On the heels of victory against Union armies at the Seven Days Battle and 2nd Manassas, General Robert E. Lee led his seemingly invincible army into Maryland. Lincoln turned to General George B. McClellan to lead a reorganized Army of the Potomac into the field to defeat Lee, a decision so controversial that it nearly dissolved the president's cabinet. In a daring operation, Lee's forces captured Harpers Ferry and its 12,000 man garrison - the largest capitulation of U.S. forces until World War II. The Army of the Potomac surprised Lee and defeated his forces in the Battle of South Mountain, forcing Lee to make a bold stand behind Antietam Creek, setting the stage for bloody Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. Mr. Hartwig presents a lecture focusing on Lincoln’s decision to restore McClellan to field command of the reorganized Army of the Potomac, and Lee's controversial decision to offer battle behind Antietam Creek.

I live in Downsville. A short march from Antietam. I live in a house that was a triage during the battle. I often wonder how many people died in the room I’m sitting in watching this video. I grew up in a house on what is nicknamed “hospital hill” in Williamsport, in the house that gave the hill the name. I also worked for the NPS C&O Canal for 4 years as a maintenance mechanic. This battle changed everything that we call our nation.

I beg to differ. Study the individual State Legislatures of the years from 1962 going into 1863. And what state Legislature did, even the local county records. Tells a different narrative. Edwin Stanton was a criminal.

This was excellent! My only complaint was that it ended too soon. I would like to have heard more. It sounds like his book examines many of the aspects of the Maryland campaign previously not explored. Definitely adding to my list of reads.

Any chance of getting Mr. Hartwig's slide set for my personal reference? I'm a new Battlefield Ambassador volunteer at Antietam. Otherwise, I'll just pause and screenshot the slides from the video.

So at @15:30 McClellan accuses himself of an illegal act, taking the army away from Washington in pursuit of Lee, going against his orders. But Mr. Hartwig says 'Oh no ya didn't', when at the same time he says there is much acrimony between McClellan and the politicians. hmm....Why then did McClellan say that then ?..... With all the bad feeling it sounds about right !

I beg to differ. Northeren States Legislatures records tell a different story and County records contributes to that States Narrative.

I noticed the age of the audience was much older. Young just are not interested in the American Civil War or history in general. Sad.

The dysfunction between civilian and military leadership doesn't really refute the "myth of the juggernaut" if you ask me. An army can be numerically superior and still fail due to bad leadership.

Guess you think it was all kumbaya within the confederacy? Jackson arrested AP Hill during this campaign. Lee’s orders fell into the unions hands and they still dropped the bullocks

Lincoln had a choice...the idea that only ONE guy in the ENTIRE army could run the show is silly

The artillery of The Army of The Potomac was superb, not sure that it has ever been equaled.These Armies and Generals were appointed by Fate to meet at this particular time of History! God bless them all. The flower of manhood of the entire nation were slain and maimed because of this war. We do not know half of the deprivations these brave soldiers of both sides suffered as a result. They will always be the greatest of Heroes. If I were AA I would be eternally grateful to them including Lincoln. They settled this huge matter in their generation, thereby sparing later ones. They had the energy, brains, means and organizational ability which has not been achieved since. The AA’s should by this time have elevated very high through education, so why do they allow commie gangs to riot and destroy their own communities for no good reason? The same evil influences that started this horrible war, and that started AA slavery are still in control and they are getting sucked in and carried along as pawns. It is “ the big dumbing down” of the U.S.A. No one is immune. The general vocabulary then was fifty times greater than now! If History is not studied and honored and remembered it can easily repeat itself! This was a wonderful lecture! I enjoyed listening very much. 🌺

The idea that Lee began this campaign with 70,000 men after heavy losses at Richmond and Manassas, left the sick and shoeless (5000), and then proceeded to lose 20,000 stragglers in short marches with rested troops over fertile country in fine weather, is nonsensical. All historians credit the Army of Northern Virginia with less than 60,000 at Bull Run.

Tom: Numbers that I've seen quote at the most 45,000 available at Antietam...
@kevin6293
@kevin6293 5 лет назад
Tom Tonkyro, Lee says that he had 60,000 at the beginning. He says he fought with 40,000 at Sharpsburg, after losing about 1/3 of his army by that time due to straggling, battle, etc. Lee fought with 3 more divisions at Antietam than he did at 2nd Bull Run. D. H. Hill, McLaws, and Walker.

Why has lincoln been buried 18 times? I'll provide a tombstone,it can read:" History has never surveyed a grave nobler than this. Here lie the bones of lincoln, so stop traveler,and piss."

Like I saw on Cspan,a kid holding up a poster board at a protest against the sitting monument of the tyrant and his brat in the capitol of the Confederacy in Richmond.It stated"Lincoln elected in 1860-not worth a cent then and not worth a cent now!" I thought that was pretty cool. DEO VINDICE- from Texas,a true son of the South

In many photos of the generals the hand is stuck into the shirt. Is this a masonic sign or are they trying to copy Napoleon?

This is not a good speech. He has endless excuses. Just a few examples: 1) Cohesion within the union army amongst its generals was bad. Well, it was bad within the south too. AP Hill was arrested by Jackson during this exact campaign. There are numerous more examples. 2) The size of the divisions were down. The US regulars size was at 48%. Boo hoo. Lee had about 40,000 men while the north had almost 90,000. Guarantee the south had divisions that were 50% full as well. 3) Cohesion between political and Union army was bad (this is part of what makes a great fighting force). This is like the south saying we had bad and outdated weapons/guns. We can’t not acknowledge this and use it as a factor in the overall success or failure of the south. But this dude wants us to say the north had bad relationships and if they relationships were better like they were in the southern army-outcome would have been different. No, not buying it. 4) Logistics. North required 1 million pounds of food a day. Hellur, the south starved. Yet, it’s not used as an excuse. There are things that plague militaries and these are things that make or break an army and define success or failure. And, there are counterpoints to each of this guys points.
