Never understand why talk radio begrudge the working man a pay rise. How much was your pay rise Ian this year. In fact last 5 years. Any chance on telling us? No...didn't think so
Reminds me of the union guy who was seen to be writhing in agony. When asked what was wrong he said he was fine but was desperate to go to the toilet. He refused to go to the toilet in his own time so explained he'd go just as soon as he'd finished his lunch break!
Never laughed so much for ages. Mockery is always the best way to confront the wholesale idiocy of union leaders, managers and politicians. Thank you Ian!😂😂😂
As a police officer, I lost count of the number of times our meal breaks were curtailed or even non-existant. If they had the same working practices in the police, then we would never have attended anything. But the police are prohibited from striking by statute of course - which, from the public's point of view, is probably a good thing.
They getting higher standards arguably lifts the bar for everyone. Besides you can change job/career you know, it's not like the dystopian Hunger Games where you're designated a non-immutable 'function'.
@@nicksloan8860 I have just checked - train drivers are now on more money than Police Chief Inspectors. I wonder how they feel about that in the British Transport Police.
@@davidsmith8728 not fussed how they feel to be honest. If they feel underpaid then they should leave and become a train driver. Plenty of them already have, it's not difficult
Heavily subsidised food and drink(very expensive stuff, not pie n mash)Can't remember what they receive for just signing into the commons, think about £300 not sure. There was a scandal some time back about MPs signing in and bunking off like schoolkids.
Hahaha as a train driver for many years and someone fairly centrist is can tell you that’s not what happens lol firstly managers don’t just come for a word because they’re incredibly lazy and rather egotistical they call you to their office and that’s usually a 5-10 minute trek there and the same back , by the time you’ve finished all of you’re pnb gone and it’s their rule you have you’re 30mins pnb as you could be driving solidly for the next 5hrs 10 mins , without any break ! There’s no option to pull over or goto a services like you’re on the motorway , the passengers would be very angry if you need a toilet break and stop the train , also remember we generally work very unsociable hours , I started at 0325 and 0345 last week , and we also drink copious amounts of tea in our short breaks as does any British worker , so if you’re critical of our break times please bear in mind when you next do a 4or 5 hour motorway drive that we do these every work day on our trains sometimes twice a day with a break inbetween we can start at 0300 onwards and work a 10hr intensive shift ! Plus we’re not earning this magical figure banded about the press , so maybe go and attack the politicians they’re the real shirkers
Surely they’re cancelled or late because the government can’t organise the rail industry and you think the workforce should pay for this ? Let me tell you sunshine you think it’s inconvenient that trains are late well I’m the one finishing work late we also queue up trying to go on the depot because we don’t have enough infrastructure for the amount of trains and services so nearly every late shift were late off duty , the railways are an absolute mess , we haven’t had a pay rise for nearly 6 years !!!! And you want to hold us responsible for the mess the very people that constantly told us we’re worthless employees caused , imagine you’re own workplace becoming so toxic that the government , the public and the managers blame the staff for everything that’s gone wrong when the workforce has absolutely no say in any of it , we just drive the trains it’s upto others who do their job very badly to organise the railway
@@christopherwright1795 in any other industry that fails as much as the rails nobody would be getting a pay rise and people would be getting p45s. You are right though the rails are a mess. Infrastructure should be sorted first. How anybody can think a train driver is worth more than a nurse or most of our armed forces is a fucking joke
@@ScousePrepper everybody can’t keep being compared to a nurse ! This presenter will be on a lot more than a nurse ? Many people earn more than nurses , if everybody had their salary based on a nurse’s salary society would collapse , nurses get paid too little , that’s a fact but you can’t hold the salary of the whole workforce of Britain hostage to get nurses better pay
@@RickGhastly-ty8cq you might be surprised to see how few members show up at branch meetings. Of course the Tories will tell you it's political. Union bashing is their thing.
