Thanks Sue! I think the answer to your first question is to make the thinset "thin". You've already seen your bird or whatever when it was in the putty and you can change any mistakes then. It's really pretty straitforward. One gross thing is rabbit skin glue. Definitely only use that in open air. I hope this helps--if not, anyone else please feel free to pip in with another answer.

@@carolbowen2024 thanks so much for your reply. It looks like she thoroughly butters the back of the piece and then puts a thin scratch coat down in the box. I guess you don’t press it down too much once you lay it in the box, is that it? In my mind I’ve got all that adhesive squeezing up to the top of the interstices. But does that not happen?

Hi Carlos---Rabbit Skin Glue. It smells really bad, so I recommend you use it outdoors.

I'm glad that you like the video! I, too, love mosaics. The type of glass used in this video is called smalti. Molten glass is poured into a blob. Then the blob is flattened so it's like a thick pizza. When the glass pancake cools it is sliced into the rectangular forms you see me using in the video. You can also buy the glass in pizza form which gives you the option of cutting different sizes. Interestingly, it is the inner cut sides (the riven edge) that are supposed to show in the mosaic. The insides are a bit different in color from the outer edges (the part that's like a crust). I visited Orsoni in Venice, a historic glass furnace that makes smalti. I was able to film the smalti making process. I think you might enjoy that video, as you will see the different steps and learn about this historic glass furnace. I'm sorry that conditions are not favorable for your work in Lebanon. I believe it is difficult to work as a mosaicist in most parts of the world because there are not many mosaic studios doing this work. I love mosaics, but I do not work in the mosaic art field. I filmed this video when I attended a class at the Mosaic Art School in Ravenna, Italy. There, one may study the ancient techniques of making a mosaic, using authentic materials and techniques. Hi Elis, there is not a simple answer to your question. I suggest you watch some youtube videos that introduce the mosaic medium. There are so many possible materials to choose from. If you do not have many materials, you can always make a paper mosaic with colors cut from magazine images and glue. I have a paper mosaic series of videos on my channel--I use them for my students, but I will make it public so you can see how to do this.
