Hear the Maraants trumpets* (marano) Apparently, it doesn't refer to the spanish but to the Jewish who were forced to convert to Catholicism, and it was a negative term for those peoples. The international translations of this song got it wrong in this regard. At least from what i read.
@@kalmonsalmon1946 Not even close , Maraens , Means Pig , Filthy a racial slur for the spannish troops , simular to spek /spekken , ( hams . Bacon ) . Nothing jewish about this word , not even remotely close. I suggest to learn some middle dutch and history , of that era . Its guite insulting and disgusting you want to put a jewish reference in a conflict they where not part of . Or falsifying history . with out even knowing the history of the word or conflict .

I found the next phrase; "Het woord "Maraen" in de eerste strofe was een scheldwoord voor een Spanjaard. So it's not as i stated originally, but more of an indirect insult. Also, before you accuse someone of being "disgusting", please consider that some people on the internet aren't interested in beef, but historical context and debate 🙂

Period , history is none debatable . and 80 years of war thousands tens even hundreds of thousands being killed murdered over it claiming its referenced to the jews is even more despicable . As they had absolutely no place in this conflict .

I have known this song since I was 14 years old, although I live in Russia and have never been to the Netherlands, but I want to convey the feeling of this music: A tall cathedral, spacious, simple Protestant Gothic, and on the street outside a small Dutch town in the Renaissance style 16 -17th century, beautiful fields, the sun is shining, a fresh wind is blowing, the grass is rustling, I feel the spirit of freedom, development, progress and hope, as well as patriotism and love for it all
That last part is also a perfect description of Ukraine. The first part, because you read about it in a schoolbook about Peter the Great, who saw all that in Holland.

@depressedutchman It was the right flag of the Republic of the Netherlands, around 1800s they made red white and blue, but was Orange white and blue in the past, and still part of Dutch history
@@timvlaar You're dead wrong. The original Patriots faught Willem V van Oranje. You are not talking about patriotten, you are talking about geuzen who wrote this song and faught WITH Willem Van Oranje against the Spanish. There is NOTHING about this song or this flag that relates to Patriotten.
@@endthisnonsense7202 We might not refer to them as 'the patriots', but they were patriotic. The title only says 'Dutch Patriotic Song'. That isn't wrong.
@@timvlaar Partiotic is a word derived form the "partiotten" you can LIKE what the geuzen stood for, but you CAN'T call it "patriotic" as they did exactly the opposite of what the patriotten did (fighting FOR Oranje instead of against), so the word derived of "patriotten" simply is a faulty classification. In reality geuzen=anti-patriotic.
