The votes of 63 million Latino Americans will be a deciding factor in the November election. Despite his history of anti-immigration rhetoric, Donald Trump has been making inroads with this constituency, which in the past leaned Democratic. Award-winning journalist Paola Ramos investigates this shift in her new book "Defectors: The Rise of the Latino Far Right and What It Means for America."

Sadly, this is not shocking. As a Latino, it cannot be overstated how deeply ingrained racism is in the psyche of many Latinos. You combine the history of colonialism, the generational distance between younger Latino Americans and their migrant ancestors who more directly experienced American xenophobia, and a sense of cultural machismo and it’s sadly not shocking that a large segment of Latino Americans have gravitated towards the far right fringes of the American body politic.

k, I had a cuban teacher who spoke at length about what she and her family went through to come to the US. Under trump, they would not be accepted. They would have been sent back to their country to die as traitors. Is it that latinos are more comfortable under a dictatorship and that is why they lean right? It is a mistake leading only to the same thing that you fled your country for.

As a Latino, you shouldn't be surprised there are tons of extremely Christian Right Wing Latinos. Latinos are often misinterpreted as ALL being "Natives" or the oppressed populace that European conquistadors put underneath their big, shiny black boots since the late 1400s, when they first landed on islands in the Western Hemisphere. But, in reality, you have "Latinos" descended from the most extremely & fascist Right Wing Portuguese, Spaniards, Italians, Germans, French, Dutch, and English people... from the US, to Cuba, to Central America, all the way to Argentina and Brazil... The BULK of the most racist Nazis and Fascists from Europe ESCAPED to the Northern & Southern Hemispheres, in the Americas, from WW1 to post-WW2. They also are in Australia and New Zealand... South Africa and the rest of Africa, in the open and in highly armed military compounded neighborhoods... Nick Fuentes, Enrique Tarrio, the Castro brothers, the Ortega brothers, 99.9% of the autocrats from Mexico through Central America, to all of South America... THESE ARE DESCENDED from Right Wing, Christian Fascists and Nazis.... from EUROPE. These Right Wing "Latinos" (many in the various KKK, Nazi/Neo Nazi and Fascist groups) are opposed to Communists... opposed to Socialists ... opposed to Progressives.... opposed to Feminists ... opposed to non-Christians... opposed to Natives... opposed to Asians... opposed to Blacks, and ESPECIALLY OPPOSED TO Jews.... opposed to Liberals & Liberalism & WESTERN LIBERAL DEMOCRACY... opposed to multi-culturalism & 21st century diversity (outside of Right Wring European traditions and beliefs and practices).... although TODAY they accept a few small percentages of psychologically, ideologically twisted Blacks, Asians, women et al who AGREE WITH THEM, that society was better in the early 1900s, the 1800s, the 1700s, etc.....twisted Blacks and Asians like Clarence Thomas and that Black Nazi guy running for governor of North Carolina, who also wouldn't mind owning a few Blacks slaves, today, if Slavery were to return...

wao...I'm a Democrat and she's completely wrong on this. A lot of Hispanics/Latinos refused to embrace this binary-color culture that America promotes and that to us feels like America is frozen in time of the 1950s. To those of us that come from very diverse societies (because "el mestizaje") it feels weird that America can't move beyond black and white. It surprises me that she fails to acknowledge that. Somehow after 50+ years America can't seem to grow out of the black and white mentality. It will take time before the United States sees itself as a mixed-race nation.

@@wilber2k06 - Speaking for myself, I was raised to be accepting of everyone, we are all from different walks of life, and everyone should be treated as we would like to be treated. I didn’t learn prejudice until I was an adult, and caution in some environments is warranted. I politely disagree with you, while we are a divided nation, we are all equals and the color or our skin is no different than eye or hair colors. In my opinion, Democrats are largely of the same belief as myself, diversity is power, it’s all good. Republicans like my own brother have changed since the Trump era began to embrace their beliefs, biblical beliefs, that God separated the races for cause, we are not suppose to speak or interact with them in any way. We as a nation, are not there yet, but when I see my relatives believing ALL Hispanics or people of color are a danger to America… my blood boils. Not to mention my mind blown when they support the very party that thinks they don’t belong here.

@@Erin-Thor I'm more than happy to have this debate with you. Again, I consider myself a Democrat and she gave a lot of false or distorted information on this interview. It just shows her lack or distorted interpretation of Hispanic/Latino history. Now, it sounds like you're trying to paint a broad stroke based on what your relatives believe. May I remind you that unchecked prejudice always leads to some type of "ism" - take your pick. The reason I say this is, before Obama was president of the United States, he said in a television interview ("60 Minutes" with Steve Kroft) that he considers himself a "mutt" (another way of saying mulatto / moreno / mixed race). Obama added that society in the United States views him as black because he was born with more features from his father than his mother. That means racism is part of society in the US and is institutionalized in the States. Now, in another interview Obama said the reason he will continue to say that he is black (even though he said he considers himself a mutt (mulatto/moreno/mixed)) is until white people in the US start saying that they are mixed too. You can even find recordings of some of his presidential press conferences during his presidency where he jokingly says that he and his dog, Bo, are mutts.

