The new Labour government plans to end BBC licence fee prosecutions, which disproportionately affect women. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy and Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood agree that failing to pay the £169.50 fee should no longer be a criminal offense.
Currently, nearly 1,000 people are prosecuted weekly, with over two-thirds being women. A senior government source told The Times that enforcing the fee isn’t worth the administrative burden on taxpayers.
