teacher and I can tell you first hand that the youth, especially without a proper upbringing, can be very disrespectful towards their elders, even more so today than when I was coming along. They can get defensive really quick and judging by these comments, they have closed ears and closed minds. “Old heads”, “Old man in a barber shop” Old man screaming at the clouds” “F you old ass nigga” I see the comments and that’s some disrespectful shit! Sure we were a bit hard headed when we were young but I don’t recall us ever being as disrespectful to our elders. This internet generation is outta control. If they can’t respect their elders, how can they respects Hip Hops culture and history? You would’ve never heard Stevie Wonder or Micheal Jackson disrespecting Aretha, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye or James Brown. That unfathomable! Oh the backlash would’ve been swift and prolly would’ve destroyed their careers if they pulled the same stunt that todays young bucks are doing to the legends. The other problem is, and it may sound disrespectful but it’s not, most of the mumble rappers grew up in the south ( I grew up down here too but I had an open mind when it came to other regions of Hip Hop)…..However, the majority of them don’t know or never heard of the the many legends that have come out of Hip Hip…only ones the know are Jay, Nas, Bigge & PAC. And that’s it. And even then they don’t care about them either. I don’t know bro…outside of rap music, this generation of youth is just wayyyyy different. It’s going to take more than just music to reach them.
