Yup, since it's a before the pass penalty, you can never know how the route would have played out and how close they would have been. Even if you didn't throw it to him, it would still be holding, possibly preventing him from being a viable target. It's weird how commentators just don't care about the rules because of "entertainment", sad.
I get that Mahomes is supposed to be the next Brady, I just wish they would not make it it such a close game to not let them play. That was not a hold that stopped him and anyone who has played football knows that and this includes the refs. Since you can not "tell" in real-time, this is why there needs to be a ref in the booth to make the call to pick up the flag. A penalty that effectively kills the remainder of the game needs to be so egregious that no reasonable and rational fan objects. 50 years as a fan and did not care who won the game and it pissed me off.
Not true. The difference is if the ball has left the QB hand. Just like illegal contact. If it’s before the pass it’s illegal contact. While the ball is in the air is PI
Eagles played a really good game, fantastic even-- they're a well rounded team and it was electric watching KC and Philly go head to head. Worthy of a SuperBowl game for sure.
Respect bruh. I feel bad for you guys as a Chiefs fan. Hurts is amazing! He proved he’s a top 3 QB in the NFL behind Mahomes & Burrow. This game proved Hurts is better than Josh Allen. You guys will be back though. Keep your head up!
Rich acknowledges that it was a hold, but he'd rather the ref not make the right call so he can be more entertained by the ending? This seems to be a pattern with Mahommes for some reason. When the rules produces an outcome that he wins, it's something wrong with the rules (i.e. the Buffalo overtime game 2 years ago), but when the rules produces an outcome that he loses, the other quarterback/team was better (i.e. defensive neutral zone infraction in the AFC championship against the Patriots).
I think it's cause seeing Mahomes lose gives the NFL mainstream media something to talk about other than "look at Mahomes lead the Chiefs to victory again" x12 a season (minimum)! Which is odd since they had no problems bobbing for Brady's knob or declaring the Cowboys as potential SB favorites for 2 decades
No matter who it was u dnt make THAT call at THAT point in the game in the SB with the whole thing on the line-unless the guy dam near tackles Ju-Ju u cant call that man, and that goes for any player any team any sport. Let the guys play man its the SB no one wants to see the game decided on a call that has been “let go “plenty of times before…..dnt get me wrong, KC deserved the win they made the adjustments we couldnt get pressure the game was close-but they did it. Congrats-but that call smh🤦🏾♂️
Eagles fan here. Congratulations to the Chiefs y’all did what we couldn’t in the second half and you beat us flag or no flag the birds couldn’t get it done. I’m heartbroken but better to swallow my pride than stay bitter like other teams in the NFC I won’t call out names😂
@@matthewlane1343 So there are penalties you call at some specific times of the Game, right? If we go by that, every defensive player will hold and interfere in the final minutes of games. Also, I never heard the "let them play" after the missed pass interference in the saints-rams game.
So.... when a Dee Ford offsides penalty in the last 1 minute of the AFC Championship literally cost the Chiefs a trip to the Super Bowl I shouldn't have been mad at Dee Ford, I should have been mad at the refs because they're not supposed to call penalties at the end of big games. Good to know.
No KC fan over stating. It's don't call ticky tak penalties you have been letting slide all game in the final 2 min. That jersey hold was done by both teams through out the game...I blame the slippery grass more for them auto reaching out...but yea blatant calls like the offside should be called.
@@tharengore7215 You're making gross assumptions that they were "letting them slide" when the reality was almost 100% that they just didn't see them . 95% of the time a ref sees that jersey get stretched that call it
If a o-lineman was called for holding they’d admit to it too because it happens all the time and isn’t called because it’s a nothing burger. The refs just iced the game over a ticky tak play.
Lol instead of the conversation being about the great game it’s about a flag at the end of the game that could’ve been throwing for the previous 58 minutes. Consistency is the problem.
Man talk about how the eagles left the chiefs wide open for 2 touchdowns with them just being able to walk in….as the bengals coach said 1 play does not make a game. The eagles let mahomes run for 20 some odd yards and not do anything to stop him
And the chiefs couldn’t stop the eagles either, but the refs helped them out by reversing Devontas catch after allowing Andy to challenge that play because of the first time in history they threw a flag for “not allowing the defense to make substitutions” and calling the worst flag in nfl history clinching the win for the chiefs
@@robertodonnell8396 The refs also reversed a clear catch and fumble that would’ve put the Chiefs up earlier. But you ain’t saying about that. Edit: As someone else was kind enough to point out below, planting your feet counts as two steps. The rule is two feet down and control, not three feet. And turning your body is a football move. It doesn’t say football “step”.