Upsurd! Only Americans think Latinos are anything else than white. I am from Europe and I always thought of latinos as white, Brasilians? Of course white. Of course mixed race with the local indigenous population etc, but never did we here think of them than any different than the difference between scandinavians and italians!! America is so freaking obsessed with race they keep inventing new races and new identities all the time. 🤦🏻‍♀️ French people not treating non-french the same? Big news! One of the most famously „proud” nations to of Europe that look down at anyone non-French, other Europeans too! But that’s not about „not-white”, only Amerivsns are so obsessed with colour and they are infecting the whole world with it!!! Here in Europe we never think of poeple as being a different race just becuase they have darker hair or skintone, just think of Spanish or Italian people vs. Polish or Latvian? Are we different races???!!! Syop spreading your problems to the whole world, America. Are Greeks not white? Are Turks not-white? Are even Indian people not white? I alwyas was tought we are all the same race, with regional differences and that’s how you should start thinkint too. Creating a latino „race” just because they are non blonde like the ancestors of English/Itish/German is freaking insane. It’s a culture difference not RACE!

What a great guest. Thank you for the highly informative interview. I've been appalled at my immediate family taking such curious stances on topics that I didn't know they were passionate about. How did my family become against "Black Lives Mattter"? How did they come to believe that Democrats and their candidates kill babies up to and even after 9 months? This is coming from the church. The example Paola gave about a pastor saying 'don't listen to the news, listen to me/the church' is definitely spot on. Such strange times in which we live. The church backs lies, lying candidates and racism and instead of working to free their hearts and souls of their people they urge them to vote against their own good/the truth.

Great interview and totally agree with her observations and drawn conclusions especially due to class based on skin color shades and the 3rd generations thinking of themselves as true Americans as this was explained in my ESOL class like this: First generation usually came here not as children but as adults, so they often keep their language and traditions and don't really assimilate a lot. The second generation are their children who were bilingual and helped their parents and possibly their grandparents navigate the English language. They had assimilated, but still honored many of their parent's traditions which at times caused friction. For example when I was teaching, a girl's education was felt to not be as important as a boy's, so they missed school more to help out at home, which at times upset my top female students as they had educational goals they wanted to fulfill. The third generation are the children of those parents and were totally assimilated with many not even knowing the language of their grandparents as it was never spoken anymore since translations were no longer needed as well as having no connection nor history of life living under a dictator/authoritarian. But what really caught my ear regarding the rise of Latino Evangelical churches as Catholicism was cast aside, for these began popping up where I taught in the mid '90s and to be honest, gave me pause even then.

I think they dynamic in the Americas is different. Because Latinos in the US are willful immigrants and hold traditional Christian values, they more readily assume American conservative ideology, With Ireland(and correct me if I'm wrong) there is a strong identity due to subjugation by the British. My best mate is from Northern Ireland and his earliest memories were of the British military raiding his family farm looking for IRA weapons caches. I'm African American and as I get older with a few decades of life experience, and study western philosophy for my masters degree, the more I understand just how anti-Black the fabric of America really is. And I was all in on American patriotism, wanted to work for the state department spreading democracy across the world. But I see now. It took me a while to get here, but I see.

When they survey the group with masters the numbers lean more liberal and the group with PhD, there were hardly any who vote red. The reason is due to many of them escaping Castro, who fought to give more rights to Black and Brown Cubans. And in doing so, took a lot of wealth away from that group (whiter looking Cubans). You ever notice how more of the Cuban Americans are less Black (the ones not in professional baseball)? It's because the poor didn't all come to America, while a lot of fairer skinned Cubans did after getting their wealth taken away. That's compounded with who they're surrounded by in America too and the politics of the majority in the area. There are more right wingers in Florida than areas like California. On the other hand, in Mexico, more poor people tended to immigrate to America. The richer Mexicans still live in Mexico for they had no reason to leave, and the Mexicans that had their wealth taken away by revolutionaries happened in the 1800s to early 1900s. They stayed in Mexico for the time being and didn't have the recency bias of socialism=bad, compared to the Cubans who dealt with Castro in the 1950s. My family is a good example of this. From my mom's side, they are fairer skin and we can trace our ancestry back to the 1700s. This is only possible for people who had more wealth. They had their wealth stolen by revolutionaries in the 1800s and for good reason. They most likely gained that wealth at the expense of the less fortunate. And so they stayed in Mexico, as equally poor for decades until they decided to migrate as farmers picking fruits. Because of that they don't have any bad feelings towards socialism or communism. That negative sentiment died out as it was from 60-80 years ago before they immigrated (they immigrated in the 40s). Hence you see more support for Democrats who do a better job of not scapegoating Mexican American migrants. So Mexican America right wingers (fewer in numbers), tend to choose that due to right wingers pushing christianity as a focal point in campaigns. By invoking abortions, they can capture a large amount of Christian (not Catholic) fundamentalists. Hence why a generic "Latino" voting block doesn't make much sense. There is more nuance and if anything it makes more sense to categorize which hispanics immigrated from where as a voting block.

