Vanessa Feltz responds to comments she made about coeliac disease on This Morning.
The TalkTV presenter appeared during a segment on the ITV daytime programme where she offered advice to a caller who phoned about “being forced to have a gluten-free Christmas”.
In response to the social media backlash, Vanessa says: “I did not nor would I for a second suggest they should put the coeliac guest at risk.
“Nor did I intend to show any disrespect or misunderstanding of how unpleasant it can be leading your life as a coeliac."
She’s joined by emergency medicine doctor Saleyha Ahsan and Jason Samuel, who has coeliac disease to discuss what it’s like living with the condition.

I've been glutened by having a meal next to someone eating a normal meal and a microscopic amount of it transferring to my plate. I start projectile vomiting an hour after I get glutened and this continues for 24 hours. The joint pain, exhaustion, headaches, depression etc doesn't lift for 3 weeks and I don't feel well again for maybe 2 or 3 months. No I won't die, but please don't underplay AGAIN what could happen to me in a non gluten free environment. This kind of broadcast is why people roll their eyes through ignorance when I try to make my day as safe as possible. I'm not fussy, I'm trying to not be sick for months.

The biggest sorry not sorry video going. The doctor was seriously under informing about the disease. coeliacs have to avoid Wheat, rye, oats and barley. The doctor made out is was a bit of a sore tummy and mild diarrhea and bloating. It can be much worse. When I was diagnosed I had to be hospitalised. I went from 12 stone to 6 stone in 4 weeks. I was severely malnourished and my gut was that sensitive I couldn't keep fluids down. Most people don't get diagnosed as children so damage is being done to the body and can lead to other more serious problems such as osteoporosis due to our reduced ability to absorb nutrients. We are also at a heightened risk of getting other stomach colon illnesses. People like Vanessa who ridicule it as us being fussy sends the message that anyone ordering gluten free are being fussy and pathetic. I personally laughed when Vanessa said she would never want to upset people but her career is filled with moments of her saying offensive stuff to deliberately rile people.

That’s was the least heartfelt, least authentic “apology” I ever heard. And please, refrain from talking for a second and let the doctor go into the long term implications and health issues an aging celiac patient faces. That’s an important part of understanding the disease.

Appreciate it being highlighted but as a coeliac myself, the issue I still have with this & the other clips from This Morning is that cross contamination wasn’t covered as being a major problem. Even one crumb of gluten can cause damage - whether that be from putting gluten free bread in a normal toaster or dipping a crisp into a dip that has been contaminated with another crisp containing gluten. That was and is still the issue I have. And overall, that’s the misinformation that’s now out there & hasn’t been cleared up

Cross contamination is my biggest worry. All it takes is one crumb and I've lost a week of my life, barely able to get out of bed. I'd rather not eat at all than risk another reaction like the last one I had, which was due to cross-contamination.

Yes! A friend keeps a set of dishes and cooking utensils set aside for when her grandson is coming. She serves everyone a gluten free meal! We went shopping for ingredients for her to use when she was taking baking and when the boys came to help her get her tree and set it up. Perhaps if Vanessa had let the doctor speak further, they could have explained that.

The Mother-in-law was having a buffet at 5pm, not a Roast dinner for Christmas day. This is stated at the end of the original video. With a buffet its extremally hard if not impossible to avoid cross contanimation as people who aren't used to dealing with coeliac diease will mix utensils. A well meaning relative may see the 15 year olds snack box and out it on the main table with the rest of the food, the 15 year old won't have the snack box on them at all times, they won't be able to take it to the loo. I've had mixed gluten free and normal food buffets in the past and it is fraught, I've had people trying to 'help' by mixing up gluten free and normal left overs into containers making it impossible for me to have any of the leftovers. I've tried keeping the gluten free food seperate but things 'migrate' with a large number of guests. This is the Mother-in-laws own home too, they need to respect her wish to keep her home completely gluten free. When I get glutened, it's not just stomach cramps, it's awful. I get hot sweats , feel weak and dizzy and an impending feeling of doom. If you give me a gun at that point, I'd probably shoot myself. Eventually I get the most horrible diarrhea, this can happen several times. All this from one crumb of something containing gluten.
@dexine4723
@dexine4723 9 месяцев назад
I don't get the feeling of doom or the hot sweats (well, I do, but that's the menopause!), but I get the weak, dizzy feeling and brain fog so bad I can barely remember my own name. Worst symptom for me is joint pain rather than diarrhoea, but I usually take so much codeine to kill the pain that it stops any gut symptoms! With a really bad reaction, it feels like I have an elephant sitting on my chest and I have sudden, gushing nosebleeds (ruined a pillow last time). And yes, all from just one crumb or a few grains of flour.