@@Doatello1991 sure catch is a bit of a stretch. The only problem with instant replay tends to slow these situations down when its happening so quickly in real time. The call could have gone either way.
We not gonna talk about the part the Eagles didn’t stop the Chiefs once in the 2nd half before that flag? This historic pas rush and #1 pass defense the Eagles had? But yeah let’s blame 1 call at the end
Are we not going to talk about the Eagles did the same thing in the 1st half? And should have been down more without that gift of a fumble returned for a TD.
@@ZatchBolski not a fan of either team so I really dont care either way but good thing football games are decided in the 2nd half instead of the 1st half huh? Lol the team that plays the better 2nd half usually wins 90% of the time. Blaming refs is about as bush league as it gets.
@@robmchenry9847 he refs were so out to get you!!! Totally not fair to you. You know what, lets just replay the game because you guys got so screwed over and thats just not nice. How dare the refs do that to you?!!? Who do they think they are? Lets just have the players call their own fouls in the replayed Super Bowl game!!!
so if a defender lines up offsides by a foot or so late in the game.....the refs shouldn't throw the flag? If that is true...then the Chiefs would have gone to the Super Bowl the first year Mahomes was QB instead of the Patriots, and Chiefs would have steam rolled that Rams team
People are pulling strawmans left and right in these comments. People say this hold shouldn’t have been called because it’s ticky tak bs, and y’all throw out blatant penalties like well if those were called so should this. It’s not a pass interference like the rams vs saints that wasn’t called, this isn’t a lining up wayyyy offside like in the chiefs vs pats, it’s a ticky tak play that happens almost every play and they decided to ice the game with it. How about comparing it with something like a hand brushing a qbs face mask and it being called roughing the passer, that shouldn’t be called either. Y’all acting like it’s the nba or something.
It would have been worse if they didnt call it 😂😂😂😂😂 quite literally the dumbest take anyone could ever have. If they didn’t call that a hold no one would know that it was a hold and no one would be talking about it. “A penalty is a penalty” also is stupid. Maybe if we’re talking about an offsides or a false start, not defensive holding. Defensive holding can be called every single play if a penalty is a penalty
That's not really the point. The point is they refused to flag multiple holds the entire game until it mattered. That is what is left to discuss. Refs need to be more consistent.
All the upset fans say this, but yet not one has shown another example of a D Holding not called. There was a pass interference not called in the first half, that went against the Chiefs though.
@@igglesjawn3975 There is a picture of Bradberry, with a fist full of jersey and the jersey pulled away from Ju Ju's body all over Twitter. You can't do that, or it's going to get called unless a ref doesn't see it. Which is possible sometimes, due to Angles. In this case, the Ref saw it.
Rich says he saw it was a hold, the whole stadium saw a "fistful of jersey being held", the refs say it's a hold, the damn defender says he held, and yet you want it to be no flags ? You complain that the flag is unfair to the viewers getting robbed of an epic ending, but how is no flag fair to the players ?
Exactly, the ending was anticlimactic because the eagles didn’t get the ball back, but that’s the defender’s fault, not the refs. Shitty for entertainment but the right call
@@uraigroves7898 Well they also mentioned that there was a bunch of please pick could have been called with a flag so if you ignored the others why call this one at the most crucial part of the game??... If you're going to call it call it all game not just at the end
The game was tied Chiefs already in field goal range. Flag people do not seem to understand was going to be 38-35 Please … so many picked eagles now they cry it is sad Man up ! Chiefs scored every possession second half zero sacks by eagles CHIEFS WON TGE FLAG STUFF NEEDS TO STOP !!! It was holding eagles admired it ! But again. They already in FG range Heck could run in to go up 7 🥲🥲
I am tired of flag cry babies Be men say what is correct it was hold if you all had picked Chiefs you would been screaming .read rules hold does not have to be catchable. Interference does. If my job was knowing would seem like you would know CHIEFS WON PERIOD
“You shouldn’t throw a flag in this situation even if it’s a penalty & the player admits it was a penalty because I wanted a closer game” -The Entire NFL Media
You shouldn't call a penalty in a crucial situation when you haven't called that exact same infraction the rest of the game. 65 passes, yet no other penalties. Clean game right?
