I walk through NYC in the Bronx on Fordham Road from Jerome Avenue to Pelham Parkway.
From Wikipedia:
"Fordham Road is a major thoroughfare in the Bronx, New York City, that runs west-east from the Harlem River to Bronx Park. Fordham Road houses the borough's largest and most diverse shopping district. It geographically separates the North Bronx from the South Bronx.
This street runs through the neighborhood of University Heights, divides Fordham from Fordham-Bedford and finally runs along the northern border of Belmont. It begins at its eastern point as a continuation of Pelham Parkway and at its western point continues over the University Heights Bridge into Manhattan, where it runs as West 207th Street. It is a two-way, four-lane road. East of Webster Avenue Fordham Road runs concurrent with U.S. Route 1 from Webster Avenue to Boston Road. Fordham Road is divided into East Fordham Road and West Fordham Road by Jerome Avenue following after the Manhattan grid, with address numbers for both the East Fordham Road and West Fordham Road increasing away from Jerome Avenue.
Fordham Road is under the management of the Fordham Road Business Improvement District, a non-profit organization under contract with the City of New York. The BID maintains, develops, and markets the merchants along Fordham Road and hosts many community events throughout the year."

as a kid in the late 70's early 80's from australia, the bronx had a huge influence on me from seeing the movie the warriors and the breakdance hip hops days like music from beat street, electric boogaloo etc......i gotta get to the bronx before i get old. love it.

I get the whole music and dance aspect. Believe me it was a fun time as hip hop and break dancing by blacks and Puerto Rican seemed to be dominating the landscape..lol....I Remembered being in school and watch break dance “battles “ almost daily. Fun times...You’d be surprised, the Bronx is a huge borough. There is history of Dutch, Native American and early colonial periods there to see. Some parts are not even recognizable to what folks who don’t live there and (even some that do) consider to be the Bronx. I would say yes there are high crime areas and there are areas you can raise a family....if you can afford housing and tax costs....🤔 I was raised in the west Bronx area. It was predominantly an Irish neighborhood (as an Australian you can appreciate that😁) with many Jewish, Greek and some Cubans and Puerto Ricans. Now those groups are dwindling and it’s becoming very crowded with Dominican and middle eastern immigrants. I would say it’s an interesting place to visit and if you get a good guide to take you around with great knowledge you’d enjoy it. But with caution I’d say crime is prevalent in some areas and from what I see what’s going on with the NYC government “management style” let’s say, I’d probably stay away.

I grew up in the Bronx. Fordham was a shopping hub for the Bronx. Alexander’s was the main store and there were loads of small businesses (not chains). There were good shoe stores, handbag stores and if you wanted designer clothes you went to Loehmans. There was a really good yarn store too and Jahn’s Ice Cream Parlor. They’re was also a big Army Navy store that we went to for jeans, corduroys, blue work shirts, painters pants and overalls ( it was the 70’s). I loved the Zoo. I volunteered there and at the Botanical Garden when I was in high school. There was a Howard Johnson’s near the Zoo that had an all you could eat fish fry on Fridays. I remember at Pelham Parkway there was a Chock Full-o-Nuts coffee shop on the corner where you got the subway. They served their famous date nut bread cream cheese sandwiches. I liked their whole wheat donuts. My cousin had a kosher Deli on Leydig Ave. There was also a good Jewish bakery. I also remember a small store that sold ladies undergarments. My mother bought me a cotton half slip there. I hated the polyester slips, they were too hot. In the 70’s you wouldn’t think of going out without a slip if you wore a dress or skirt.

Yes, those were the good old days. I miss them. Aside from not going out without a slip under your dress or skirt, you weren't dressed unless you were wearing stockings. No one went out with bare legs. Today its the total opposite.

@Luis Ishmael It was the good old days for me and most people in my community who did not get involved in the crack and murder epidemic. At that time there was a sense of community and we all cared for and looked out for one another.. not like now where its every man for himself and nobody gives a damn about their neighbor.

There were four movie theaters on Fordham. Btwn Jerome and the Grand Concourse was the Capri and the Lido. the RKO movie theater was where Dr. Jay store is now. The Valentine movie theater the next block over. Where Best Buy is now was Sears Department Store. The building with that "Guggeheim" look was long known as the "hatbox building." Dick Guidron's Cadillac dealership, a longtime successful black owned business, was located a block before Southern Blvd. Many owners of a Cadillac in the city and surrounding areas likely bought it from there. Well, so many stores came and went there on Fordham.

That DMV on Fordham and Crotona, years ago was the busiest Cadillac dealer in the city. Dick Gidron Cadillac, they had a roof top parking full of Caddys, his showroom had the best looking Caddys. All the wiseguys bought their cars from him, you know, the Italian looking Caddys. He had a private booth in a restaurant on 75th and 3rd avenue in manhattan, it was named Friscos. The boys owned it.

That was my old high school, Theodore Roosevelt High. Class of 1990. Back then-one of the most notorious schools in the Bronx. It was so bad, there’s a documentary out there with Tom Selleck narrating how messed up it was. I used to walk this same route to go to school. Looks like the neighborhood has changed a lot since then. Alexander’s and Lowe’s are gone. I see Gyro King is still there, however. I live in suburbia on the other side of the country now, but I do occasionally miss the colorful characters, the energy and bustle of the old neighborhood.

My Aunt and uncle lived on Laconia Ave. in the Bronx, where I would spend many summers. I was born in the Bronx, but my parents moved to New Jersey in 1955, when I was 5 years old. I've been on all those streets, way back in the day. My grandparents, who were born in Sweden, migrated in the late 1800's and settled in the Bronx where they raised all their children.

Cousins Record Shop on Fordham by Webster Ave, staffed by young men wearing shirt and ties and sporting long hair and bushy sideburns, was the goto place for every imaginable LP and 45rpm you could think of. They had it all. Musical instruments as well. I spent many Saturdays there during my grade school years perusing thru their vast record collections.

Fordham Road is always a treat for an annual visitor like me. I really hope the recent spate of looting and vandalism has not spoiled this area for good.

I love your tours I grew up in the Bronx now I live in Chelsea for the last 30 years. We would never say we’re going to the the subway if it was above ground we say we’re going to the EL. Meaning elevated train.

i remember growing up in the area and ending up graduating from fordham university, I remember as a kid walking passed fordham with my dad thinking it was a big park and we were on our way in and a guard stopped us, only to return there as a student years later,I havent been back there since i graduated in 1998 but let me tell you I loved every minute of it even going to school at Monroe College too

This is an excellent video that is well produced and well narrated. you captured some really great landmarks of Fordham Road and the early beginnings of Pelham parkway. it has changed quite a lot. When I was a kid there used to be a Howard Johnson's restaurant across the street from the Bronx zoo at the corner of Fordham Road and southern boulevard. there used to be an RKO Fordham movie theater near the intersection of the Grand concourse and Fordham Road. of course don't forget there used to be a Sears department store right where the Best buy store currently is in that building at the corner of Webster Avenue and Fordham Road. This is great footage and I'm glad you were able to produce this video safely. You were smart to carry a flashlight with you!