This program is still downplaying the issue. Even the doctor and the person with coeliac. I have a relative whose son had projectile vomiting and diarrhea as a baby. This occurred whenever the mother ate gluten and then breastfed the baby. Even a small amount can cause excruciating pain. His uncle is c0eliac too and his wedding was totally gluten free. Everything was delicious! A friend's son can not tolerate any gluten either. It is in so many products. They need to check the ingredients every time he eats anything. My friend keeps a separate set of dishes and baking utensils to make gluten free items for her grandson. Many restaurants dust fries (chips) with flour to make them brown. I know of a church where someone is coeliac and if there is a special event, there is always a table removed from the other food where everything on that table is gluten free.

I don’t usually make a comment but I am furious that Vanessa allowed to give “advice” for something she clearly knows nothing about. I myself am coeliac and my father and aunt were too. My dad was very sensitive to gluten and became very ill even if something was cooked in same oil. My auntie actually died because of lack of knowledge and became so ill she did not survive. I am not so sensitive luckily but know the importance of keeping to a GF diet as there are many symptoms that people are not always aware of ie depression and even miscarriages due to lack of nutrients being absorbed. It’s a pity there is still so much ingnorance on this subject.

Celiac disease is a very serious thing! Any type of cross contamination can cause damage to the person with celiac; it's an autoimmune condition so your body literally attacks itself! The issue hasn't been cleared up by this video & you haven't apologised for your misleading comments Vanessa. If you know how horrible it is then you shouldn't be telling people that a person with celiac disease is unreasonable for wanting a gluten free Christmas. I myself an gluten intolerant so can tolerate mild amounts but suffer (without having to stop my usual daily activities). My friend who is celiac is extremely unwell if he consumes it anything with even miniscule trace amounts of gluten - it literally limits his daily activity for weeks! If it was a nut allergy it would be taken seriously, so celiac disease needs to be taken just as seriously!

Vanessa you really need to do more research on this as you’ve actually made yourself sound worse. Celiacs all have different levels of what contamination we can cope with. If you touch a piece of bread and then touch my food (or my food touches anywhere that has had gluten on it) my stomach will bloat to 7 months pregnant size, which will last for about 6 weeks. I will also have severe diarrhoea up to 20 times a day for up to a week and a half. I will also have a headache and my joints will ache for up to a week. Among many more much less drastic issues. So no, having gluten in my house won’t kill me like a peanut allergy would. Would you risk it in my position? The reason people are so angry with you is the hardest thing we deal with is other people’s complete lack of knowledge on what we deal with so they actually make us ill because it’s not that serious !! And it won’t kill us !! Disappointed

This! 💯 I am disappointed in the doctor and the person with coeliac who downplayed the issue. I have relatives and friends with issues as you describe. Projectile diarrhea and vomiting at the same time, incredible pain. I would have nothing to do with family or friends who refuse to educate themself. I know of people who have deliberately offered a meal using gluten to prove that gluten would not harm the child. This ended up with a trip to the hospital.

I’ve got coeliac, diagnosed 25 years ago. I think a lot of the problem is the people who “jump on a bandwagon”, don’t need to follow a special diet out of medical necessity, but do because it’s “trendy”. A few years after I was diagnosed, my brother’s stepdaughter suddenly announced she had coeliac disease. I asked her which doctor she’d seen and if she’d had the blood tests done. She ignored me. She then went out into my parents’ kitchen, picked up a Costco muffin and started to eat it, whining all the time about how difficult things were. It was trendy to say it when she doesn’t have it at all.

Vanessa is protesting too much. She came across as sneering and dismissive, and it's also so uncommon (1 in 100) that I doubt very much if she has 'many' friends who have coeliac disease. Cross-contamination is a real risk for us, so cooking gluten-free and non-gluten-free in the same kitchen can lead to accidents, and turns eating out into Russian roulette. I react badly, so just one crumb of something containing gluten will put me in bed for several days - it's not just a bit of bloating or fatigue that will go away with some cider vinegar... However, a meal like Xmas dinner can easily be gluten-free, and aside from Yorkshire pudding, the danger is usually in the gravy (many commercial brands contain gluten), or in any dessert like Xmas pudding. In terms of snacks, there are plenty of gluten-free crisps, chocolates etc that are all main-stream brands, so a visitor probably wouldn't even notice that they were going gluten-free for the day, unless they were told.

I think perhaps some much needed education is needed on your part, Vanessa. Firstly, on how to actually give an apology (because let's face it, you pretty much blamed it on others' understanding rather than yourself) and on what cross-contamination actually is. Some of your best friends may be coeliac, but you obviously need to have a chat, and actually listen to what they have to say. Coeliac disease is also a spectrum- some reactions to gluten will be much more acute than others, but the damage to our digestive systems is something that we all share.

