DEPARTURE: American 1473, Departure, radar contact, climb and maintain FL210.
AAL1473: Climbing 210, American 1473.
DEPARTURE: American 1473, Tower just called and says that … It appears that there is a bend or something coming off of your right wing. And they don't know if it's smoke or mist. Something appears to be coming out of your right wing.
AAL1473: American 1473, okay. Check.
DEPARTURE: American 1473, just let me know if you’d like an intermediate altitude and vectors for your investigation there.
AAL1473: I guess we'll plan on coming back and have things checked out if that's what they saw.
DEPARTURE: American 1473, roger, do you need any time to burn off any fuel or you’re ready to come back in right now.
AAL1473: Yeah, we’re heavy, we’re gonna have to burn some fuel. Stand-by, let’s… We’re discussing this here.
DEPARTURE: American 1473, just give me an altitude whenever you can level off, at 11000 or 12000, just maintain… maintain 12000.
AAL1473: Alright, we’ll maintain 12000, American 1473.
DEPARTURE: American 1473, turn right heading 250.
AAL1473: Right heading 250, American 1473.
AAL1473: Departure, American 1473, yeah, we'll just kind of stay here and we'll just keep it slow and just stay within the vicinity as we’re talking to, trying to reach dispatch and coordinate this. And we’ll let you know the details here.
DEPARTURE: Thanks.
AAL1473: Thank you.
COMMENTS: It seems that controller asked about fuel and souls on board. It wasn’t recorded.
DEPARTURE: Souls 113 and 5 hours of fuel, for American 1473.
AAL1473: Thank you very much.
DEPARTURE: American 1473, turn right heading 350.
DEPARTURE: American 1473, turn right heading 350.
DEPARTURE: American 1473, turn right heading 350.
AAL1473: Right turn heading 350, American 1473, just to give you an update, we're just talking to dispatch. I think they're trying to call you guys ... or call the tower, excuse me.
DEPARTURE: American 1473, okay, thanks.
DEPARTURE: American 1473, turn right heading 080.
AAL1473: Right turn 080, American 1473.
DEPARTURE: American 1473, Approach.
AAL1473: Yes, sir, go ahead.
DEPARTURE: I was just told to ask, did you get the message from your dispatch of your company pilot that departed behind you, their report?
AAL1473: Yes, we’re planning right now, we’re gonna return but we need a little bit of time to get ready.

THE VALUE OF THIS VIDEO:
THE MAIN VALUE IS EDUCATION. This reconstruction will be useful for actual or future air traffic controllers and pilots, people who plan to connect life with aviation, who like aviation. With help of this video reconstruction you’ll learn how to use radiotelephony rules, Aviation English language and general English language (for people whose native language is not English) in situation in flight, which was shown. THE MAIN REASON I DO THIS IS TO HELP PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND EVERY EMERGENCY SITUATION, EVERY WORD AND EVERY MOVE OF AIRCRAFT.
SOURCES OF MATERIAL, LICENSES AND PERMISSIONS:
Source of communications - www.liveatc.net/ (I have a permission (Letter) for commercial use of radio communications from LiveATC.net).
Map, aerial pictures (License (ODbL) ©OpenStreetMap -www.openstreet...) Permission for commercial use, royalty-free use.
Radar screen (In new versions of videos) - Made by author.
Text version of communication - Made by Author.
Video editing - Made by author.
HOW I DO VIDEOS:
1) I monitor media, airspace, looking for any non-standard, emergency and interesting situation.
2) I find communications of ATC unit for the period of time I need.
3) I take only phrases between air traffic controller and selected flight.
4) I find a flight path of selected aircraft.
5) I make an animation (early couple of videos don’t have animation) of flight path and aircraft, where the aircraft goes on his route.
6) When I edit video I put phrases of communications to specific points in video (in tandem with animation).
7) Together with my comments (voice and text) I edit and make a reconstruction of emergency, non-standard and interesting situation in flight.

I know this format takes longer than others channels who have only text on their screen. I do appreciate the time taken for the wonderful visuals. Thanks for sharing!

