Here we see a retired train of R17s, R21s, and R22s that were previously used to transport continuous welded rail being transferred to 38th Street Yard in preparation to be removed from MTA property. These specific cars have not moved on any mainline subway system trackage in over 10 years! Enjoy!

Wow. The state of those cars tell the tale of cars that have given their all and can't give anymore. Gotta look up what examples of the R17, R21, and R22 survive as part of any sort of preservation effort--be it for the NYTM or otherwise. (Safe to say A Division isn't my forte--had much more experience with B Division as I mainly grew up taking B Division lines.)

I'm pretty sure they're rider cars for work crews, but not too sure why it's positioned between the two engines. Only thing I can think of is that they keep them coupled to an engine so when they pull the various work trains, they save time coupling an extra car on.

I'll never understand why subway cars that still work are still scrapped. Even though these cars look a mess they could be fixed up return to service. Even the R40 slants where scrapped. Which I no doubt believe it was because workers in the body shops just didn't want to work on them. Even now. They have put.a R32 set of cars back in service. On the A line because of shortage of R211 cars. The Mta wastes a lot of money for nothing. The redbirds had another 10 years at least of working. Yet they where scrapped. As I have seen. Old cars was always put back in service. These cars haven't been used in ,10 plus years. Yet the Mta is just throwing them out. A waste it seems.
@davidng2336
@davidng2336 Год назад
Because they are OLD. They break down MORE. And it costs A LOT than to buy new equipment. These cars were LONG OOS ever since the new welded rail cars arrived. And also, why keep surplus when you have cars that WORK FINE? The R32s broke down THE MOST during their last years. They were unbearable because the AC FAILED. Therefore, when the R160s and R179s arrive, they were NOT needed anymore. Neither were the R40s and Redbirds needed anymore when the R160s and R142/As arrived. That’s why they’re gone, because their time was up. That’s why they became reefs or scrapped. Because they are OLD. They break down MORE. And it costs A LOT than to buy new equipment. These cars were LONG OOS ever since the new welded rail cars arrived. And also, why keep surplus when you have cars that WORK FINE? The R32s broke down THE MOST during their last years. That’s why they became reefs or scrapped. The Redbirds didn’t have ten years remaining, they had little to none. And idk where you’re getting the R32s re-entering service to replace the R211s. The R211s DID NOT FAIL. The R32s DID NOT REENTER SERVICE FOR THE R211s. ONLY the R179s. And ever since the R179s re-entered service, and the R32s final run, the Brightliners NEVER RAN AGAIN. The only times we saw them again were STRICTLY museum train runs. The MTA doesn’t waste money on nothing, they put money into new equipment that WILL WORK better than the old. The R211s are done with the 30-day test. MANY more are on their way. There won’t be a shortage when the total number of cars will eventually be 1,612. They are a HUGE improvement over the old fleet. And therefore, except for museum runs, you will NEVER see retired cars run again UNLESS absolutely needed, which means with the success of the R211 so far, it’s VERY unlikely. So let the MTA do what they want. We know what’s smart, and we know what isn’t. And new equipment IS NOT DUMB!
