No one thinks it's bad for the individual, quite the opposite actually many of us think WFH people have it to good. Exactly. So much office work could be done remotely, but middle management needs to feel important. I like the Valuetainment guys, but their perspective on remote work is a fucking joke. Remote work is one of the few ways, in recent times, that an average worker got ahead. Average workers tend to need to commute farther since they cannot afford to live close to their work place, generally. Remote work allowed people to live where they chose to, and make a decent living for their area. Sad.

This is exactly why work from home needs to be expanded and I'm not opposed to some government action in the form of tax breaks or something along those lines being put in place to encourage work from home. A significant number of these people commuting are working jobs that don't require them to be in the office and we could convert alot of the commercial real estate into residential properties which would also reduce housing costs. If your against work from home at this point I don't know what to say

My brother married a girl from New York in 2001 at her aunts beautiful large Pocono PA house. Both of them worked in Manhattan 100 miles away and commuted separately 4 hours each day. They said it was all worth it for their 2500sqft hilltop home compared to a 300sqft home in Manhattan of equal cost. I imagine it has gotten even worse in 22 years.

There have been people commuting from the Poconos to NYC since I-80 Delaware Water Gap section was completed in the early '70s. I did it daily from Mt. Pocono to Manhattan for five years in the early 90s. The four hour round trip got old quickly, and my car was worn out by the time I finished paying it off. The only thing that saved me was I worked overnight, 11PM-7AM, so no traffic and free parking.

Assuming they try to get 7 hours of sleep, that means they roughly had 4 hours to themselves Monday-Friday. Honestly, I'm taking the small Manhattan home and 20 hours of my life back each week over "enjoying" a nice house for 4 hours a night.

No one over there looks down on or snubs public transport the way Americans do here either, which may explain why it's also of significantly higher quality. Listening to Americans constantly complain & gripe about issues like this, while simultaneously doing absolutely NOTHING to help themselves, is getting old. Housing crisis and rents could be easily lowered. Government subsidies to mom and pop to convert their homes to multi-families to rent, pass a law where buying single family homes is only allowed by people who will live in the home, towns need to give out more building and housing permits. My commute got longer and longer until we had enough. Now I drive from 10 miles north of town, bypassing all that traffic, and get to work faster than ever. I used to drive 122 miles a day round trip at the beginning of my career, it ate over 2 hours of my day up. It was a smooth trip but was all 2 lane road since there was no direct highways. I now refuse to live further than 30 miles away from work, anything more than 45 min I get antsy.

so $74 a day in tolls/fees assuming 5 day work week, works out to $370 a week, $1480 a month, and $17760 a year. Thats not accounting for the lost time in travel, at that point take a job closer to home with a 15k paycut.

Everytime I as a customer deal with a work from home person I have ALWAYS heard their kids, dogs, wives in the background and or had constant issues hearing them because a crappy mic or speaker phone will never be as clear as in person talking. People want ridiculous pay to work in pj's on the couch. Amazing for you, terrible for the customer and for the employer

The US has imported on average 1,000,000+ legal immigrants annually since the 1990 Immigration Act was passed by Congress. What did people think was going to happen to housing availability, congestion, sprawl, pollution, green space, unstoppable warehouses, school budgets, utility costs, etc. ?

In the 90s I spent $160-$180 in fuel per week commuting to work for around 10 plus years. It was about an hour each way and this added a few hours to my work day. With the price of fuel nowadays it would be twice as expensive and a longer drive.