@@fc-8843 You should call penalties regardless of the situation. A penalty is a penalty. The rule book is very clear. If a penalty is committed and you see it, you throw the flag. The refs can’t see every hold. Just because they didn’t call a penalty before doesn’t mean you get to keep getting away with it or keep committing penalties especially in a critical situation. The player admitted he was wrong and committed the penalty
Pats fan, no rooting interest. I love Rich and this show, but I vehemently disagree with this take. Football is competition first and entertainment a second. The rules are what they are, regardless of the circumstances. Did it detract from the excitement and drama? Certainly. But that's less important than making the right call, which it was, unambiguously.
Correct! I mean where was this argument from the media when Dee Ford merely LINED UP offsides and negated a game ending interception. And where were Chiefs fans when that happened? They were saying Dee Ford how could you rather than.. swallow the whistle refs! Bradberry decided the game, just like Dee Ford! Not the refs. C’mon RES!
I'm actually surprised at the media. What, do they want to get rid of officials, rules and refs? What kind of game would we have if people hired to do the job just stand around and don't do it? They might as well not have refs or rules. People calling for refs to see rule breaking and "swallow the flag" are essentially calling for the end of football as we know it. They sound ridiculous.
It's unfair everyone is upset about the flag for the holding. What about the 2nd half comeback? What about the masterclass coaching by Big Red in the 2nd half? Give Chiefs their props.
It also was a hold. People were bitching about mahomes getting hit late in the Bengals game and that also was a penalty. 1 year from now people will hardly remember the call
10:55 "penalties should not be called even when I know they were comitted because I want to see the team that got penalized for its mistake go consequence-free for it and have a chance to win against the team that suffered from the infraction"
Nobody bought a ticket/ watched the game to see a ref throw a flag is his point. Imagine a first time viewer’s experience being ruined because the official decided to be the superstar.
It was weird how late the flag came in when the hold came at the beginning of the play. It was a hold, but arguably didnt effect the play. I doubt that call would be made if it was the other way around and mahomes would be denied a chance to get the ball back.
This is such an idiotic argument honestly. 🙄 The argument is because it is the super bowl you don't call it at the end of the game, even though the person who held admitted they did it.
Niners fan and Mahomes fan here: Jalen Hurts is the man. He scored two rushing TDS and threw one before the half. I hope people don’t forget this year for them.
Hurts is going to be in real trouble once Jason Kelce retires. All those QB sneaks will eventually catch up to him and Hurts will be injured. Running QBs never last long in this league
I like how people want to ignore the rules when the outcome doesn't go your way. It was obviously a penalty the flag should have been thrown, it was just at a horrible time for Philly which sucks for Philly but it's still a penalty.
Yeah...this is an example of someone ignoring historical context when a penalty DOES go their way. I'm not a fan of either team and that flag ruined my enjoyment of a great game completely.
Idk why people keep talking about the pass being catchable or not catchable. A holding call gets called regardless if your the target of a pass or not targeted by a pass. This pass not being catchable is irrelevant to this entirely.
No one seems to mention that Philly had the ball for 34/35 minutes versus Chiefs 24 minutes. Philly had 10 extra minutes to score more points against the Chiefs.
So at what point do you suggest that we no longer have flags thrown? 1 min left 2 mins left? Because then it’s a free for all. Just wait till the last 2 minutes and tee up the QB can’t call it cuz it may change the out come of the game. Or simply don’t commit the foul. The rule has no clock requisites for fouls being committed.
they just expect refs to swallow their whistles to conform with whatever imaginary line they draw in the sand in their own head. It's pretty much utter nonsense and embarrassing coming from people who are suppose to be "professional analysts".
Wouldn't have been in this situation if the second fumble went in for a TD like it should have. AND the 3rd and long to Goedert didn't count because he never had control then re-controlled it as he stepped out. Total non catch. He juggled. If THAT was a catch than the fumble for a TD was also a catch. He secured it shifted to go forward then got nailed and it came out. He didn't make a step but he certainly had complete control over it. So all a moot point.
I have no idea why this penalty is controversial. He admitted he did hold him. What more do fans want? There was also a clear fumble recovered for a TD that was called back as incomplete. I don’t see anyone complaining about that. People just want something to whine about
The obvious PI against Juju at 13:31 in the 2nd that was said to be an obvious "should've been called". They ate that flag and nobody seems to remember that. It would've been a drive continuing play call, but no flag. I understand the timing in the game. The one thing I just wish the officials would be consistent rather than this "tit for tat" nonsense they've been doing this season is all.
@@WackedOutZeus Bradberry never once said he had been doing it all day in the audio playback. And to suggest he had and there was no call from an official with no video proof to support the claim doesn't work.