Give them all extra money . 50 percent is fine . Im going to have a back pain or mental health issues as i want some of this free cash . Benefits is fine with me as i never had any before and now fed up paying taxes for other peoples high pay packets
Aslef got 14% and still going on strike every weekend for 3 months 😮border force going on strike , who’s next teachers , bin men we know it’s all coming lol once you pay one the others want the same rise 🙄
I would like to know what is so special about a train driver that he commands a large salary. He doesn't have to steer the thing, he reads signals, he follows speed restrictions and is able to stop and start. If I have missed anything I would love to know.
Lmao!!! Have you ever tried driving one? Seriously, your comment snacks of ignorance. Why do they then have to train for the position for 2 years?! Plus rules, etc.....have you looked inside a train cab? Have you seen what they have to operate?....it's not as cut and dried as no stertingvwrel and reading signals, trust me!!
This doesn`t surprise me in the least and is one of the reasons why we have the most expensive rail journeys in Europe. A few days ago when the Govt caved in and offered ASLEF members a big pay rise after many months of strikes I predicted they would soon be calling more strikes. How right I was, they have done it already. Thanks to increasing automation and more safety devices train drivers`jobs are getting easier with less to do but they command eye watering salaries yet want ever more.
The right to start your break if you get spoken to by a manger is getting totally taken out of all proportion. The agreement is that if a manager wants to speak to you about work related issues or wanting a report of an incident that has happened urgently etc, you can start your break again. This is due to safety that a driver has had there full allocated time to eat and rest before being responsible for people’s lives and multi million pound equipment,It has nothing to do with a manager just saying “Hello” and just asking are you having a good day etc.The microwave issue I’ve never heard of. Certainly not common practice for any train drivers I know of and work with. Unfortunately as we have seen to recently online posts give false information.
Similar to HGV drivers with specified break periods and weekly driving allowance.Although I do believe some aslef members interpret the rules in a detrimental way.
The trains are ever more pricing themselves out of the market-I stopped even thinking of going anywhere by train years ago,as the cost of tickets became ever more ludicrous. What's so bloody special about being a train driver that warrants the obscene salary they get-nothing as far as I can see?
Maybe you should become a train driver. I assume you arent special either so you'd fit right in. Also, you get the decent salary and free train travel. So you wont have to worry about the cost of travelling on the trains anymore 😊
It's called a protected lunch break. It stops management from talking to you about work while you are on your break and microwaves leak so anyone who works near them should get checked.
I’ve been a train driver for 22 years and never once has a colleague or myself asked for a medical check after using a microwave, or restarting a break because a manager spoke to us. But never let the truth get in the way of a good story! Lies make the best headlines, the truth is boring.
If it wasn't in the contract they would not have any idea of this idiocy. You may not have taken advantage of these particular terms but I bet you take advantage of many of the others. There are dozens of these so called spanish practices detailed. You really couldn't make it up.
You and your colleagues may not of taken advantage of this crazy rule however it's there to be used if you so wish! That is what he's talking about. There's no lies in what he says, so why lie saying that he is lying?
Since the 90’s the railways have been in private hands, I always hear and read that services run by the private sector is better than the public sector. So if these Spanish practices are so wrong why did not the private rail companies do something about it.
People need to be left in peace while on breaks, when their breaks are hounded they are not breaks, I dont see a problem there are some companies have real problems with lunatic management who get god complexes, look at the labour party now for example. I myself have worked for a company who would only have meetings in staff lunch times so they didnt slow production and some that have employed some real draconian measures to long to list.
Talk tv :- you know I’ve watched you’re channel but this is absolute tosh and you know it , the things you’ll put out for viewing figures , makes me not believe any other news articles you rant about
I work in a supermarket...my break starts when I sit down. Like everyone else.disturbed breaks have happened a few times when I've had to let a wagon in at the back door. I just restart my break later on and managers are fine with it. With regards to managers speaking to us on breaks we're quite a good working team so it ain't a problem. There's boundries of course ie not giving orders out in canteen etc It's all about a good working environment...I'm only on £12 per hour and honestly for what I do it's a piece of pi55. 21k a year and I'm pretty happy in my work...I get the impression some on 50k a year just hate their lives.
