It is always so stunning to me how massive these big airliners really are. It boggles the mind that they fly as they do.

For all those wondering what's the role of the propeller aircraft: it acts a the visual reference for DC-10 pilot. There's no better guide than a constant visual spot. The smoke signal from the propeller marks the spot where to begin the retardant drop and is essential for the pilot as the DC-10 is in a positive angle of attack and the pilot can't have any visual reference of the ground from the cockpit. The prop in guiding the DC-10 all the way through.

I had 2 fire fronts about 200m away my family had been evacuated but I stayed to battle the ember attacks😳.The fire had eased so I had a drink break🍻and heard a plane it sounded like it was low so I went out to video it for my 2-year-old who loves planes. I saw the first plane coming but I had no idea a DC10 was about to drop the retardant. I heard the roar of the jet I turned around and WOW it was awesome. Later the fire flared up again and burnt up to the retardant lines if it wasn’t for the skillful drop outside our fence line we may of lost our homes, The RFS Ground Crew & Air Crew really did “ Save The Day “ thank you RFS!!!!🇦🇺🔥🚒✈️🎖🇦🇺

I've lived in the Blue Mountains, Sydney Australia for 35 years and have been through 4 major bushfires (my own house was on national television in 1994 and you can check it by googling Blue Mountains wildfire). I've worked shoulder to shoulder with these amazing heroes. As an aircraft aficionado (two uncles flew in WW2 and were captains at KLM) it's insane to see this level of flying. Interesting to see the 'pilot' plane come through first and give a squirt of juice so the DC10 knows where to drop but that low level flying, in a big plane with undulating terrain, is a sight. I've also been up in a fire fighting helicopter with a pilot who's fought many fires and it was fascinating to listen to him talk about doing that kind of work and how dangerous it is...massive updrafts over a big fire that buffets a little chopper and then there's the smoke that inhibits visibility and obscures the terrain that they have to navigate. Very fine flying indeed and i know intimately how grateful I am to their skill and daring. Thank you.

Saw the same thing back in 2003 in Ramona, CA. The brush fires that ripped through San Diego county were seconds from destroying my lifelong home, when suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, the boray bombers came and snuffed that fire out just a few feet from my house. Nothing short of a miracle it was.
