cause the purpose of schools is to train you to sit still, follow authorities and endure boring, repetitive tasks, that will prime you to be a working class cog under neo liberal capitalism. not to teach you important stuff.
Marco is a legend and such a nice dude. Got to cruise around Texas for a while when he was doing sugar sports back in the day. Let us hop in the van for some sessions. Detour tour with the homie Luke (RIP) Man the good old days full of the best memories. Rad to see him still killing it.
I'm glad there are more options between wheelbases and widths and that companies are getting better about mentioning them up front. However, it all should be based on personal preference of course since people have different proportions. Personally I'm starting to realize that I'm more consistent with tricks on a board with a longer wheel base. I'm never going back to 14.25 or below, but that's just me.
Happy you found your sweet spot on wheelbase. I think different body types can have different wheelbases and also for different terrains. The guy who owns the shop is wrong about long wheelbases though. Steve Cab & Alva just to name 2 ride longer wheelbases. Is he gonna tell them they are wrong for that? I get the short wheel bases for response and snap but some of us like the delay while skating tranny. It's just narrow minded to think one size fits all.
As a graphic designer, I love seeing the process of printing boards! I do have a strong preference for ink that is screen printed, rather than digitally printed… you can’t get the same level of detail, but the silk screened ink doesn’t flake off. I think it’s usually probably heat-transferred too, though, as Marko says here. It is funny how he claims that no skaters are involved in the design of skate1 boards. 😄 I’m sure plenty of skaters prefer the wider wheelbase, but it’s great to have options. I’m currently on an 8.5” real SE, and it feels great. I do think it’s also a 14.25 wheelbase.
I like my board longer tbh. I have a wide stance and big ass feet. So the blue meanie antihero I ride is perfect. It's less responsive so I can actually control my flip tricks as well.
I don't totally agree with the wheel base thing. Before i hate longer wheelbase over 14.25 but i try some board at 14.375 and up and i really love them. The thing was that the finger of flat and the kicks was perfect and it makes it really easy to do a treflip with like 14.5 and Venture trucks. So if the board have no finger of flat and steep kicks everything is harder even with a shorter wheelbase. At the end is just personal preference and is good to have a lot of different specs for all size of people, for me eveything under 32 inch long and 8.25 look tiny now i just ride 8.5 and up and i always try to not have a wheel base under 14.375.
hes so focused on the past its sad i dont listen to people like him because they like to talk people out of their comfort zone if i want a 15 in wheel base thats what i want i dont want a 14.25 wheelbase because you tell me its good. same with the flight deck a flight deck is durable thats what matters not the sound if it sound soggy let it sound soggy at least my board wont break
I like riding shorter boards. I have a Powell peralta Mike v re issue. It’s 9.85 width but it’s 30” long 15” wheel base, . My cousin has a 9.5 that feels like it’s 10 feet long . But he had a 8.5 that was stubbier, I loved it. I don’t feel comfy on a long deck. 31.25 is the longest I’ll fuck with now . Maybe 31.5 haha theres my current board at 5:24 below the tv above the door frame 🤙
Really appreciate the heat transfer BTS, but seems like he really misunderstands wheelbase. A wider board MAY be longer, if the wheelbase is intentionally greater so the ride is more stable. It's not simply a result of a maker in China not understanding skating. Plenty of wider boards are available with 'normal' wheelbase: Girl's couch shape and some of Polar's wider shapes are a few. Also, the longer board he's using as an example of a maker not knowing what they're doing is a Skate One (Powell) deck. They purposely make a variety of width/length/wheelbase combinations... Thumbs up for his passion but thumbs down for the scrambled logic.
When I was younger I wanted a silk screen setup so bad and now apparently it's junk. They tried to say the same thing about vx footage but it's still here
I personally hate a 14.25 wheel base. I normally ride a 8.6 14.5-14.625wb. I’ve tried boards as small as an 8-8.5 and the longer boards just feel more natural for me, not sure why. I am also 5’9 so I dont think it really has much to do with height either.