Reminds me of a Labour MP many years ago discussing the strikes in the car industry. Union official came to the workers and said right boys the Management have offered us a 20% increase in salary, 7 weeks holiday a year, double overtime rates and working just on Wednesdays. A voice from the back said - what EVERY Wednesday.
@@AgnesFay-k5c No entry qualification, but a very long recruitment process with many tests to pass. It’s around 18 months training to be able to drive on Network Rail infrastructure, and that 18 months training is full on with exams needing to passed through the course.
The rail drivers union has always ruled the drivers with a rod of iron. Their is no leeway and no allowance for modernity. I am a qualified person held a responsible job am a railway enthusiast. Had i known the level of pay compared to my semi itinerant job i would have been far better off. For the job a driver does they are overpaid. I could do a drivers job with training but question whether a driver could have completed my training.
What a load of bollox. If you have building works or alarms that mess up a rest break you could ask for a spoilt break. It is never used, but do you want an individual to have some food before they continue 4 or 5hrs. Do you want them eating whilst driving. Can't just stop and pull over. As usual completely out of context to make people angry
You need to check what you are quoting. Train drivers have to have allocated brakes just as lorry drivers. If a manager wants to speak to a driver on work related issues, it will interpret that legally required Physical Needs Break, before they go back to driving hundreds of people around the country at speeds up to 125mph. As this is false information, will Talk TV be fined under the communication act??
The right to restart break when it is interrupted by bosses IS a law in certain countries. Not all bosses interrupt breaks and not all employees take advantage of this law. Point is lunch breaks ARE UNPAID, so by interruption bosses interfere with employees' private time. Condition: THE INTERRUPTION HAS TO DO WITH WORK.
Biggest problem with Socialism when you have too many government workers and unions who work hand in hand with the Labour Party get the best benefits and wage increases off the backs of hard paying taxpayers.
You have only just scraped the surface of these practices. An extra 10 minutes walking time for your coffee break to get from your train to the cafeteria and back despite the fact that the cafeteria is 3 yards from the train, waiting time payment for you to wait in line to get your wages from the office in cash despite the fact that all employees are now paid by BACS, 15 mins start up time for the train so you have time to stoke up the fire in the engine despite the fact that all trains are diesel and all you need to do is turn a key, and so it goes on aand all these things require an extran payment into your salary. These people are paid about £70,000 plus overtime, plus extra payments for this that and the other for a 4 day week. Many could be into 6 figure sums for what. To press a button for an hour or two, have a lengthy break and do it again. Inflation will rocket again because of these selfish people but they will be all right won't they. You see, they will all be out on strike again this time next year ready to blackmail the Govt into giving them a 20% pay rise again and the Govt. will give in.
Sorry, totally incorrect information and I'm sure my family members would love " walking time " to get anywhere on their 12 hour shifts, much appreciated response!
When I was a nurse and on a break, if someone buzzed and everyone was busy we went and answered it. We did whatever needed done and went back to our lunch/dinner. No extended breaks for us.

I've never been on a train since I had a railway warrant from the Army ,I just can't afford their over the top prices. Even with prices at the pump and tax insurance , it's cheaper by car, especially if there are 4 of you. I thought that stagecoach ariva and the likes were private companies.
Would love to know how a driver has a lunch break whilst he or she is in the cab driving. The problem is they don’t even have time for a piss. Unlike journalists in a TV studio
Well said , we can drive for 4-5 hrs have a 30min pnb then drive again till the end of our shift , toilet breaks , where ? My doctor has told me I need to actually goto the loo and have a wee when I need too otherwise I’ll cause irreparable damage to my renal system , how can I do this , stop the train ?