I was diagnosed with severe coeliac disease when I was 1, if I eat wheat then I vomit for 4-6 hours after about 40 minutes since eating t, then I pass out until the next day and feel ill the next day. It’s not just eating it but I’m also very sensitive so cross contamination or even breathing in wheat flour causes the same reaction. A lot of people don’t think it’s bad because you din’t have the same reaction as a peanut or egg allergy, but it is bad still! I remember being 7 and saying “I want to die, I don’t want to live anymore!” Because I had gone to a restaurant and the worker had said the food was gluten free but it didn’t look like it so we asked him to check with the chef, he came back a few minutes later with an answer of ‘the chef says it’s gluten free.’ It wasn’t, my dad and brother asked the chef and the chef said no one ever asked about a gluten free food. It’s annoying because I’ve had to leave school trips, camps, family reunions, competitions and so on because of people lying about stuff being gluten free because they din’t think it is bad,

My hubby cooks the meals, ensuring that nearly all the food gluten free. If there is a mix, then the gluten free (GF) foods are cooked completely separately from the rest. He can’t have some gluten free items as he’s allergic to dextrose (such as stuffing), so he’ll cook both a gluten free and gluten version, ensuring that there is no cross contamination between the two. We don’t even have separate pans and utensils to cook GF food in, as you only need to ensure that they have been washed properly every time. The exception to this are tins that have joins, such as the bread tins or spring release ones, where I will use doubled up tin liners to play safe. When it comes to the grill, hubby will cook his items on tin foil to prevent cross contamination of the grill tray. In respect to the Xmas meal; there are some great GF Yorkshire puddings available that taste no different to the ‘normal’ ones. The only difference you’ll notice between GF stuffing and ‘normal’, is that the mix is slightly more powdery. Gravy can be an issue, but there are several brands that are GF. Pigs in blankets that are GF can be found in most supermarkets, and they are even making GF Xmas puds as well now. I’m lucky in so far as I my Coeliac disease was only triggered when I hit 40, and cross contamination will only cause me to have cramps and severe indigestion (eating a pasty is a different matter - think the pea soup scene from The Exorcist!). My daughter on the other hand was triggered when she was being weaned (I am thankful now that breastfeeding didn’t work out for me), and it took 10 years until she was finally diagnosed (in the 1990s, Coeliac Disease awareness was almost nonexistent in GP surgeries). She will react badly to any ingestion of gluten, resulting in projectile vomiting, cramping, and sometimes collapsing due to the pain. Both of us however feel tired and under the weather and will still have cramps, whilst the body is regrowing the villi in our small intestine, as the body is unable to retrieve the nutrients that the villi usually collect, in order to meet its needs.

Cross contamination!!! With the best of intentions, “ there is many a slip twixt the cup and the lip” it us not just eat the plain stuff. A hostess who does not have Celiac ,or an immediate family member cannot identify all the pitfalls with cooking. A pot may have residue, surface you cut on, butter you used may have crumbs, cooking spray you used to release that gf cake mix… may have gluten in It,. flavors, colored sugars, spices, airborne flour from baking may have settled in your crisco, on surfaces, ( possibly while you are carefully cooking other things. It is not cut and dried easy. We have opted for bringing stuff as we know from learning to navigate all the gluten in places people would never think it was …is a problem. It is a game of roulette at restaurants if staff are not trained well. A simple apology from VF with a few words admitting she doesn’t know enough about coeliac disease would have made a huge difference. Instead she went on and on justifying her stance. People with coeliac are rightly annoyed because this is the attitude that is given most places. It’s not a choice diet like vegan or vegetarianism. Cross contamination is the biggest threat for coeliacs eating out or at friends houses and it can completely ruin a holiday. The upside to all of this is the spotlight on coeliac disease. Try not shaking your head in a dismissive fashion when the caller begins to talk, her MIL thinks she is being a good hostess by considering her gf guest and I wonder had she not said anything whether anyone would have noticed they were eating gf. Fussy 15 year old? He can pig out when he gets home and grandma should have something he can snack on if he doesn't want to eat the meal

We all suffer to varying degrees. Some more than others. It is a major concern, to a coeliac sufferer, if they are going to survive a meal without being made ill. Apple cider vinegar does not help me. If only it was that simple.