Did you see the remarks by one commentator that Bill Belichick had his defense wear gloves to match the opponents uniform so a little grabbing wouldn't be so obvious?
Holding call got made because Mahomes threw the ball towards juju, ref wanted to swallow the flag but Mahomes made it impossible because he forced the ref to question "If juju wasn't held out of the break would he have been open for a TD?" and once that's in question the flag has to be thrown
Why is it that every talking head wants the Eagles to win this game rather than accept that Mahomes and Chiefs won the game fair and square? Strange... They want the Eagles to be given a chance like they desperately wanted Josh Allen to have a chance in the Divisional Game in 2022
Diehard Ref fan here! What a game it was! Right when the game got close, my team took over & threw the yellow flag w/ precise accuracy to secure the spotlight.....clutch!!!
@@EsmoothLA same difference. Anyone that’s a fan of any LA team shouldn’t even be allowed to utter a word about reffing. If anything was rigged it would be for that cesspool of a city.
Can't swallow the flag, if you do that how do you decide when you do and don't swallow the flag? What point? If it's a flag by rule it's a flag doesn't matter what time of the game it is
I think the thing about that call was the refs were letting them play all game long and decided to throw that flag at that moment. And jujus progress wasn't impeded at all. He didn't change or slow down jujus momentum. That's probably why juju didn't motion for a flag or didn't look like he was expecting a flag
I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment, and as a Titans fan, I think we should get an extra WR and CB seems we struggle with everything passing. We should setup a list of all the rules that would be applied to each team and at which time so we know when we can apply them. I also think Burrow and Mahomes should be forced to play lefthanded. Complaining about a penalty that EVERYONE AGREES HAPPENED, even the player that committed the penalty, is just insane to me.
And it was a hold ita a flag Why don't they have that energy for the afc championship 2018 when one of the dline stroke tom brady chest gently and they called pass interference?????
Not calling the DPI leaves you with the Niners-Ravens Super Bowl ending. This was the right call. Bradberry admitted to it. He had to because Bradberry had been embarrassed twice with open touchdowns. I’d rather go down with the right call than let players get away with cheating because it’s the end of the game.
As a heartbroken Eagles fan: Hell of a game. That holding call was brutal, but the Hurts fumble ended up being the difference (and maybe the Quez Watkins drop). Mahomes and the Chiefs got it done. That's really all you can say.
My man , as a diehard fan I feel your pain . For a long time chief would play outstanding games the whole season but would lose in the first round of playoffs . I have seen so many bogus calls against my chiefs in the past . Eagles D was ferocious by the stats but couldn't stop the chiefs offence . The game was lost not cuz of refs but they got out coached by andy and his Crew .
Eagles had a double-digit lead and coughed it up, regardless of the flag. That supposedly "great" Eagles Defense had no answers for Kelce. Dude was WIDE OPEN consistently!
If you advocate to throw the rules out due to the moment then you're advocating for there to be no ethical standards for refs and the league. It was a hold and should be called in this situation.
It was a BS call after 63 pass attempts and no defensive holding or pass interference, calls You don’t throw a Ticky tack flag like that with 90 seconds left. Congratulations to the Chiefs but it sucks to lose like that.
No cause the chiefs oline is that good. When they had current nfl players pick who was going to win they all chose kc cause they knew how physical and smart kc plays!!
@@ur_moms_mistake13 if you watch, both D lines were slipping every play. That’s why there wasn’t a sack in the game. It’s just that the eagles D line is their strength and one of the best units ever statistically. So it effected them more
Dude admitted he held. Conversation over. How are people going to complain about officiating be horrible and then complain about refs making the CORRECT call? Stop it.
I think regardless if they call it or not, people would still be super critical of that play..the idea that a bad call is worse than a bad no-call is just not rational. As many bad calls and bad no calls there are over the years, I’d say this was one of the least controversial calls in previous history. It was a great game period. And like any game, there is usually a call or two that are controversial. To think that the Super Bowl would be any different is naive of us as fans. Same refs in this game as in the rest of the games. Congrats to KC and I’m sure Philly will be back with a vengeance
This is why Bill Parcels was right.. if you are going to have instant reply, then you need to use it for anything and everything. It is ludicrous why we have rules around when you can use it. If the replay doesn't help solve the call, then the play stands as called. But, if it could help make things right, then use it.
when you were looking from the sideline he definitely caught it and his body like changed position to try and make a move, I don’t get them saying he needs to take a third step especially when if you’re in the end zone you only need 2 feet down not 3
As another neutral fan here I agree, it was a great game to watch; one of the best SB in a long while in fact. But that flag at the end did essentially ruin it all because it made it so anticlimactic. Neck and neck the whole game and then the last crucial minute and a half we watch the clock run out and Mahomes taking a knee... not exactly riveting stuff.