@@deanrogers8381yes one or two per 10hr shift it’s a main 30min pnb then a 10mins needs break if the shift is over a certain length we can’t chose our breaks though and sometimes they’re at very unsocialable hours when you’d rather have the break half way through you’re shift or dinner time , that’s not possible you’re usually driving a train at you’re preferred break time
No, not akways, if a train is delayed they cannot , unfortunately, take the time to extend a break. If the delay has eaten that particular break up they have to suck it up and carry on. Before anyone else comments in response, the delay can be due to signal failures, public on the line or worse, a fatality.
@@brib4885no they don’t ! They have their break , they don’t suck it up at all , I’ve been a train driver for a long time ! Breaks are essential and are taken ! Train late or not as the driver could then be driving for 5hrs

How about I get an uninterrupted break? Professional drivers have this right not to answer the phone during their break. Taking a work phone call during a 45 minute break would have driving standards on you.
Hi, I was in unions all my life in Canada. What you are talking about is probably favoritism and nepotism. This is when obvious incompetents get into the management positions. If a union can be totally unreasonable it is because management does not know how to rectify core issues. I think a lot of favoritism is on both sides and I would not doubt that a lot of management and union workers are friends. If not directly related. In my opinion the whole management team should be dismissed. Then people who know how to run a company get put in charge. I also think opportunities to fire employees that deserve it are not taken.
In hgv its the same if you get contacted by the transport on your day off you can start again hence they don't ring you . So don't interrupted there breaks . Simple . How would you like it if you are off the job having lunch and the boss interrupted you food
Please tell me you are joking ? You obviously haven't done your research. While your talking to a camera in a air conditioned office, drinking coffee and talking about how many emails you have typed up today, lol
It's orange hi viz , that is not talking to management, try going along to the local rail company, see if you can do a ride along with a driver. .. you are being facetious. Well the microwave was a serious risk ?
I read the other day if all these pay rises are given we could end up with inflation of between 20% - 25% ; like the 1970s when pay rises were given. p.s Train drivers and office civil servants got paid to sit at home not working during covid!!!
Don't worry the newspaper that you read that in is owned by a tax avoiding billionaire. They only said that because if working people are kept fighting amongst themselves, then the billionaires can keep hoarding all our wealth uninterrupted.
Being a Train Driver is a highly skilled profession and the staff don't control the Unions. Id like to know where this misinformed person has obtained his misinformation from, whether it's applicable across the UK as a whole or just down South and if ANY train company has EVER implemented this because it's not in the rule books! I am sick of the nay sayers and the propaganda surrounding this industry.....get your facts correct before you spout your rubbish.
Couldn't agree more, as a wife of a railway worker I'd like to know where he gets his misinformation from and when this actually was in the rule book also is it across the country or just " down sarf" ....
If you are going to discuss agreements do it correctly and realisticly. Your channel well certainly this presenter is no more than a tabloid presenter. I wonder if you would like to tell the people how many payrises you have received since 2018, how much they were % wise and how much you earn sitting infront of a camera.
That's what happens when people vote for Labour. I worked hard st school and got into University. My parents were so encouraging. I found a good starter job and worked my way up. A healthy employer/employee relationship is one of give and take. To have a 3rd party come in and demolish one side is pathetic and deliberate. The Labour Party is sending out a message to young people. You don't have to work hard and you are always right. It has never worked before, so it's not going to work now. It will lead to another critical financial collapse, worse than any we have seen before. Once again the unemployment rate will push the country into chaos.
You’re talking absolute nonsense! If it weren’t for the labour party, workers would still be doffing their caps and begging for a days work to feed their emaciated children. God bless Kier Hardy.
Atta bullshit. I’m a train driver been one for 20 years and we only get 15 to 30 minute break then we’re back out so if the manager calls us and interrupts our PNB which is very important for the rest of the recuperation to drive the train after we were allowed to claim their minutes back, we’re not allowed to claim back so stop chatting bullshit And 99 times out of 100 it’s just a quick chat and no one reclaim their minutes
