Sir Keir Starmer has officially handed over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, ending British ownership of the territory, which dates back to 1814. The UK government claims this deal will enhance global security by resolving a long-standing dispute.
The Chagos Islands include Diego Garcia, which is home to a significant US-UK military base. In a joint statement, Prime Minister Starmer and Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth confirmed that Mauritius is now recognised as the sovereign authority over the Chagos Archipelago, including Diego Garcia.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that the agreement ensures the continued operation of the military base, which was previously threatened by legal challenges and disputes over sovereignty.

The role of Phillipe Stands should be under greater scrutiny on this as well. Stands is acting for Mauritius and is also one of Starmer’s best friends. Apparently the UK will be giving Mauritius and undisclosed amount of money annually to help with this ‘handover’, I would recommend his bank account be checked with a magnifying glass for many years to come

Technically they belong to Mauritius because when under France the archipelago was administered from Mauritius, when Mauritius was ceeded to Britain the archipelago was ceeded along with it. When Mauritius gained independence in 1968, Britain then separated the archipelago.

In 1965 the UK bought the Chagos Islands from Mauritius for £3,000,000 (three million pounds) via the Lancaster House agreement. Mauritius itself became fully independent from the UK in 1968 (without the Chagos Islands), but in the 1980's the Mauritian government claimed that it had been forced to sell the Chagos islands under duress and claimed that the transfer was illegal under international law (no doubt after they'd spent the three million quid) and began campaigning through the UN to have the Chagos Islands returned. So now the Chagos are no doubt going to be returned to Mauritius will the UK have the present day value of the Chagos Islands refunded to the treasury by Mauritius? not a chance, because not one UK politician has the backbone to speak out and defend the interests of the UK.
