Inflation is no joke. It can eat away at your savings faster than you can say "social security." A well-planned portfolio is your best defense against having to dust off your resume in your golden years.

It's part of the deception. To lie about what the American dream was and/or is. "You don't want to own a home. It's a liability." "You don't want to retire. You want to work until you die. People die when they retire because they don't have a purpose. Keep working." Meanwhile, they say it's your fault for not saving and investing. It's your fault for not getting out of debt. But listen closer and you'll hear them complain that minimum wage is too high. "A $15 an hour for minimum wage is ridiculous. Get a second and third job, you bum." You'll hear them take the side of big corporations fleecing their workers. You'll hear them criticize unions. You'll hear them sneer at the idea of a livable wage. You'll hear them constantly applaud paying workers s@#$ wages. Once you realize what side they are on, you know it's all a big con.

My late mom always said she'll die at her desk, and she almost did it. She was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma at 63 but after taking a year off while she received treatments only because she had a very active and responsible job her Doctor advised her too take it easy. She drove us crazy because she was like the Energiser Bunny on Steroids! She went through 2 subsequent treatments four and a half years after the previous treatments but still kept on working. In 2020 she was forced too stop working due to Covid at 79 and 2 months later she was diagnosed with Leukaemia. She couldn't get the necessary treatment in time because of the international logistics crunch, and subsequently passed away in March 2021. She still had a shower the morning before she passed away during the night. She was my best friend, my role model, financial adviser, greatest parent and she loved all her children equally. I still miss her dearly and for a lady who smoked constantly from the age 19, she was a tuff one who really never took a sick day until she had too stop because her treatment was just that bit more than what she could do.

Just give me all the money I paid into SS the last 50 years -- with interest -- instead of the monthly dribble and I'll do fine. Absurd. The number is $11,000+ more needed per year to pay for inflation, which happens to be a couple hundred over my entire income. My buying power would double without it and it's been tough BUT have nothing but basics; old vehicle, etc. and nothing with payments but insurance, etc. AND lucky enough to land on a remote farm that, go figure, produces food if you put in the effort. Yet everything is more expensive due to remoteness so add 20%. There's enough maintenance work to justify an absurd $300 rent per month (technically I work a PT job as part of it but hey, I get any results and would do it anyway) but point is that's a fraction of most other rents and nothing to a mortgage. No medical bills or issues but any extra unseen expense is like a torpedo strike. I still barely limp through each month. I grieve for those ... most ... who have Real LIfe expenses at double the burden. The GMC breaks down, I'm toast (or riding in for supplies with neighbor ranchers). All this while our citizens are ignored, homeless, drowning from the corrupt thievery. Billions shoveled against our will to Ukraine. Invaders given debit cards, phones and everything else. They didn't mismanage their money the money that was left over went to pay their mortgage buy food and pay for transportation to and from work. Is it their fault that this government mismanaged the social security and stoled money to pay for their secret projects. Even now social security is being robbed for illegal aliens to live better than most people that have lived in this country and paid their taxes for 50 to 60 years. Easy for someone to point out people mismanaging their money that make money they can blow on whatever. A lot of folks have health issues when they get older. Even standing for 8 hours is not possible for many. People's backs deteriorate over time. It is easy for a 45 year old like PBD to say that he likes it when older folks have to work. Social Security is not welfare. We had our money taken from us by force [by the Government] all our lives and we receive a paltry amount back. If we had been 'allowed' to keep our money and invest our social security payments, most retired Americans would be millionaires and not need Social Security payments at all. Since they did take it, it is only right to pay us back. (NB - If we had been able to keep and invest the money we would not only have the monthly interest or dividend payment, but we would also own the principal too). Hopefully PBD will remain healthy (though his smoking argues against that), but in the event that he suffers any health issues, perhaps he will reevaluate his comment about 70 year old retirees having to go back to work (which he sees at his relatively 'young age' as a good thing). When people are in pain or suffering from a recurring health issues, working at any job becomes very difficult if not impossible.