Nice and professional throughout; a model case. Even to the point of re-confirming clearance (I guess they were busier than normal; "Are we cleared to land?", "I think so, can't remember now you ask, better check again").

Sounds like an overflowing fuel tank to me. Pretty common actually to see this (for a short moment) on takeoff.

I always hate these type of problems. Nothing definite. I was probably fuel venting from the tank. Another example is I think I smell smoke in the cabin. You go back and check and wonder if you smell smoke or it might be the ovens in the galley. Typically if you can not verify you continue and monitor.

The r wing tank may have been overfilled or the aircraft was filled during the cold night and the fuel expanded while sitting in the hot sun and went into the vent system. Or, an underwing fuel tank access panel was improperly installed or has a leak the the mesh seal. Or, it in an engine pylon where it could be a leak which is a more critical area obviously. So they definitely needed to return to base. If it was smoke I could see that coming from an oil leak (fire) on the engine but nothing on the wing tank. It would be important to note the color of the smoke must as black would indicate fuel fire and brown oil leak or oil fire, greyish white fuel misting.

@@tmayorca8770 not questioning the pilot, but the fire trucks did not see anything. I would be curious if anything was found by maintenance. I have had a similar situations and the First Officer went back in the cabin to observe and found nothing. Monitored the fuel gauges for a imbalance, indicating a leak, nothing. Nothing indicating a fire. Continued to destination. Found nothing after walk around at destination. If fuel remaining was 5 hours remaining I would think it was possibly the venting of fuel. Not questioning the pilot and his decision and welcome inputs from the tower when something they think does not look right. I had a flight attendant call me that she saw a fire ball shooting from the back of the engine. I told here we have had a engine failure and we will get back with her. Just saying that some decisions are easy to make, while others are more difficult.

@@MrWoowootila The vent tank is small so it would vent for a few minutes so if it continued there'd be a problem or if the fuel or mist was coming from the engine bay or pylon that'd be a bigger problem. On some of the smaller aircraft there's the over wing fuel cap. If it's installed incorrectly it could leak and that'd be an emergency if it came loose since the fuel would get sucked out in no time and there would be a huge weight imbalance. On the larger aircraft the pressure fueling station under the leading edge wing is not much of a problem if that were to leak since there's a shutoff valve in line but still it would need to be remedied. They are mostly located on the right wing.

@@tmayorca8770 there is fire detection in the pylon and the engine on the a320 so if there was a fire it would of been detected. Simply looking at the wing while inflight could detect detect a major leak or fire. Fuel imbalance is another indication if there is a major leak. Also the guy in the tower could of been a 1/2 to a mile away if he spotted something. I could have been venting of fuel or simply a contrail. A aerodynamic contrail being mistaken for smoke or a leak is actually common. A pilot looking at the wing from the cabin would be a better vantage point. During the preflight a seal from improper installation would have been spotted. Ever if there was a small leak there are tolerances by counting drips in different locations on the wing. Typically access panels on fuel tanks do not just blow out in flight. If it was a major leak looking at the fuel gauge will indicate a major leak and likely spotted from the cabin. It sounds like your from the maintenance background I am from both. Maintenance on general aviation in my youth, airline captain now. I have had this situation happen in my career a few times and the tower was most likely spotting fuel venting or a contrail. The number of times a flight attendant smelling something burning in the galley is several times a year. Can one of the pilots verify the smell? No. Is there any visual indications of smoke? No. Tripped circuit breakers? No. Monitor and continue to destination. I have had a engine fire indication on one part of the fire detection system and not on another. Should not happen but we returned for landing and it ended up being a bad relay. Just saying that I hate these scenarios of people thinking they spotted something when everything is indicating normal. Definitely appreciate and encourage the input of something that does not look right. I am curious if they found anything wrong with the aircraft.

Does AA have a maintenance base in Ixtapa? That's not the regularly scheduled daily flight plan for that number and it looks like AA doesn't serve Ixtapa based on trying to make a dummy booking on AA.com from PHX..... but it's not maintenance because the plan went back into service in the states the day after this, flying PHX-MEX-PHX-SAN. AA1473 is a daily run DFW-LGA-DFW so not sure what was up with that flight to begin with.
