Released in the mid-to-late 70s, this educational film titled “Defensive Driving Course Session Eight: The Responsible Driver” discusses techniques for defensive driving. This film was produced by Jack Lieb Productions Inc, Chicago and sponsored by the National Safety Council in conjunction with the Green Cross for Safety and is the eighth episode of an educational film series where each episode describes a different element of driving. This short film is broken up into various fictional scenarios that highlight the necessity of alert or defensive driving in order to prevent pedestrian accidents while simultaneously presented and narrated by American radio and television broadcaster, Hugh Downs. Additionally, the film consists of footage that depicts typical suburban small town landscapes and houses as well as various car models from the 1970s.

Clip of car hitting child-like test dummies at UCLA-ITTE (known today as UCLA Institute of Transportation Engineers) test lab (5:09). Young man riding bike on suburban street (5:38). Freeze frame of moment of accident for man on the bicycle (5:55). Sign for Flannery’s Tavern in Charleston, Indiana lit up at night (5:59). Intoxicated patron exiting the bar (6:14). Young couple inside a car (6:40). Freeze frame of moment intoxicated man is hit by the young couple’s car, dark street lit by LED commercial signs (7:04). Demo video of pedestrians wearing reflective clothing at night (7:07). Young man driving motorcycle on a freeway, mother and son tailing behind in a car (7:47). Motorcyclist and crashed motorcycle crashed on the side of the road (8:36). Stills of scenes previously shown throughout the film of various drivers and pedestrians (8:40). Hugh Downs driving a car on the highway while talking to the camera (9:00). Hugh Downs speaking to the camera on the side of the road (9:29).

Thanks. that makes sense given the images of some the items being filmed, such as the later model Chevrolet Caprice, the suburban housing, and the 55 mile per hour speed limit sign.

@@jfv65 Race car drivers in 1970 were only wearing 3-point seatbelts. NASCAR didn't require 5--point harnesses them until 1993!!

@@free2choose80 I've owned two '69 Mustangs and a '72 Mach 1. Granted they didn't have modern 3-point seatbelts. They did have a lap belt and a shoulder belt.

Nobody in this video were wearing a SEATBELT!!..... Infact, the seatbelt law wasn't being ENFORCED back during that time.

Yes, no seat belt.... and he was actually driving and looking at and talking to a camera. Hahahaha....this is about equivalent to our cell phones now. Funny....not much has changed.

I don't think that was a Ford he was driving. That wasn't a Ford steering wheel nor did Ford have the shoulder belts in that position.

I wonder if it was a Periscope or some other propaganda co. that produced a reel about how if we don't stop cutting down trees, well all have to go to a museum to see what they looked like. Now that was some big propaganda!