I am 64 1/2 years old I will be 65 in November. If I retire in the spring of 2026 at the age of 66 1/2 I will have a Social Security of $2500 per month and a pension of $4400 per month, my state does not tax Social Security and will not tax my pension up to the amount of Social Security meaning partial taxation by the state. I have some unique needs and therefore I may not retire. I might continue on in my current job or take a part-time job to pick up another couple thousand a month.it’s real and the sooner you realize that the better off you will be. I never saved anything because I didn’t think I would live long enough due to a physical disability.

Both my parents worked hard, saved and invested their entire life. No holidays, no new anything, always fix and make do. They both died before retirement. The only people that benefited was the government. Don't be the richest corpse in the graveyard, live a little.

I am 60 years old and I just bought a new house. I moved because the neighborhood was starting to become a slum, it was $77K from being paid off. The house sold, its proceeds plus $15K was put towards a new down payment. The house was financed at $237K. I went from a payment of $790-3.5% a month to $1900-7.5%. I work at the VA, (have TSP and IRA, no credit card debt, car pd off, following Dave Ramsey) and I now work at Merry Maids, too. When I was interviewed, I was asked, "Why do you want to work here"? I replied, "Side hustle". I'm killing my second job, clients are happy, 5 star reviews, and the owner is very happy.

That's pretty pompous. My last 20 yrs was taking care of my disabled husband WHILE working 48 to 60 hrs a week. I NEVER went to sporting events or concerts. Yes, I invested in 401k. Never had a 'new' car. I have great kids who have a place for me. I contribute by watching my grandkids.

Everything in life are is more expensive than ever. Internet options, cell phone bills, insurances, housing, interest rates, cars, groceries, fast food….No one can say inflation and corporate greed is not an issue. I’m very cautious with my money with a family to support. 5 years ago I was saving about 2000 a month. I have been promoted making more than ever before, changed no spending habits and barely save a dime.

Lockdowns, BLM, DEI, and open borders have ended my career as a chef. If I could even FIND a job, I'm too male and too pale for anyone to to take a chance getting boycotted for being RACIST for hiring me over any black or brown person, who may also apply for the same job. Toronto, Canada.

I'm 57. I broke my back in 2014. I crushed my L1. I have preexisting scoliosis, so no surgery for me. I work full time and I also have a part-time job. I will never be able to retire. I thought it was supposed to get easier. It's ok. I'm letting God figure this one out. 😊

If the government had invested our social security in mutual funds from its inception, the average SS payment that is 1500 a month today, would have been 18k!! Let that sink in

There is now a cumulative effect of inflation. Everything has gone up, not just one or two things. All the bills, groceries, etc. When you have just a little extra each month and now you are spending everything that comes in for less than before... it begins to add up. Then something breaks.

You guys are all out of your collective minds - my wife and I worked for over 40 years and saved and did without so we could stack cash for retirement. We are both 70. Now thanks to inflation and government programs (CA taxes) my working wife and myself barely get by. I hope all of you get a taste of your smarmy advice in the future because it is not by choice to be retired now with few options for increasing cash flow.

It’s not only inflation, it’s the kids living at home. When I was 18 I immediately got an apartment and worked 2 jobs to get my butt out of the house-don’t tell me things were cheaper-we had a very low min wage . I worked 2 jobs and still helped my mom out. I didn’t wait until I was 26 to get my own insurance, I didn’t feel I was owed a nice place, DoorDash and internet w a 1000$ phone in my pocket. I ate 25 cent Mac and cheese and peanut butter sandwiches. These kids are a drain on their parents. Let the older people live for g sake. You can work 2 jobs for a while when you’re young, many did.

Compare college tuition costs in your day and today. There is no comparison. In addition, your minimum wage still had higher purchasing power than the minimum wage today. Stop bragging and being in denial and realize the younger generations in the United States are worse off.