This is one example of the harm your comnents caused, seen on Facebook: "I don't watch This Morning. I became aware of this appalling segment via social media. I'm not coeliac however I do have a wheat allergy and gluten intolerance. Before I figured this out at the age of 43, I'd been suffering IBS symptoms along with joint pain, eczema and cognitive /mental health symptoms. I'd no idea these other symptoms were linked to eating wheat/gluten. I became so unwell I could barely eat as I couldn't digest food. The biggest challenge I have is the lack of knowledge and attitudes of the general public. I watched this segment and wanted to cry. Sharing food is such an important thing for humans and the exclusionary treatment I have received over the years has been awful. It's terrible to feel like you don't deserve to share food, eat out etc because you're 'other'. It's difficult to relax and feel safe when eating out and I've even been accidentally poisoned by my own family. I feel self conscious when having to continually question others before eating. Ms Feltz's wilful ignorance has made me want to crawl under a rock. It's the work Christmas meal this week and if I had agreed to go, I'd be pulling out right about now. (I'm not as I'm working and it's a buffet restaurant, which is an immediate no no in food allergy world). Vanessa Feltz, I hope you feel proud of the distress you've caused to so many people". I'm not impressed by your non apology.

A member of our family is coeliac. We don't have a completely gluten free spread at Christmas but most of it will be and if its not, everyone knows what isn't GF. You get used to checking labels on food too, it becomes second nature. Vanessa did sound like she was scoffing at the measures being taken by the family in the original program. She did come across as being a bit insensitive to the issues but the degree of upset from some people was ridiculous. The doctor was excellent I thought and her starting comment about this whole affair has resulted in people talking about the issue and hopefully being better informed was spot on.

Me again… when we found out my son had Celiac, I had to spend HOURS reading up on potential additives in food. Things you would NEVER think contained gluten. I had to read every label, call companies, find out if the gf label really had a gf product. ( cross contamination, or if they really knew what a gf product was. ( labeling is more accurate now because if laws ) It is better now but still is a process. It is a fact that you will feel different, not be included, watch people eat the “good” stuff. BUT it is safer to be sure and bring your own feast and to keep it away from the other stuff. ( We have had airborne issues in restaurants and prep. And people not understanding what constitutes contamination) ( make sure no one is handling it with gluten contaminated fingers or shared utensils) in conclusion as you can see with the video, people can be offended, and ignorant of how serious a problem Celiacs face on a daily basis. It and it can be a big social wet blanket. It can feel like a major social exclusion, a roulette with safety, and ignorant people can be hostile or dismiss it , like its s dietary choice. And video…. ( like a kid caught in the gf cookie jar)

this is such an infuriating “apology”, this is being made out to be a mild disease when I was so poorly I was vomiting anytime I’d eat, even gluten free food because my body, was so damaged. I also know of others who have ended up on feeding tubes. Misinformation once it’s out is used by the ignorant few to belittle and discredit the disease, so this “apology” has done fuck all to help. 80% of people live with undiagnosed coeliac disease, and I wouldn’t wish it on my own worst enemy. Not only are you battling your health concerns, but also people that see it as a trend or a fad diet, even those who will “test” you by giving you gluten and claiming it’s gluten free to see if you’re affected.

Coeliac disease is real..but I couldn't cook for everyone if it's not something I don't eat, and noone else is... so if they offer to bring their own, I would say Yes Please!! I have a couple of cousins that have this issue and they do bring their own bits and pieces. Obviously they can eat the same meat and veg, but can't eat the stuffing, breads, Yorkshire pudding, cakes and puddings, so if they bring their own mini ones, all fine!

I understand what Vanessa was trying to say. Not unreasonable and it’s not about being exclusive either. What about the diabetics, lactose intolerant, the hypercholesterolemics, the allergic etc. We can not always expect the world to cater to us and we need to take our own precautions. And this is not to suggest we entirely ignore the dietary requirements of others either. Merry Christmas Vanessa.
@lallydoo24
@lallydoo24 9 месяцев назад
The difference being that alot of diets do get catered for but gluten free os met by the stupid ill informed opinion of us being fussy eaters. This call was quite unique in one respected that was the gluten free person was been catered for. Most coeliacs when invited yo events normally take their own pack up as most beige buffet food would make us ill. Most Coeliacs do this as there is usually little attempt to cater for us. I want to say Iappluad the callers mother in law for going above and beyond for the coeliac family member, who will probably think this suggestion is her biggest gift that year. The gift of kindness and consideration.

Regardless of allergies it's hard to cater for everyone. However if your friends/ family are aware of your allergies/intolerances then they should where possible try to cater for your needs. It's not unreasonable for the lady that called in to attend the gluten free Christmas dinner. It can be just as tasty as one with gluten in.
@cgsigman5345

A diabetic is not going to have an attack if you drink sugar near them. Lactose intolerant will be fine if you eat cheese near them. A person with an airborne peanut allergy should be awarded more care. Tiny particles of gluten cross-contamination also should be given more care, because it affects other people, in this case the host. Are you starting to understand now? It’s basic humanity, don’t knowingly hurt other people when it’s easily avoidable.

Raising awareness in restaurants and all food outlets would go a long way in helping coeliac sufferers.
