Cher's image is so strong (eg the videos, her outfits, her swag, her looks, her extremely quotable interviews etc etc ) that it's good when sometimes you just get her jamming out with an acoustic guitarist. Because her voice really is special. And instantly recognisable

Holy crap...I was thinking the exact same thing just now on another video of hers and was almost about to stop the video and make that comment, but it was too late. Then next up I see your comment. Life's weird conincidences...or maybe the majority of people feel the same way. I mean, this is what I thought from the get-go. I still haven't decided. Which probably means that I like her. I don't like X-Factor, but I think the Mockingbird / Sorry seems to be the hardest word mash-up was pure genius.

It's a shame song writers give their songs to people who they know can make them the most money, if they took a chance on other artists we might have different styles of music rather than over produced pop songs like the original

your point is invalid in this situation. Katy wrote this song. She is the one who had the idea after hearing the beat. She does not make over produced songs. its part if the effects, e.g look at the music video. that's the reasons for covers like these.

Maybe not. As an artist, it's a great feeling when you've inspired someone else to cover your song, especially since Cher gave it a different spin. Plus, it would have also been nerve wracking for Cher, knowing that Katy would be watching!
