As part of the retirement ceremony for the R32 subway car, they made final runs in December 2021 and January 2022 as part of a series of farewell trips organized by the New York Transit Museum on four consecutive Sundays. On the final day, January 9, 2022, the train ran along the IND Second Avenue Line, BMT Broadway Line, and BMT Brighton Line between 96th Street and Brighton Beach. This is very historically significant, as it was the line that the cars first ran on when they debuted in 1964. Enjoy this comprehensive look at the operation!

Some of the most memorably dreamy rides in the NYC Subways is on the R40 "slantface" cars, and we'd ride them btwn two connected R40 slants like a huge open-air convertible, particularly on the 'A' train, in the summer, it was just a the most glorious of all Subway rides... until some policeman tells everyone to go inside... ...and the R32s always struck me as "faster Subway cars", probably bcuz of the psycho-visual effect of those long and shiny corrugated lines in either direction of travel, and those zippy-lookin' 'TA' roundels... and those incandescent light bulbs zipping-by ever so quickly as the rail-noise picks up in those curiously dark tunnels that takes us to who-knows-where... and after hitting "top-speed", I think the motorman lets off the throttle, and you'd get the sensation that the Subway cars "float" down the rails ... which is like all those old Subway cars I grew up with.

I miss the R40 Slants the most out of all retired cars. Simply the coolest.
@russellgxy2905

Interesting fact about that last part. The first few R32's actually did "float" on the track a little. Despite being stainless steel, the carbodies were actually lighter on the springs compared to the carbon steel cars like the Arnines. So the early '32's sat a little bit taller on the track and ended up clipping some tunnels. I think they added something to the underbody to get them to sit lower, and that probably helped with their acceleration too! But yeah, the R32's were my first introduction to fluted stainless steel cars and I've pretty much associated them with speed ever since. Heck, when I used to live neat the J and Z, I thought the "Ruffles" were _newer_ than the R42's even though they were half a decade older. Honestly, at this point I'm just waiting for a pair of them to be added to the Train Of Many Metals to see how they line up next to the older Budd R11 and the St. Louis "copy" R38.

I am very happy I was able to be there for the final day, it was a great way to give a fond farewell to the wonderful R32 trains. They have been through a lot, are a part of history, are strong, and they still look and feel wonderful with their interior and exterior, especially with the fluted metal, and their speed. They were iconic, a mainstay and a symbol of the subway, and they were my favorite MTA train because of all of that, as well as all of the great memories I have riding these trains over the years. Thank you for all of the great years of service and good-bye dear train.

I miss this Route so much I’am not happy when it had retired. When I first took this route the R32, it was in great shape from the beginning when it was running fast starting with the Local & then it became the Express. Back in 1970’s it was on the G Train, F Train, N Train and the list of trains go on. Now that it’s not running anymore and remain to rest, I’m not happy and still sad and I feel like I want to cry 😢😢

Thanks for sharing this footage on the last run of the R-32 trains. I was unable to make the last runs because of circumstances that were beyond my control. The one that hurt the worst was when I was about to leave from my hometown Pittsburgh, PA, a bad snowstorm on the PA Turnpike delayed all the Greyhound buses for hours when I was leaving for New York on Sunday morning. I do have some video and still shots from past visits; that's a good enough consolation for now. I hope I get to ride any remaining R-32's on fan trips and any nostalgia rides. Thanks again.

What a fun and amazing, if not bittersweet four Sundays. It was great to see and ride them one last time but we all knew the 32s final day in service was going to come. I'm hoping to see four more 32s preserved to go with 3350 through 3353--the better for the 32s to be able to run in their own set on the Parade of Trains just because they came about as the first production run stainless steel cars for B Division and occupy a significant spot in NYCMTA history as a result. I can't wait to see them again in a future event--be they as part of the Train of Many Metals or as their own set in the Parade of Trains. Thanks to eveyone who sacrificed anything and everything to make the R32 Final Runs possible.

THE R32 CARS WERE THE ABSOLUTE BEST HANDLING CARS IN THE SUBWAY, ESPECIALLY THE SMOOTHEST BRAKING. A MOTORMAN COULD STOP AN R32 AND YOU MIGHT NOT FEEL THE SLIGHTEST BUMP. I OPERATED ALL TRAINS IN THE MUSEUM AND R32 CARS BEAT ALL. I OPERATED "Q" CARS A COUPLE OF TIMES ON THE MYRTLE LINE TO JAY ST. THEY WERE THE WORST DUE TO OLD TECH. THE R44 CARS WERE THE WORST NIGHTMARE. NO ONE ESPECIALLY CAR EQUIPMENT KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT THEM & THEY BROKE DOWN ALL OVER THE SUBWAY. SO MANY CRACKED UNDERCARRIAGES THAT ALL R44 CARS ON LINES A, D, E, & F HAD TO BE TAKEN OUT OF SERVICE. LUCKILY FOR THE PEOPLE, THE SCRAP DEALER DID NOT DESTROY THE R9 CARS. TRANSIT HAD TO RENT THEM BACK FROM SCRAP DEALER. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A "CLOWN SHOW" IF THE ENTIRE CITY WASN'T ALREADY COLLAPSING. I WAS 24 THEN, NOW I AND OTHERS HAVE SOME LIVING HISTORY OF THE SUBWAY & NEW YORK CITY 1960s TO ,1990s TO TELL.