Its crazy watchin this and thinkin back like oh this board feels weird like your pop changes. When he held them side buy side like you really see it. Crszy shit. I remember skatin Real. both I liked either 8.125 or 8.25. Real boards had a dope shape in those sizes 8.38 to
Na bro, 14.25 is to small! I have 8 inch decks with 14.4 wheelbase! I agree I don't like 33 inch decks, but I ride an 8.75 that's 32.5 with a 14.6 wheelbase!
Personally (I'm 6 foot 3) a 14.25 wheelbase can feel a bit short for me. 14.375 is my favorite WB Over a 14.5 and it starts to feel like one of those goofy long decks, the Gonz skates.
Facts it’s hard to find 8.5 with 14”wb and the deck can’t be longer then 31.5 that’s my perfect set up I had a curb crusher from anti hero it was perfect dimension went to find another no luck but found a Santa Cruz jake Wooten deck Sam dimensions 8.5 14”wb 31.5 long the struggle is real lol
Damm where they make the longer 8.75s they better not stop making those. I’m tired of everything being for midgets 5’5 and under. Now they making shit for the big boys but still catered to the tiny ppl wtf. If there was a longer wheel base board than 14 that would be a fuckin miracle
I'm not sure it's fair to attribute the death of vert skating to Rocco either. That was already happening before he started his company I think. From what I remember, he didn't start that until the 90s and street skating was already becoming a thing in the mid-80s.
Dude doesn't know much if he thinks some random factory boss picks a bigger wheelbase for a wider board. And 8.25 wb isn't standard on 8.5 wide deck,. 8.38 is. I think George Powell, Professor Scmitt and pretty much every skate brand has a larger wheelbase as board size goes up! Numpty!
It does matter when your doin flip trick now a days people like to have wider board for easier landing more room but the bigger you go up the wb gets longer 14.5 and up is normal for 8.5 and up so when u can get a 8.5 or bigger but with same dimensions as a littler deck like 8” it’s a game changer
I like longer 8.75 boards for transition parks and I’m also 6’ tall so it feels comfortable. Regular wheelbase 8.5 boards feel small to me now. I still keep a 8.5 around when I skate flat ground at home.
yea man, there's something about the 8.75 that feels like riding a luxury vehicle, better steering and balance, especially being tall. I used to be short asf when i was 17 or 18, which i found skating a lot easier.
I get what yall are saying about the nostalgia of riding a wood board and the sound and feel it has over time. But as someone who isn't getting free boards the amount of time I can comfortably skate a flight deck is not even close to a regular deck. I usally tail snap a wood board around a month or so in. Have yet toi have a flight deck need to be replaced for any other reason than razortail.
Right now I’m skating the bailgun Gary board. 9.75 symmetrical shape. Short wheel base so I can do flip tricks and still slap the curbs. I need those tensors though! You should skate the Mexican coke graphic first!
I thought it was just me. I've been out of the game for over 15 years. Want to get back into street skating, but every deck i've tried has felt too long and now i'm learning about the importance of the wheel base and how that could be a factor. I just checked the deck i have and it's 14.75. I think i need to do a bit more experimenting and not just focus on width. I think a shorter deck, with a shorter wheel base would be ideal, as i remember i used to skate my best when i had worn down the nose and tail of a board.
No no no, dont put short wheel bases for wider boards into peoples heads. FOR FUCKS SAKE IVE BEEN WAITING 15 years for decks that are atleast 33” long with 15” wheel bases. Tall skaters KNOW. The big boards are for us big dudes. PLEASE do not spread mis info.
I just stepped up to a 9.0 welcome deck and just a 1/4" difference in the wheelbase is very noticeable at 14.5". I couldn't imagine a 15" wheelbase that would be so hard to skate.
Bro your like inspector morse getting us closer to the truth of skating here. I never knew this stuff.. the sacred geometry of skateboarding! This just gets radder, HAVE YOU SEEN HIM
Shaped decks are very functional boards too though, even in the streets... And we had more or less symmetrical boards in the early days of freestyle skating. Earlier boards even still were kind of popsicle shaped. Do I think the 'modern' popsicle shape is optimal? Well, who even really knows. I guess to some extent it's a 'best of both worlds' thing. But I really do like plenty of shaped decks and never considered them inferior at all. Heck, even plenty of pro skaters ride shaped decks anyway.