Rich... I believe that the ref that threw the flag would not have if the ball went anywhere but to the player that was held..,..thats letting them play

@@mjamitche5245 I agree it was the correct call, but there were similar holds that went uncalled. I want consistency. That's all. For a multi-billion dollar industry, that shouldn't be a tall ask.
At this point the majority of NFL games have a penalty controversy. We need a panel of referees to decide what stays and what goes, apparently. Shoot we might as well get a full jury to decide lol
It was a penalty. You are asking that it be ignored, to the detriment of the team that was fouled. If it had been reviewed, it would have been upheld because it was a penalty.
No they don't. They have internet fans who cry about the refs when they didn't get the outcome they wanted and they have 24/7 low IQ sports talk TV to pander to that same audience.
The referees set the tone of their calls, then cherry-picked THAT play as the flag they’d throw, which ended Super Bowl LVII. The tone was set, then reversed when it mattered most. For this reason, I’m very disappointed - once again - with the officiating in the NFL. It’s utterly inconsistent and hard to watch.
Can you guys explain to me why was the flag was so late after the play was over?? Usually holding calls are flag during the play. Something not right here. All time robbery
No the flag came as soon as u see the jersey pulled the flag went super high in the air. Fox showed the wrong replay over and over causing this problem 🙄. I bet the all 22 view shows it after he breaks
Put it like this...That penalty was so tricky tacky that if the flag wasn't thrown, nobody would think it's a penalty. I've seen guys get worse done and no flag was thrown🤷🏿♂️
Saying don't throw the flag because of the situation is the same as saying the referees should intentionally favor one team over another. You can have it both ways. If the referees see it, they should call it. The rules do not include language about calling a penalty if it does not influence the outcome of a big game.
I've seen the replay so many times, I don't think it should be called in the last 2 minutes of the game. It seems too borderline and a lot of officials wouldn't have made it
My personal take having been a fan over 50 years, is call ALL penalties, even if you have to install multiple angled cameras to get every vantage point, even if you have extra hour to game. Get the calls right, eliminate the controversy, and stop the infuriating selective penalties or ignored infractions that DO determine outcomes of many games!
Catch that was not a catch...hold that was not a hold...whatever. There is a human factor in each game...and even James Bradberry admits that did hold him with his right hand (which we couldn't see from the angle). The Eagles even said it didn't come down to that one play.
If you don't want the conversation to be about it, don't talk about it. Clearly the right call. Get out of here with the 'I wanted to see a better finish'. Maybe stop them before that point? Maybe don't give up 35 points? Don't fumble when you aren't touched?
I’m sad we didn’t get the win but I’m okay with it. Jalen has proven without a doubt he is the leader we need going forward. This will just be another chapter for Jalen Hurts, he uses every piece of adversity and turns it into motivation. We will be back make no mistake! Fly Eagles Fly 🦅
James Bradbury showed tons of class. Although I disagree with issuing a flag in that situation, gotta tip my hat to Bradbury. Good luck next year I will be cheering for you bro!
Bradburry is taking the high road rather than complaining about the call. If anyone thinks he truly believes what he said then they are a fool. I'm sure there were a handful of plays with just as much contact and the flag was not throw which is why I think the flag should not have been thrown. You cant let them play all game and then call a ticky tac penalty at the most crucial point of the game
Seriously, What did you think was going to happen? The Chiefs made it through the playoffs not by their play but by the flag so why would anything change in the Super Bowl? When Kansas is involved the flags get more frequent in the 4th quarter of the game is close. Mahomes is really enjoying those MVP's.... Most Valuable Penalties
This is why fans and announcers don't get to ref the games - They are always talking about perception not reality. The ref saw a penalty, the player confessed that he did hold, end of story. The ref was supposed to "eat" the flag-- Why? Because it was an important moment in the game? I hear this argument from announcers all the time "let them play". It is total BS. Change the rules if you want a free-for-all. Otherwise, accept reality.
When General Patton was addressing the troops at the beginning of the movie one of the things he said was "America loves a winner and will not tolerate a loser!" It's a sad commentary of our times that just the opposite is true. The Patriots found that out during their glory years and now it's the Chiefs' turn to bear the brunt of America's hatred of excellence. The next team with a dynasty will experience the same thing no doubt.