The far-right presence in the Latino demographic is due to migrant Latinos. Latinos born and raised in the US lean toward the left, it's part of our reality as a minority group. For those born in the US that lean right has to do with owning businesses and homes owning, taxes then matter. This also applies to migrants who come from a nation where if you don't provide for yourself and your family, no one eats. Not to mention strong catholic values. What's not surprising yet unintelligible is how Republicans are not taking advantage of this demographic change. it's not surprising because migrant from Latin America will soon realize that part of conservatism in the US is racism. There is an old saying among Latinos who are white in place of origin and migrate to the US, that "your last name betrays you".

I can relate to Ramos comments about latino migrants distancing themselves to new migrants or refugees. This phenomenom happens in the Vietnamese community too, even among 1st migrant/refugee generation. What Ramos did not discuss is the strategic Republican labelling of Democrats as communist and socialist. Many latinos who emigrated to the US came from a communist/socialist country like Cuba. They are frightened of such regime, and hence pivot towards Trump. This is a well known reason why the majority of Cubans supports Trump. I find Ramos conflicting herself when she first said younger generation Latinos consider themselves Americans, i.e detaching themselves from their migrant background. But when asked if Harris via too much towards the right on her immigration policy, Ramos said she'd rish losing young Latino voters whose parents/grand parents were migrants who fled a violent regime of their country. Because it's the only realistic thing to achieve with congress, once the house returns to sanity and T.'s grip on MAGA senators releases. Last week at the boarder however, shoe outlined a much more balanced position of herself: Getting the immigration system fixed, with means partly agreed in the boarder bill but as well own ideas of complementing them, AND AND!!! clear premise for a human behavior and the reckognotion of the needs of migrants that had to leave their homes. That is much more sophisticated than just "tough on the boarder". Paola Ramos is full of it. The example of the Dominican woman is totally off base. Altho Ramos is half Mexican and half Cuban she was born in Florida and grew up in Spain and the eastern U.S. Her analysis is totally flawed and her views are as a total outsider with no first-hand or even second-hand experience living in a Spanish American country or growing up as a Mexican American in western U.S. state. The Spanish caste system in the new world didn't give permission to the population to "draw a direct line to your whiteness." It was the opposite. It was created to mostly exclude people not born in Spain. This is totally made up by Ramos. Ramos doesn't understand what the Dominican woman Isabel is saying when she says she is "Hispanic." Isabel doesn't identify by her race. Rather she identifies herself by her language, customs, and religion - "Hispanic." Ramos thinks Isabel is trying to that she is in fact white. The other issue for Ramos to learn is that Mexican and Mexican Americans are not "Latinos." Latinos are Cubans, Columbians, Venezuelans, Salvadorians, Dominicans, Peruvians, Nicaraguans, etc. Mexico and U.S. southwest where 90% of Mexicans are located is a part of North America. We Mexicans rejected the "Latino" term by defecting the French on Cinco de Mayo in 1862 in Puebla, Mexico. It was the French who created the term "Latino" to include themselves as also a country that said mass in Latin in order to justify an invasion of Mexico. We are not Latinos. Please interview someone else with a more persuasive background in explaining these important matters.

If you change your values to get a GF, you will end up with the wrong GF, same with politics.

She's constantly reporting on latinos going to the right and loving Donald Trump and doing a few of her interviews in these small towns for people who don't get any information at all, frankly I'm sick of it it just starts to feel like fear-mongering with her, it's always a threat always a threat always a threat, for once report on something decent

A lot of these people like Cubans were the white people where they come from. Classism, and colorism, and racism is not confined to only xertain people or places.

Much of it has to do with Pentecostalism, which is the fastest spreading religion in the world at this point. To demilitarize Christianity, Pentecostalism needs to reform.

Classism, sexism, some racism between white and brown Latinos, single issue voters on abortion, admiration for dictators on the right, falling for buzzwords like "Communism", and last but not least some very low information voters who don't understand the nuances and only look at things like gas prices and increased costs

Superb interview. Impeccable reasonings and observations supported by research but most importantly because we migrants see those realities reflected within our communities in our day to day lives. Kudos to her and yes, Trump is a populist caudillo not different to Chavez, Morales, Correa, Lula, Bukele, Bolsonaro and such.
